OT- Kenneth Walker to the draft

Sitting out the peach bowl.

I get the rationale but it really discounts bowl season short of the CFP

After the regular season, after early-NSD season, comes "which players are skipping their mid-tier bowl to enter the draft" season.  SO glad we don't have to be part of that this year.

Even the "mid-tier" bowls are still more interesting matchups with meaningful opponents than most of the regular season games.  MSU vs Pitt should be a *much* better game to play (and for NFL scouts to watch) than vs Indiana, MD, Rutgers, NW and their MAC/Sunbelt opponents.  This mindset of the games being "meaningless" is rather absurd.

Players can purchase insurance in case they get hurt.  It's not nearing as good as what a top player would otherwise get, however, it does provide some basic measure of financial protection.  I don't know if the schools provide it, however, if they want kids to play in the bowl games ... they should.

I think one key difference is sitting out the bowl game isn't consider a red flag to scouts that the player has a bad attitude, if a guy shuts it down halfway through the season I believe a lot of NFL teams would view the guy as someone with a bad attitude. In the current climate I don't think anyone is hurting their draft stock skipping any bowl that is not the playoffs.

Good for him. Great player and I will not miss him. OTOH any truth to the rumor Goodwin still hasn’t signed w Kentucky and may still be lookin at Msu? What a shit show

Anyone with a high draft status should not play in a bowl if its not playoff at this point.  Ask Jake Butt and quite a few others.  Forget insurance or a $2M NIL deal.  These guys often come from little to nothing and can make generational wealth for their family on the first contract and certainly the second.

Selfishly we would love them to play but that's our hearts not brains.  Except the old guy shouting at cloud telling people they gave up on the team yada yada.

He did say that - he actually enjoys playing the game and loved every time he could play for UM.  That is how it *should* be.

I would like to see that actual % of nfl-bound players that get injured in bowl games vs those that haven't over the past 10-20 years... I would expect it to be a *very* low ratio.  Everyone can cherry pick the examples that support their argument (Jake being a favorite around here), but the greater stats don't really support it.

What if it was 0.1%?  Or even 0.01%?

A 1% serious injury rate is actually quite a large number when you consider how many players are actually involved.

Also, the "huge pay cut" isn't necessarily going to happen even with an injury.

I'm not saying that there are "never" good times/scenarios to sit out a bowl games... but I do believe the "risk" that people cite is dramatically overstated.

Also (if the financial aspect is the primary consideration), one also should consider how much a bowl game can help boost stock.  Bowl games almost always have a quality opponent that is about the same level as one's own team (no cupcakes or monsters) - meaning it because a great platform to make a playing statement.

I certainly understand that viewpoint and I don't blame players for opting out if it's not an elite bowl game.  That said, I think some/many players just love playing football and more yet feel like they achieved that high draft status in part because of their team and teammates.  They don't owe the fans anything but its very understandable (and commendable) to feel a bit of an obligation to the team.  So I think your use of "should" is wrong because it implies they are making a poor decision by playing.

Fair point, but he may feel some gratitude to Tucker and others for giving him the opportunity to drastically improve his future outlook.  Obviously, Walker is making a completely sound decision especially since he's a RB but I am not loving when people say he should not be playing like he's doing something wrong.  It's understandable either way.

I wish it weren't this way, but it's getting there. Particularly, frankly, for players that aren't surefire top picks. Trevor Lawrence could have gotten hurt on his first postseason pass last year and still would have been picked #1 overall; someone that's not as much of a sure thing needs to go through the NFL evaluation process (particularly when playing a position where measurables are important, like RB) and they can lose quite a bit getting hurt in a bowl.

I would say/hope that the only real exception to this rule is the Rose Bowl, which is not just another bowl game. At least, not to me. We'll see what the OSU future pros think about it.

Walker is making the right choice for him. If we were in the Peach Bowl, we'd see the same thing.

as much as i understand the decision of some that don't play in a bowl, his didn't jibe well.  not because he didn't have any reason, but because he was a captain.  that is an exceptional honor and recognition of his loyalty to the team and of the team to him.  he could very easily have started that game and not played much, had a miniscule chance of any injury, and still fulfilled his captain's duties.

I get what's at stake but ........why have these bowls if the players aren't going to play in them? Tickets are hundreds if not thousands of dollars (for the CFP games), getting there is hundreds of dollars, then there's hotel, food....I mean why pay all that money when the teams aren't the same ones that played during the season?

Because the corporate sponsors need something to sponsor and attach their bazillion commercial breaks to and school and ncaa suits need a nice winter holiday?

As for guys sitting out..thats just an opportunity for the next guy to showcase his talents and create buzz going into next year. So its all good in the end.

Sucks for their fanbase as we know all too well.  Understandable for the players.  Other than the Playoff, the bowls have been rendered irrelevant.
