OT: Patricia’s status with the Lions

Submitted by NYC Fan3 on September 22nd, 2020 at 9:59 AM

I know it’s currently employed, but how much longer until he is let go?  The Lions have now lost 11 games in a row and have to play Arizona in week 3 and New Orleans in week 4.  13 losses in a row is likely.

Patricia is 9-24-1 in his first 34 games.  Caldwell was 19-15 in his.  I’d feel better if it looked like the Lions were building something with young players, but the talent isn’t there.

Fire his ass, we were better off with Caldwell.

We wasted Barry, we wasted Calvin, and we're currently in the middle of wasting the best QB we've ever had that tons of other teams would kill to have.

well since were hoping the lions have a chance at Trevor Lawrence so were hoping hes employed through the end of the year. we dont want to somehow win some meaningless games. We now know Patricia is clueless. Im hoping his rush 2 defensive genius work can help us get to the number 1 pick

odds that patricia gets fired before the 2021 season:  100%

odds that the goddamned ford family picks a competent coach to replace him, or to replace patricia's replacement, after that boob bombs out by 2024:  0%

I don't think they'll do anything now. Mid-season coaching changes in the NFL are pretty rare. If he was fired they would likely have to promote from within anyway, so nothing really changes until the next offseason.

Assuming Patricia gets fired, and I think he does, the Lions will be hiring their 4th new coach in less than 10 years. It still boggles my mind that they got rid of Caldwell who had a winning record with the organization.

I won't say why I think Patricia is still around because I don't my post to be labeled, but if Matt Patricia had the same record as Caldwell we'd be discussing a contract extension.  Similarly, if Caldwell had the same record after two seasons as Patricia, he would have been fired.

I for one was excited about Patricia when he was hired, because eventually one of Belichick's assistants has to pan out (probably his son will).  But he has been an unmitigated disaster.  I hope we end up losing 15 or 16 games, trade Stafford to a contender (he deserves a shot to win at least one playoff game), and get Lawrence or Fields.  If we draft Fields, I would love for Day to be his coach, mainly because the Lions will suck no matter what, but it would provide an opportunity to disrupt OSU (though they'll probably end up with an even better coach).

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator wants to be a head coach and he has been passed by a couple off-seasons in a row. The Lions should think about getting him and think about it early so they get to him first if there's more interest him this next off-season.

Eh, I have major concerns about Bieniemy.  I'm not a huge fan of hiring offensive coordinators that don't even call plays for their offense.  I really like Robert Saleh whom is the 49ers defensive coordinator.  Really good coach and is super intense.  Not that it means anything but he also grew up in Michigan.

I posted this in the MNF thread but I told all my Lions fans buddies that when they get rid of Quinntricia they need to rehire Assistant GM to the 49ers Martin Mahew back in a dump truck full of money to Salehs house to get him to come home. Trade Stafford to the Cowboys for draft picks. I think the Lions will get draft pick 3-7 so they either A. Group the Cowboys and Lions picks together to go get Lawrence or B. Stay 3-7 and get Fields, Trey Lance, or Jamie Newman. They then use the picks to select only offensive line, defensive line, or linebackers that run like runningbacks. The island of misfit Patriots all need to be shown the exit then they change the locks

Never should’ve fired Caldwell. Not impressed with the GM either. Patricia should already be fired, but he’ll lose a few more games first. He’ll probably get the ax late in the season.

JIm Caldwell was Jason Garrett. Detroit was never going to be anything but perfectly mediocre under him.

Problem wasn't the firing...it was the guy they got to replace him.

I guess looking back now it's easy to say Caldwell should have stuck around, but if the goal is actually winning games and getting to the playoffs Caldwell wasn't really cutting it either.

If you watch Ford vs Ferrari, you will see what the problem with the Lions is.    It starts and ends with ownership.   You have to build a culture of winning and expectation.    Here is an interesting fact: the entire front office of the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2000 was the Lions front office in the late 80s/early 90s.    They have had tremendous success the minute they left the Lions.   Just watch the red folder scene from the movie and that will tell you everything you need to know....the Ford’s are all about the photo finish.   Until someone else owns the Lions...nothing will change.

Yep...specifically the main person is Kevin Colbert, who is the current Steelers GM. He was the Lions pro scouting director during the 1990s. He left Detroit for Pittsburgh in 2000 to become the Steelers director of football operations. He hasn't left Pittsburgh since. Meanwhile, William Clay Ford goes out and hires Matt Millen at the end of the 2000 season. Rest is history.

Patricia is a lame duck as is the GM I believe.  We need to trade Stafford and get some value for him.  Poor guy is on a shit squad again.  Tank for Trevor and rebuild like countless other teams have done.

Firing Caldwell was a terrible decision at the time and replacing him with fat, fake Bellichick was even dumber.  But fake Patrioting is going to fake Patriot, I really wish the Lions had learned from the other teams that tried to copy the Patriots and fell flat on their faces and, y'know, not tried it.

