OT: Lions pickup Cornerback Cameron Sutton from Pitt, what does that do for their draft

Submitted by Champeen on March 14th, 2023 at 3:07 PM

NFL.com has CB Cameron Sutton ranked the 15th best free agent regardless of position, and the number 3 CB Free Agent.

IMO, they should still pickup a CB with one of their first picks as i am not a huge fan of Okudah.

But this definitely makes it feasible to take best available regardless of position now with their first pick, and possible not even take one until their 2nd rounder as this is a deep CB draft.

It was their biggest need. What is everyone thoughts on paying him a bit over 10 million a year over 3 years, and how good this guy is?

The problem is investing in the human being who made that poor decision and feeling absolutely certain that they will not make any future decisions with significantly more money at their disposal (see Henry Ruggs).

Carter is incredibly talented, but if he comes across as immature in team interviews or gives off a vibe that doesn't seem 100% invested in football, then that's a gigantic risk in my opinion.

You really think he thought his speeding down the road(albeit dumb) would result in the death of a teammate?

Doesn't matter what his thought was.  I am sure he knew it was risky yet did it anyways.  Putting the lives of the other drivers, himself, and the general populace at risk.

He then ran away like a little .... and is now trying to deny he ever did anything wrong.

Sorry, I know the NFL is full of bad people but I personally don't want one here.

He did run away, but then he also came back to the scene. Maybe he just freaked out seeing his friends dead? The cops on the scene didn't administer him a breathalyzer so we don't know if he was drinking and driving. Males under 25 are the #1 for car accidents for exactly this reason, believing they are invincible. Hopefully he learns and grows from this extremely painful lesson.

He ran away from the scene because he didn't want to fail a breathalyzer at the scene of a fatal crash he was part of.  There's a reason "Males under 25 are the #1 for car accidents...", and it isn't because they think they're invincible.  They think they're never too drunk to drive (I'm sure the invincible part doesn't help, though).

Yes, this is 100% my opinion and I'll stand by it.  I don't know if it makes him a bigger risk as a draft choice; I don't know if I care whether the Lions choose to draft him or to leave him for someone else; I don't know if the NFL cares (although I kinda doubt it).

Lets just not pretend he had altruistic reasons to flee the scene of a fatal crash, or that he's some hero for coming back.

Unless there is some clarity or resolution in Carter's situation between now and the draft, I greatly doubt that the Lions would draft him.

Seattle at #5 has a need on the defensive line and they drafted a player like Frank Clark coming out of UM...

If they pass on Carter, I don't see a world where the Lions would draft him.

Most people here are too young to remember, but DL Reggie Rogers was picked 7th overall by the Lions in the ‘87 draft out of Washington. He had a rough upbringing and there were signs during his college years that he didn’t make good decisions, but the Lions drafted him anyhow. He barely played his rookie season in ‘87 because of emotional problems, and five games into the ‘88 season he killed three teenagers while driving drunk. He never played another down for the Lions and is regarded as one of the bigger first-round busts in NFL history. I would bet the people at the top in the Lions front office are very aware of that draft day disaster.

To make the Reggie Rogers story worse, he was the younger brother of former UCLA All-American DB Don Rogers, who blew up a promising career with the Browns by ODing on cocaine.

I remember it well and agree this is why they will not make that mistake again. Given the coach is a culture advocate I think that is in every player acquisition decision as paramount. Wilson or a corner likely. DT later in the first or top of second alternating with another corner. Then TE and guard for the next two picks (later 2nd and 3rd rounds) and Moody in the 5th.

Re-sign Williams if possible. Otherwise I am not sure a better FA fit is out there so you have to use a defensive pick on a RB which may work out versus Williams the known quantity.

Lots of moving parts but Holmes so far has had a fair amount of hits.

I don't even like "sins of the father" being passed on to kids, let alone "sins of somebody who has no relation to the kid in question."

There are some red flags, and if the interviews don't go well, then I can understand them passing. But he's the best player in the draft at the biggest position of need (especially after today's signings) so it might be worth forgiving him for racing.

Steeler fan here - hated to see him go. He was our best CB in '22. Excellent coverage guy....but he got exposed by some of the better WRs (not an A+ athlete). He is not a shutdown corner. But given his high football IQ and capability to play in the slot, he provides excellent flexibility. I will be rooting for him in the Honolulu blue.

Sutton’s game isn’t about elite athleticism, but rather being a high IQ guy who plays with grit…sounds like a player who will fit in well.  Plus I like the idea of a smart veteran leading the way, especially if they add a couple guys in the secondary in the draft.  Good, but not flashy signing.

SB article noted that Sutton had the 3rd lowest completion % against for all CB.  Only Sauce and Bradberry were lower.

To me, that is a very good start in evaluating CB.

As for the draft, I will stay consistent with my predictions:

1) The Lions will trade down on at least 1 of their 2 - 1st round picks to get another pick or 2...

2) Another CB will be one of the 2 First rounder (I don't believe they will drop out of the 1st round, only slid down a bit)

3) The other 1st rounder pick will be a DL (either a DT of DE - Klancey from Pitt or Smith from UGA)

4) 4 of the top 6 picks (expecting to pick up 1 with the said trade(s) noted above) the Lions will focused on defense (1-CB, 1 or 2 DL, 1 LB, if only 1 DL, then 1-Safety).  The other 2 picks.... 1 guard and 1 WR...

