After the regular season, after early-NSD season, comes "which players are skipping their mid-tier bowl to enter the draft" season. SO glad we don't have to be part of that this year.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:20 PM ^
Even the "mid-tier" bowls are still more interesting matchups with meaningful opponents than most of the regular season games. MSU vs Pitt should be a *much* better game to play (and for NFL scouts to watch) than vs Indiana, MD, Rutgers, NW and their MAC/Sunbelt opponents. This mindset of the games being "meaningless" is rather absurd.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:40 PM ^
But isn't the Peach Bowl one of the NYE 6 or 7 games? So now even these are meaningless for the NFL hopefuls?
December 16th, 2021 at 5:45 PM ^
I suppose the moment any player gets a high draft projection by someone they should just shut down the rest of their college season. If playing in one game is too much risk to their draft stock, think about the risk from a whole season!
December 16th, 2021 at 6:00 PM ^
It’s only a matter of time til players are sitting out the CFP. I mean really, if Hutch decided to sit out, would you really blame him?
December 16th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
If Hutch decided to sit out the CFP? Yes, I would blame him…
Fortunately, it’ll never happen:)
December 16th, 2021 at 6:45 PM ^
Players can purchase insurance in case they get hurt. It's not nearing as good as what a top player would otherwise get, however, it does provide some basic measure of financial protection. I don't know if the schools provide it, however, if they want kids to play in the bowl games ... they should.
December 16th, 2021 at 7:04 PM ^
Actually what I love about Hutch is that he wouldn’t even contemplate doing such a thing.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:11 PM ^
Fuck yeah I could and would blame him. Just sit out your entire college career...
December 16th, 2021 at 9:09 PM ^
I see your point but if you do that why even bother playing football? Just sit out your entire collegiate career and wait for the draft.
December 17th, 2021 at 12:43 PM ^
Actually, yes.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:03 PM ^
Didn’t Bush, Gary, and Higdon sit out the Peach Bowl?
December 16th, 2021 at 8:07 PM ^
Ask Jabrill Peppers
December 16th, 2021 at 7:09 PM ^
I believe Pickett is sitting out for Pitt, so kinda evens things up. Probably, msu gets the best of that trade off.
December 16th, 2021 at 10:04 PM ^
I think one key difference is sitting out the bowl game isn't consider a red flag to scouts that the player has a bad attitude, if a guy shuts it down halfway through the season I believe a lot of NFL teams would view the guy as someone with a bad attitude. In the current climate I don't think anyone is hurting their draft stock skipping any bowl that is not the playoffs.
December 16th, 2021 at 6:16 PM ^
Does he still get the swag bag?
December 16th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
Good for him. Great player and I will not miss him. OTOH any truth to the rumor Goodwin still hasn’t signed w Kentucky and may still be lookin at Msu? What a shit show
December 16th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
He signed his LOI today.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:27 PM ^
Good win for Kentucky.
Lit and fig
December 16th, 2021 at 4:26 PM ^
The coaches have talked about him, which they can't unless he signs the LOI.
December 16th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
Good for him and us
December 16th, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
FWIW it's not OT -- MSU is a future opponent!
December 16th, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
What??? Are you sure? Let me check the schedule.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:16 PM ^
What does it say?!?! I've read on this blog that we even have to go on the road again! /s
December 16th, 2021 at 5:18 PM ^
We are smart here (allegedly) and we don't need the '/s' or 'sarc/' at the end of a comment. For those like myself with reduced age-related mental faculties, we have our ACME Sarcasm Detectors just to be on the safe side.
December 16th, 2021 at 9:52 PM ^
You forgot the /s
December 16th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
Anyone with a high draft status should not play in a bowl if its not playoff at this point. Ask Jake Butt and quite a few others. Forget insurance or a $2M NIL deal. These guys often come from little to nothing and can make generational wealth for their family on the first contract and certainly the second.
Selfishly we would love them to play but that's our hearts not brains. Except the old guy shouting at cloud telling people they gave up on the team yada yada.
December 16th, 2021 at 3:57 PM ^
Might not want to ask Jake. I just heard guys on the radio referencing him as someone who would've played the game again if he had the chance.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:25 PM ^
He did say that - he actually enjoys playing the game and loved every time he could play for UM. That is how it *should* be.
I would like to see that actual % of nfl-bound players that get injured in bowl games vs those that haven't over the past 10-20 years... I would expect it to be a *very* low ratio. Everyone can cherry pick the examples that support their argument (Jake being a favorite around here), but the greater stats don't really support it.
December 16th, 2021 at 6:23 PM ^
If you told me that I had a 1% chance of taking a massive paycut or completely missing out on getting drafted if I play in one game that is mostly inconsequential, I would probably sit out too.
December 16th, 2021 at 6:28 PM ^
What if it was 0.1%? Or even 0.01%?
