OT: Rich Rod offered by S Carolina…turns them down
Per multiple outlets, Rich Rod was offered the South Carolina job and turned them down. Many thought he would move back out East, but looks like he's content to stay put.
Unless he got a solid raise, not sure why he'd interview only to turn the job down. Doesn't make much sense and might irritate current boss/fanbase.

He's still got another, what, 4 years to go to get that sweet pot of huge booster money under his UA contract. South Carolina isn't the job to give that up for if the Arizona program isn't a tire fire.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:15 PM ^
The value of that sweet pot has dropped significantly, though.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:17 PM ^
Isn't it around $6-8 million? He started with a little over 6, he only had a portion of the $18 million put up for him, the basketball coach, and the AD.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:32 PM ^
It was. Again, it's dropped significantly over the past couple years. I read something about it a month or so ago. I don't recall the specifics, but I do remember thinking that it was no longer enough to make up the difference against the kind of offer he could receive from a bigger program.
Here we go. I found something from September.
"The benefactor donated 500,000 shares in a publicly traded Master Limited Partnership (identified as Western Refining Logistics LP by the Financial Times), with 175,000 shares each allotted for Miller and Rodriguez, 100,000 for Byrne and 50,000 to be used at the school’s discretion.
Since the MLP shares were worth $35.36 at the time of the deal’s structure in May 2014, that meant Miller and Rodriguez had $6.19 million worth of stock set aside for them and Byrne had $3.54 million. However, the stock price has slipped 34 percent since then.
Each of the three employees were entitled to the entire amount of their shares if they did not voluntarily leave before 2022. They could collect their full shares if fired without cause after four years, or receive a prorated amount if fired without cause before four years."
-------------------------------------------
So it's worth a hair over $4 million or ~$575,000 per year right now, if he stays until 2022. Even at it's original value, there's a good chance that it wouldn't have been a factor.

it's only 3-4 more years iirc. He's been at Zona for 4 years now.

If Lou Holtz or Steve Spurrier couldn't turn SC into a consistent title contender, Rich Rod isn't going to. They just can't get enough great players at SC to consistently contend in the SEC.
For all of Spurrier's success and the occasional Jadeveon Clowney or Marcus Lattimore, even with his three 11-win seasons, SC has never played in a major bowl game. As for Holtz, he is a joke now but still had some serious "chops" when he went to SC.
SC is a lateral move at best. I know Arizona has never made a Rose Bowl, but they made the Fiesta twice when it was an official "major" bowl. Rich Rod won't get pilloried for his 6-6 record this year at Arizona; being offered the SC job indicates that he is held in high esteem everywhere but the Big Ten.
I really can't imagine him leaving AZ unless he is offered a top ten job.

RichRod is enjoying some success at Arizona. I think it's smart for him to stay put.

If your a progam serious about competing with the big boys you look else where. If your goal is to be conference also-ran than RichRod is your guy.
December 6th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
Michigan is an also-ran now, thanks to him!

Maybe they just asked him to bring a defense, period.
December 6th, 2015 at 2:42 AM ^
I could see him being gun-shy about entering into another tumultuos Athletic Department situation, given what happened to him at Michigan. With all the behind the scenes BS and backstabbing that went on. If he's happy at Arizona, then why risk it?
December 5th, 2015 at 11:10 PM ^
Personally, I think he would be crazy to leave Tuscon. He has a good gig there. Low expectations and he seems to come up with a good upset every year or two that fires up the fan base. It's a basketball school, I feel like they are happy with a bowl game almost every year and the occasional year where they threaten for the Pac 12 title.

Your family isn't being truthful with you. While technically it might be 80 degrees 350 days a year, half the year it's 80 degrees at 8:00 am and on the way to 95+.
The average high temperature in Tucscan is above 90 for five months of the year. In June and July it's but August is much cooler at 97.

I'll gladly take that without the humidity.

Sometimes people interview just to remind themselves how good they have it where they are. I'm sure RR was curious to see what SC had to offer, but probably decided on stability in this case. I mean, who leaves a school that allows a coach to do a Bond style parody video?
December 6th, 2015 at 10:10 AM ^
I don't get why people continue to think these ultra-competitive coaches are happy making bowl games in a bottom Pac-12 program. If RR just wanted to be comfortable, he wouldn't have taken the Michigan job.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:11 PM ^
He's holding out for that sweet spot at East Carolina.

If they run him off a year or two down the road.

Great news! @CoachRodAZ did not commit to the offer from S. Carolina. He's an Arizona Wildcat. #BearDown

The A.D. tried to insert "Will not run shitty 3-3-5 stack defense" into the contract, and Rich Rod took umbrage.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:26 PM ^
Last time Rich turned down a lucrative offer from an SEC school (Alabama) he ended up coaching here two years later.
I don't want Harbaugh to leave.
EDIT: For And i REFUSE to put an "s" on this post or any other post. Anybody too stupid to see this as a joke deserves to lose the one point it costs you to downvote me.

He did the same thing with 'Bama in 2006. Met with their AD and was extended a lucrative offer, only to turn it down and sign an extension with WVU.

What "multiple outlets?"
December 5th, 2015 at 11:22 PM ^
Well, among others, the AD of Arizona.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:38 PM ^
No, that's exactly it. There are no others. Every bit of this is based on one tweet from Greg Byrne.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:46 PM ^
And Sports Illustrated and Bruce Feldman and others.
December 5th, 2015 at 11:53 PM ^
Again, SI thing is based on Greg Byrne's tweet.
Bruce Feldman now says he has a "source." I call BS on all of it. There's no way he was offered SC and turned it down.