Dream scenario for above -

Pick 6 trade down with ATL and pick up 8, 75, 110, 113 with #8 - CB - Witherspoon

Pick 18 DL - Either Kancey or Nolan Smith

Pick 48 LB - either Jack Campbell or Drew Sanders or Trenton Simpson

Pick 55 G - Steve Avila

Pick 75 (from ATL) - S - Sydney Brown or Jamie Robinson or Jordon Battle

Pick 81 - WR - Jaylin Hyatt or Parker Washington or Tyler Scott

Luke Schoonmaker is projected as a 4th rounder

Finally, this is based upon the assumption that the Lions will re-sign Jamal Williams...

Could be way off, but it is what got proposed in the PFF Mock draft Simulator and they use the drafting scale....  It gave me a 73% chance for the deal.  I'd be glad to drop 1 or both of the later picks, as long as I got the 75th.  With that being said, IF the scenario plays out with Young, Stroud, and Anderson going to the top 4 picks and Anderson and Carter taken at 3 and 5.  That leaves the Lions holding the golden ticket to the last "top rated" QB and a handful of teams looking for that guy.

Let the auction begin from there....

Again, this is a dream scenario... So not really likely to happen...

At least 3 QB's will be taken ahead of the Lions with Panthers, Texans, and Colts picks so to me that leaves Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, and Tyree Wilson available.  Would take any of those 3 DL/DE's.

I wouldn't take corner at 6.  Might consider at 18 and if guy you loved was in the range of 14-15, would try to go up and get that guy.

Fully agree with everything here. There are certain positions that are variable that it doesn't pay to take in the top 5 or 10. CB is one of those. Quarterback is another, but it's a different breed because you kind of have to get your guy. For the love of God, I probably would never even take a tight end in the first round.

Wonder what the Jets would say about their Sauce Gardner pick?   Each draft is different and the Lions dont have many CBs to begin with that are good.   The free agents they signed at CB are for a 1 year deal and a 3 year deal.  So CB is still at play at 6 doesn't mean they do it but if they have a CB as their highest rated guy for the players available at 6 and he is there they draft that player.   O e thing about the GM is they draft what they think is best talent available.

Wonder what the Jets would say about their Sauce Gardner pick?

They're probably happy about it, but Sauce Gardner also hit it out of the park. Woodson was probably a good pick at #4 in 1998 as well. But it takes a very special CB to deserve to be picked that high--I'd venture to say most drafts don't have any.

I get Gronk went in the mid 2nd round, but he probably would have ended up being worth a top 10 pick had he been picked there. Ditto Kelce. But that doesn't mean you should be drafting TEs top 10, even if you need one. The Lions taking Ebron #10 was still a colossally stupid move.

If a player needs to end up being a generational talent to justify taking someone at that position so high, you probably shouldn't be drafting them in that spot...

It pretty much pans out as I expected. The Lions go D-Line as we either end up with Carter, Anderson, or Wilson. They are the most impactful Non-QB picks in the draft.

I prefer Wilson but would gladly take any of them. I wouldn't count on a CB with the second pick either unless Gonzalez, Witherspoon or maybe Porter was there. I could even see taking Bijan or Brian Branch @ 18.

Bijan in the first round would be a terrible choice for the Lions. They have so many holes on the defensive side of the ball, which is nothing to say about drafting a RB that high in the draft. It wouldn't make a lick of sense.

Archane or Charbonnet would be fine mid round options if they choose to spend a pick on a RB. But personally I like Williams, and from there they just need depth/health.

I was pumped because it means we don't have to reach for a CB at 6. Take Carter if he's not in jail, otherwise Wilson should be available.

Get Porter if he's still there at 18, or trade down like last year to get someone you love.

Take Carter, Anderson or Wilson at 6 and then Joey Porter later in the first round.  Doubt Witherspoon will be available.  Alternatively Bijan Robinson.

I bet the Lions would go apeshit if either Anderson or Carter falls to 6. They are by most accounts the two top players overall. But I suspect either Levis or Richardson will fall a bit and the Lions will miss out by 1 pick.

#6 Anderson

#18 Gonzales if available, Porter if not

#48 would love a LB in round 2 but the LB class isn’t super impressive this year. Basically I’d take Henley, Simpson and Sewell. Not sold on Campbell, Overshown, Sanders as pros. LB may be the Lions weak spot this year even though Anzalone is resigned. Would love to trade this pick for a starting, proven LB.

#55 Will Levis? A bit high here as he’s projected 4th round but that’s before the QB rush that’s since developed. Anyone looking for a QB and can’t get Stroud/Young/Richardson will be looking at Levis. I’d also be happy with TE (LaPorta or Washington should be available here)

Rest of the draft is “fill in holes” so best of RB, DL, LB, S, CB in the 3rd-5th rounds

Porter will never get past Pittsburgh at 17 and I will not trade up to grab a CB from 18.  If they take a DL at 6 (PLEASE PLEASE be Anderson, Wilson or Carter would be good as well) then trade down from 18, there are a few really go CB after the top 3 (Gonzalez, Witherspoon, Porter).  For example Banks, Smith, or Forbes (if they can get 20#'s on him)...
