OT: Reggie Bush Says He Might Try to Recruit Urban Meyer to Coach USC

Of course. The only player ever forced to give back the Heisman is trying to recruit the most corrupt coach of all time. Perfect. LINK.

Quite apropos if you ask me because the only way USC can win is if they cheat.

Watch for for one of usc’s gynecologist to give urban a clean bill of health and then witness urban give a presser on why he is I retiring from coaching, for a second time

Which is completely ludicrous when you think about it. USC can field a national championship caliber team without ever having to recruit outside its own state.

Might not even have to go outside a 100-mile radius of campus. They have so many built-in advantages that should allow good coaches to have them in the playoff discussion every single year.

Urban to USC was the first thought I had when Urban "retired" from O$U. I will grant that he is a helluva football coach but he is also a self obsessed, deceitful cretin. He's bailed in Gainesville and Columbus when the locals had the nerve to gently question him ("I have brought football greatness from on high and yet I must suffer being questioned by ungrateful dullards?"). Heart issues? Brain cyst? Bullshit. He will sulk for a season and then turned up at the next high profile gig.

Perhaps, but they also have disadvantages that people often overlook. USC (and UCLA) are tough places to attract top-shelf coaches, because they don't make more money there than they make at any other top program but the high cost of living in LA drastically limits their buying power. Also, college football isn't nearly as popular in California as it is in the South or the Midwest, so the gameday atmosphere at USC and UCLA is a notch below what you would find at Alabama, Michigan, Florida State, etc. As glamorous as Southern California might seem, there are plenty of blue chip recruits in California who want to go somewhere where football is king and not just one of numerous attractions that compete for mindshare and attention.

This is a pretty silly comment.  When you're a coach making 8 million a year, you aren't worried about your cost of living being a little higher.  It's not like Harbaugh is living in a $200k condo in Ann Arbor.  And the 49ers, NY Giants/Jets, LA Rams/Chargers, Redskins all seem to be able to find coaches despite the cost of living.

I'll give you that the gameday experience at USC and UCLA isn't exactly like the heavy hitters in the Big Ten or SEC, that's heavily outweighed by the fact that a) the weather is amazing, b) both schools have better academics than 90% of D1 schools and c) the local talent is top notch and many kids/families like to stay close to home, all things being close to equal.

Both schools have also done a poor job of hiring coaches over the last couple of decades--with some notable exceptions like Pete Carroll. Are guys like Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Clay Helton, Karl Dorrell, Rick Neuheisel or Jim Mora anywhere near elite college coaches?

Bush recruiting Meyer is a joke and gives far to  relativity to Bush.  Meyer will coach again, it may very well be at USC, but the only thing for certain is a nobody like Bush “recruiting” him will have absolutely zero to do with the outcome.  Vanity, ego and greed are what is going to “recruit” Meyer.

Doesn't say anything, other than USC hires terrible coaches (Clay Helton, lol).

The issue is that USC is trying focusing their resources on becoming a better regarded academic school. Similarly to NYU, USC is a good school, but not elite and they have a ton of cash coming in from foreign students (as well as celebs that pay to get their kid in).

Their dean apparently doesn't care about sports. I mean their AD is Lynn Swan (great player, OK broadcaster, knows nothing about being an AD).

Assuming he hasn't "lost a step", Meyer at USC might create an unbelievable force.  USC might have lower ethical standards, a better recruiting base and might be more attractive (setting aside USC's immediate neighborhood) than was Ohio State.  With those "advantages", it is hard to believe USC has struggled recently.

Agreed. Clemson and Bama are currently in their own tier.

I'd say OSU is the distant third, as you said, but you can easily make an argument for OU. They've made the last two playoffs, while OSU didn't, and they beat us by 15 on our own turf last time we played them.

I won't put OSU in the same tier as Bama and Clemson until we make the playoff again and, at minimum, are extremely competitive in a 1st-round loss.

This has been speculated ever since Urban suddenly became available at the end of this last season.  And to be frank, the current staff is having trouble recruiting anyway as the overall vibe about Helton's staff is "Dead Man Walking".  If it wasn't for the ketchup and mustard fanboying aspect, recruiting would be even worse.

No, no, Urban’s sick, man.  He has headaches.  He’s all stressed out and wants to spend time with his family.  Unless, of course, they can match Dabo’s deal.

I think Meyer is going to end up there regardless.

Poetic justice would be for him to get USC into the playoffs and run up against Harbaugh, with Michigan handing them a beat down and another "medical retirement."
