OT: Rich Rod offered by S Carolina…turns them down

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per multiple outlets, Rich Rod was offered the South Carolina job and turned them down. Many thought he would move back out East, but looks like he's content to stay put.

Unless he got a solid raise, not sure why he'd interview only to turn the job down. Doesn't make much sense and might irritate current boss/fanbase.

He's still got another, what, 4 years to go to get that sweet pot of huge booster money under his UA contract. South Carolina isn't the job to give that up for if the Arizona program isn't a tire fire.

It was.  Again, it's dropped significantly over the past couple years.  I read something about it a month or so ago.  I don't recall the specifics, but I do remember thinking that it was no longer enough to make up the difference against the kind of offer he could receive from a bigger program.

Here we go.  I found something from September.

"The benefactor donated 500,000 shares in a publicly traded Master Limited Partnership (identified as Western Refining Logistics LP by the Financial Times), with 175,000 shares each allotted for Miller and Rodriguez, 100,000 for Byrne and 50,000 to be used at the school’s discretion.

Since the MLP shares were worth $35.36 at the time of the deal’s structure in May 2014, that meant Miller and Rodriguez had $6.19 million worth of stock set aside for them and Byrne had $3.54 million. However, the stock price has slipped 34 percent since then.

Each of the three employees were entitled to the entire amount of their shares if they did not voluntarily leave before 2022. They could collect their full shares if fired without cause after four years, or receive a prorated amount if fired without cause before four years."

-------------------------------------------

So it's worth a hair over $4 million or ~$575,000 per year right now, if he stays until 2022.  Even at it's original value, there's a good chance that it wouldn't have been a factor.

If Lou Holtz or Steve Spurrier couldn't turn SC into a consistent title contender, Rich Rod isn't going to.  They just can't get enough great players at SC to consistently contend in the SEC.

For all of Spurrier's success and the occasional Jadeveon Clowney or Marcus Lattimore, even with his three 11-win seasons, SC has never played in a major bowl game.  As for Holtz, he is a joke now but still had some serious "chops" when he went to SC.

SC is a lateral move at best.  I know Arizona has never made a Rose Bowl, but they made the Fiesta twice when it was an official "major" bowl.  Rich Rod won't get pilloried for his 6-6 record this year at Arizona; being offered the SC job indicates that he is held in high esteem everywhere but the Big Ten.

I really can't imagine him leaving AZ unless he is offered a top ten job.

Personally, I think he would be crazy to leave Tuscon. He has a good gig there. Low expectations and he seems to come up with a good upset every year or two that fires up the fan base. It's a basketball school, I feel like they are happy with a bowl game almost every year and the occasional year where they threaten for the Pac 12 title.

Last time Rich turned down a lucrative offer from an SEC school (Alabama) he ended up coaching here two years later.

I don't want Harbaugh to leave.

EDIT: For And i REFUSE to put an "s" on this post or any other post.  Anybody too stupid to see this as a joke deserves to lose the one point it costs you to downvote me.
