OT: Name a good band where all the members are under 40
By “good,” I mean you would pay to see them live.
How many are left? I like Florence + the Machine, but I have no idea how old the members aside from Florence Welch (33) are.
I remember when Jeff Ament (57) of Pearl Jam turned 40 and my first thought was “Geez, maybe they have to break up now!” But now I’m hard-pressed to find younger bands that are worth the price of admission!
Any “newer” bands I should be a fan of, or is rock really on death’s door?
I'll check out Snail Mail. Thanks for the rec.
Also, if you get the opportunity in the future, try and see The Beths (any of those bands/artists). They put on a fun show and the lead guitar player has some chops.
Second timtebro's recommendation of Kaleo. I'd add Royal Blood if you want something harder, and The Family Crest if you want something artsier. Southern Avenue or Lake Street Dive if you want something bluesier.
Re: LSBlue: I LOVE St. Paul and the Broken Bones, but I saw that they have at least one person over 40. But what they hell, they're still new-ish enough to include, and Paul Janeway is still under 40.
I like Halestorm for Rock, but their latest album was disappointing.
Turnpike Troubadors/Whiskey Myers/Cody Jinks(but he's 39), Tyler Childers for Red Dirt Country/Southern Rock
Walk the Moon
I'm starting to feel really old, even Draft Punk band members are over 40. I liked when Williams and Rodgers joined them in get lucky.
Chout. Young band out of the Chicago area. Singer was in the AIC tribute band, Facelift, and is damn near a Layne clone. His original stuff with Chout is pretty good.
Protomartyr
Sure, the singer Joe Casey is over 40, but the rest are under, and they deserve all the attention they can get. Great, great band.
Parquet Courts has been mentioned a couple times and is another good one.
Rolling Stones still under 40?
There's a great new band called Hanson and all the members are under 40!
damn, I did not expect 10/11 members of arcade fire to be over 40 years old...
But I'd pay money to see:
- Twenty One Pilots (maybe not considered a band?)
- Highly Suspect
- the Lumineers if my Fiancée wanted to go.
- Alabama Shakes if the venue was right.
- Manchester Orchestra
Pricing would have to be affordable though. I'm not a big concert guy to begin with, and outrageous pricing keeps me away from a lot of concerts I'd go to for half the price. Give me Incubus, Any band including Dallas Green or ben Gibbard before I go to any of the concerts above.
I had Panic! at the Disco listed before realizing they dropped all band members and tour under that name as a solo act now...I did pay to see the band version of Panic! back when they played at the EMU convocation center with Dashboard Confessional.
Manchester Orchestra is my favorite band. Saw them and The Front Bottoms in 2018. Great show.
They opened up for Brand New in 2009 at the Fillmore, and I ended up liking their set better than Brand New (basically because that Daisy album wasn't their best).
Funny thing about this is that back when I was in the 'band, we did in fact have a tenor sax who was 40.
The Dear Hunter is an amazing group...did a 40 song album broken up into colors at one point. Check out Dear Ms. Leading, In Cauda Venenum for the rockier stuff, and Things That Hide Away, and Father for a completely different sound. Lots of orchestral influence in later works, too.
Ghost, Highly suspect, Badflower, Parkway Drive
Ghost is outstandingly fantastic live ...
The Midnight - 80s retrowave band
And one of the members is a Michigan fan iirc.
The 1975
Is Gunship under 40? I know one of the guys is 39.
t.A.T.u.
There's a few younger bands that sound pretty cool, if you like guitar rock.
Heron Oblivion
Windhand
Blood Ceremony
I guess Greta Van Fleet not too bad. I remember when Def Leppard came out as the next great Zep band. Early on they even admitted it but they went on and had some good songs.
The fact that no one has mentioned Paramore makes me sad. I don’t know if people understand just how young they were during the mid-00s... Hayley Williams is only 31.
The Band Camino is another recent rock-pop band that I’ve been enjoying over the last year or two as well.
I was going to say Paramore, but I think Haley Williams is shifting to a solo career.
On that note, I recently heard a rumor from someone much younger and more well-versed in current music that Paramore is working on a new album, but with a sound much more akin to "Riot!" (which I believe to be their best album). If that is true, they should immediately be put near the top of this list.
I’d be into that... it’s hard to see them dipping their toes back in that style after the fairly successful experiments to a more pop-based sound with After Laughter and the self-titled, but Hayley has always seemed like a rocker at heart, so I could see that happening.