One need only go as far as Southfield & Rotunda to get the answer, assuming they'll answer a good old fashioned knock at the door these days. Then again, last year when I stopped by at lunch to ask if we could just send the man packing, I was turned away, so they might not take the question very seriously unfortunately.

was unaware the lions were on an 11 game losing streak, and that with the last 4 blowing double-digit leads.   buh-bye.

Oh, oh Sheila!

Patricia is done. I'm guessing later though. You want to do it somewhat early to get a head start on other teams doing similar searches, but without fans in the stands causing a regular scene, I think they can wait until Black Friday.

The question becomes, is Quinn given one more chance? Most GMs get to make two coaching hires before being canned. Ordinarily I'd love to get Saleh out of SF, but Bob will feel pressure to make an experienced hire. Unfortunately, I don't see Dungy or Cowher giving up cushy TV gigs for the Lions. Maybe they settle for a retread like Jeff Fisher. That would at least get them back to their 8-8 salad days.

What I'm most curious about, however, is which popular player gets shipped out before the trade deadline this year? With all the injuries throughout the league, the Lions could get good value for Stafford, Golladay, and maybe a couple others.

Fortune favors the bold, Bob!

I am pretty sick of Quinn working off his own backwards big board come draft day. We seem to take guys rounds before the rest of the NFL is even considering them. I don't know if our scouting is just that bad or Quinn just thinks he is some avant garde genius who knows something no one else does.

We have been picking fairly high in the draft for years and seem to have next to no talent. No depth. Our young players don't look good. Fun times.

Ownership is a joke and has been since WCF completed the acquisition.  HFII was halfway competent running Ford until he decided he knew everything and could get rid of all the smart guys.  After HF II, none of the Ford family has been good at anything except running Ford and the Lions into the ground.   Both Ford and the Lions have much less value than their competitors and will only have a chance to succeed when the Ford family finally loses control of them.

Smitty1983 has the right idea. The Lions are going to be terrible anyway. Make an insane offer to Ryan Day. Give him final say on player personnel moves. Whatever it takes, just get him out of Columbus.

As somebody else said, they will string together 8 wins and draft at 10 or 12 picking another reach/luxury position player. Its in the franchises best interest to get rid of both Quin and Patricia now. They have zero quality depth, their play calling is embarrassing, and their "defensive genius" of a coach does not know how to manage a game.

Stop hiring from the Patriots coaching tree! It has not worked out in the NFL yet.

Browns dodged the Patricia bullet.  I really wanted the guy after we fired Hue Jackson and now I'm glad we didnt get him.  A LOT.

FWIW no idea how the Stefanski hire will work out in the long run but short term results are pretty good.  Getting blasted by the Ravens is pretty expected and the team showed nice improvement from week one to week two.  If we beat Washington this week (and we should) they'll be 2-1 heading to Dallas and they look very beatable.  So far, so good.

And if you want to know the influence Stafanski had with the Vikings look at their offense this year compared to last.  Looks like a completely different team.

At the time, I thought it was fine to let Caldwell go. I thought he couldn't take us any further. Once we hired Patricia, I wanted them to bring Caldwell back.

It's about to get really ugly.

I never quite got the need to replace Caldwell with someone like Patricia.  Caldwell wasn't great but he was a competent, professional coach whose teams played like competent teams.  Yes, they weren't championship caliber but I've always believed that a competent team can make the leap to better-than-competent quicker than a bad one just getting lucky with a draft or two.  And maybe it's just because I know people in NE who watched the Patriots but all of them were down on Patricia and thought he topped out as a good coordinator behind a strong HC.

bacon1431

I didn't have major problems with Caldwell. But I also don't think we do anything other than contend for the playoffs every other year under him. Which is better than dumpster fire, but you still want to get to that next level. Hiring Patricia just shows that Quinn is another Patriot stooge with no actual ingenuity and original thoughts or ideas. Just tries to copy what Patriots did without knowing exactly how they became great. Which to be fair, I don't know either. How much was getting perhaps the GOAT Qb and HC at the same time? How much was culture building? Chicken, egg?

In most organizations, he would be gone at the Bye week if the team is 0-4.  However, this is the Detroit Lions we are talking about.  One of the most inept organizations in all of sports.

Could Sheila clear Quinntricia together at the bye week?  That would be a bold move and would tell me it is not SOL.  However, I am not counting on it.  Either way, I think they are both goners in 3 months so I will be patient.  I am ready for the Stafford bus to leave town as well.

I'm always slow to advocate firing coaches and losing four games in a row that they should have won doesn't, I think, say what you think it says. It could be more about shit luck than bad coaching, else you wouldn't have had a two-digit lead in the first place. But Patricia isn't worth saving. I still think they should have kept Caldwell. My real rooting interest is they should hire Ryan Day.