A 1% serious injury rate is actually quite a large number when you consider how many players are actually involved.
Also, the "huge pay cut" isn't necessarily going to happen even with an injury.
I'm not saying that there are "never" good times/scenarios to sit out a bowl games... but I do believe the "risk" that people cite is dramatically overstated.
Also (if the financial aspect is the primary consideration), one also should consider how much a bowl game can help boost stock. Bowl games almost always have a quality opponent that is about the same level as one's own team (no cupcakes or monsters) - meaning it because a great platform to make a playing statement.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:03 PM ^
Yep. What's the average NFL career length for RBs? <5 years I'm sure. At some point you gotta make a business decision and the majority of the bowls are just exhibition games
December 16th, 2021 at 7:54 PM ^
And once your team has lost enough games to be out of the running for a CFP berth, just quit playing. It's not as if your Scholarship is a contract...sarcasmmmmm
December 16th, 2021 at 4:04 PM ^
Completely support any NFL-bound player who chooses to protect himself rather than play in the fucking Peach Bowl.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:05 PM ^
I certainly understand that viewpoint and I don't blame players for opting out if it's not an elite bowl game. That said, I think some/many players just love playing football and more yet feel like they achieved that high draft status in part because of their team and teammates. They don't owe the fans anything but its very understandable (and commendable) to feel a bit of an obligation to the team. So I think your use of "should" is wrong because it implies they are making a poor decision by playing.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:43 PM ^
On the other hand, Walker is basically a one-year rental/mercenary with no tie to msu other than this season. He went there because they were wide open at the position and he'd get his shot to make some draft noise. Mission accomplished.
December 16th, 2021 at 6:35 PM ^
Fair point, but he may feel some gratitude to Tucker and others for giving him the opportunity to drastically improve his future outlook. Obviously, Walker is making a completely sound decision especially since he's a RB but I am not loving when people say he should not be playing like he's doing something wrong. It's understandable either way.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:07 PM ^
I wish it weren't this way, but it's getting there. Particularly, frankly, for players that aren't surefire top picks. Trevor Lawrence could have gotten hurt on his first postseason pass last year and still would have been picked #1 overall; someone that's not as much of a sure thing needs to go through the NFL evaluation process (particularly when playing a position where measurables are important, like RB) and they can lose quite a bit getting hurt in a bowl.
I would say/hope that the only real exception to this rule is the Rose Bowl, which is not just another bowl game. At least, not to me. We'll see what the OSU future pros think about it.
Walker is making the right choice for him. If we were in the Peach Bowl, we'd see the same thing.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:09 PM ^
I was at that game and Jake's who family was in the section next to me. It was really sad to watch them as he was helped to the locker room. Jake will always be a Michigan legend though!
December 16th, 2021 at 4:20 PM ^
Yep. I was there too. One of the worst moments of my life that didn't involve loss of life.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:38 PM ^
People on blog message boards should quit telling players what they should or shouldn't do and just allow them to make their own damn choice and support it either way.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
I'm pretty sure that players make their own damn choice anyway, no matter what people on blog message board say.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:30 PM ^
Why did he play vs Penn state?
December 16th, 2021 at 5:56 PM ^
For the playoff sp... oh.
For that Big Ten Champi... oh.
For that historic rivalry troph... oh.
For the team that he's been leading for so many yea... oh.
Um... maybe he wanted to play in the snow?
December 16th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
Good thing Karan Higdon sat out his bowl game to preserve his unstaffed, zero career carries NFL career.
December 16th, 2021 at 6:39 PM ^
as much as i understand the decision of some that don't play in a bowl, his didn't jibe well. not because he didn't have any reason, but because he was a captain. that is an exceptional honor and recognition of his loyalty to the team and of the team to him. he could very easily have started that game and not played much, had a miniscule chance of any injury, and still fulfilled his captain's duties.
December 16th, 2021 at 7:08 PM ^
I get what's at stake but ........why have these bowls if the players aren't going to play in them? Tickets are hundreds if not thousands of dollars (for the CFP games), getting there is hundreds of dollars, then there's hotel, food....I mean why pay all that money when the teams aren't the same ones that played during the season?
December 17th, 2021 at 2:34 AM ^
Because the corporate sponsors need something to sponsor and attach their bazillion commercial breaks to and school and ncaa suits need a nice winter holiday?
As for guys sitting out..thats just an opportunity for the next guy to showcase his talents and create buzz going into next year. So its all good in the end.
December 16th, 2021 at 3:56 PM ^
Sucks for their fanbase as we know all too well. Understandable for the players. Other than the Playoff, the bowls have been rendered irrelevant.
December 16th, 2021 at 5:08 PM ^
If your goal is the NFL and NFL $$$, is the college Playoff really even relevant?
Might not be long until players sit that out too.