Now that I think about it, her recent solo project has probably helped distinguish her pop career and a Paramore album. She gets both the challenge of making pop music with her solo stuff and the fun/nostalgia of her rock stuff and friends in the band and their fans.
The Go Rounds are a fun Jam band.
Different genre than the prevailing crowd here, but Florida Georgia Line puts on a great show
I fully expected this to be a tired-old-man snarkfest, and I'm very pleasantly surprised.
On the metal side of things, most or possibly all of the bands on Sumerian Records are under 40...Periphery, Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, etc. Even Between the Buried and Me has another year before Giles turns 40.
Young the Giant. The lead singer was born in Ann Arbor too.
Yonaka
Nothing But Thieves
Cleopatrick
Saint Motel
The Blue Stones
Saw Saint Motel earlier this year, before quarantine. Really good band. Looking forward to the 2nd half of their album that's coming out soon.
I imagine their live show is crazy, I hear he's quite the showman.
I remember hearing "MyType" a few year's ago and not only is it a groove but
"your're just my type.... you have a pulse and you are breathing"
had no choice but to like that on spotify.
Van Horn is killing it these days.
Apparently, no one listens to the same music I do. My list off the top of my head (I’m sure I’m missing quite a few I have either seen or I listen to)
Ghost, Falling in Reverse, Memphis May Fire, Attila, Motionless in White, Beartooth, I Prevail (from Southfield), Fever 333, Fit for a King, Stick to Your Guns, Blessthefall ....
In my other favorite genre, Wiz Khalifa, Da Baby, Moneybagg Yo, Roddy Rich, Jack Harlow, Kevin Gates, Lil Wayne, MGK (old stuff was good, new stuff is meh, but he’s proving to be a very talented individual in numerous music genres as well as acting)
I've long held the belief the EVERY good band is under 40. In fact, most bands make their best albums in their mid-late 20's. Springsteen did "Born To Run" at 25. Tom Petty did "Damn The Torpedoes" at 29. Eddie Vedder was 26 when "10" was released. Kurt Cobain was 24 when "Nevermind" came out. Bono was 22 when "War" was issued (and 27 for "The Joshua Tree"). You get the idea.
I know that doesn't exactly answer your question because those most of those bands are still going strong (if alive)......but their best work came in their earliest days.
I'm sure that there a lot of viable bands in their 20's......we might just know about them yet.
Personally, I've been on an Alt-Country binge for the past few years (Old 97's, Whiskeytown, Wilco, Lucero, American Aquarium, Avett Brothers......things like that). A lot of those guys are in their 40's and 50's now.
Jade Jackson. Gets classified as country-ish, but has a lot of rock influence..mentored by Mike Ness of Social Distortion. Reminiscent of Lucinda Williams, if that floats your boat. A very nascent career.
Thanks......checking her out on Spotify now. BTW....I have some Mike Ness (and/or Social D) in my mix as well.
I became familiar with her as an opening act on a Social D tour..I think in 2017. They usually have some talented opening acts.
Mine qualify more for the “under 40” rather than “newer”:
Twenty One Pilots (I don’t care what anyone says, their live shows are an absolute blast)
Milky Chance
Leon Bridges (not really a band, but he’s fantastic)
MGMT (haven’t put out much music in recent years but saw them live a year or two ago and it was great)
Tame Impala
I’ve seen the Greta Van Fleet comments, and it is a replica Zep, but also a solid live show
Empire of the Sun just misses the cut at 41 and 42 years old
You beat me on the MGMT. Your username is also my wifi network name (after I was politely told my neighbors to change the previous one which contained profanity).
Love it.
Twenty One Pilots. Fantastic live show, music will move you if you actually listen.
5 Seconds of Summer.
Not sure if they're rock in the Dewey Finn sense, but they're legit, very good, and have a decent range.
MGMT
The Wayouts.
As a 40 year old, I disapprove of this thread.
They technically don't count because a few members are just over 40, but Arcade Fire absolutely killed the two times I saw them live (both in the past 5 years, so past what I would have thought was their "peak" era).
A few other bands (actually under 40):
- Tame Impala
- Beach House
- Bon Iver
Solo acts:
- Tyler, the Creator
- Solange
- Janelle Monáe
- Childish Gambino
- Mac DeMarco
- Kendrick Lamar
tOSU marching band
Circa Survive - kinda emo but great riffs
From Indian Lakes - Chill and underrated. Every album is different which is nice to see evolution within a band.
Rufus du Sol.
They all might be under 30, I'm not sure of their ages.
