OT: NHL ref in Wings game last night caught on hot mic looking to call a penalty against the Preds

OT but not OT for the amount of fussing about refs and BPONE in board.

In last night's Wings v. Nashville game, the ref was caught with a hot mic saying:

"it wasn't much but I wanted to get a f'n penalty against Nashville early in the game"

The ref called a trip on Nashville.  In reality Jon Merrill just lost his edge and fell down.  Replay of the call is in the article:

Weird this went *for* a team from Michigan.

Have fun with this one.

Refs ALWAYS suck....  j/k

Not saying it was the case in this instance, but when a team (or a specific player) has a reputation for something, a ref may want to call them for it early in the game to let them know that its going to get noticed and such bullshit won't be tolerated......

That's also a problem. You can't just whistle a guy on a fake trip for tripping to send him a message! If the Wings were any good that could have flipped the entire game.

There's a difference between mentally making a point to keep a guy in check and it's a whole other thing if he doesn't do shit and you whistle him for it. He also said he wanted to give "Nashville" a penalty -- not any particular dude.

not sure how that's also a problem..... if a player (or a team) has a reputation for bullshit and the ref is looking to call them for said bullshit early in the game, to keep it from getting out of hand....

that's not a problem, its actually a ref doing his job.....

I didn't say that is what happened, i don't know, wasn't watching the game.  Also, having played and coached hockey for years, its not uncommon for a player to called for a trip, when it just happened that his stick was near the skates of another player who loses an edge and goes down.  its a fast moving game, they don't see it all and sometimes call what they think happened, not what actually happened.  No different than when a basketball player throws his head back like he's in drama class, when the defender made contact with his hip as he drove by, drawing a whistle because of the reaction, not what actually happened

No. It’s not ok. Looking for any excuse to call a penalty is ridiculous. There is a big difference between “do one tiny thing and I’m gonna blow the whistle” and “I’m going to watch this type of infraction closer to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand and will call it a little tight early on to make sure they understand I’m looking for it.”

The first one means you’re looking for an excuse and might misinterpret a non-penalty as a penalty (which is what happened and is bad).

The second is technically a penalty, and though it doesn’t usually get call that tightly and to-the-letter-of-the-law, he’s choosing to here to make sure that type of infraction doesn’t get out of hand. This is fine.

Totally understand your point here; I reffed soccer for a lot of years and one thing I was taught in training was that “you are paid to call the game the way you see it” meaning exactly this. You won’t see everything and catch every infraction, but you are being compensated to call the game as you see it. That said, it is MY duty as a referee to put myself in a position to see and hear as much of the game as possible, to elevate my product as a referee and keep the game about the game, making it as fair as possible.

I’ve missed plenty of calls too, by the way, some I can still vividly remember to this day

Only got fired since he got caught on a hot mic. This sort of thing happens all the time in the NHL and in other sports.

Make-up calls are just instinctual.

Hell, in the Michigan-LSU game there was one. Dickinson got called for back-to-back offensive fouls when trying to post up. Then Cam Thomas had a drive that Mike Smith should have been called for a blocking foul, but they ruled it a charge.

You can't convince me that ref would have called that a charge if there weren't the Dickinson fouls just moments earlier.

Hockey is the only sport where penalties are more predictable than scoring.  It is easier to predict which team will be awarded the next power play than which team will score the next goal.

If you think about it, that's a problem.

I mean... the Wings got outplayed and shutout so I can't really take a bad penalty call as even a moral victory.

Related - but everyone should listen to the "Whistleblower" podcast if you haven't already.  It details the Tim Donaghy saga from the NBA betting scheme those many years ago.  If you don't think refs are in on the action, then you're living under a rock...

Michael Franzese came every year to talk to the athletes as part of his punishment. I always enjoyed listening and wished he would say so much more about what he really knew. I did once hear him dispute the word, “Mafia”. He claimed we all have it wrong and there is no such thing in America. He did agree to, “la cosa nostra” as being more accurate.

I mean, there are very few games I've watched in my lifetime where I haven't developed a bias of who I wanted to win the game, even if I have no background.

I know it's their job, but its easier said than done.

Source, reffed IM soccer for 2 weeks freshman year and hated/was terrible at it.

The outro of the ESPN article on this story had me nearly spitting coffee all over my keyboard earlier today.

Peel has been one of the NHL's most maligned officials, with fans using social media to critique his calls through the years. In 2015, Peel was removed from officiating a New Jersey Devils home game after being photographed at a bar drinking with a reporter. [Editor's note: The reporter was ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, the writer of this piece.]

The fact that he was so openly talking about it means that this s*** goes on ALL THE TIME.

This guy is getting hammered for it, but I suspect this is common practice.

If you don't have good enough judgment to keep your mouth shut 45 days from retirement, you probably don't have good enough judgment to referee at a professional level.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
