OT-ish: Poorly behaved alumnus at football gate Saturday

Submitted by MottNP on October 31st, 2022 at 4:25 PM

To the alumnus who got in the face of the ticket taker/Event staff member at the main football gate on Saturday, shame on you. Getting up in their face, yelling, because YOU didn't download your ticket ahead of time, is unacceptable. Saying "I pay your salary" is laughable and disgusting, because 1. You don't likely and 2. They essentially are volunteers and 3. how disgustingly elitist.

Shame on you and your behavior. Do better.

(Mods, delete if you must, I'm just PO'd at this behavior, and my son works the gate)

I hope the mods don't take this down because this behavior should be pointed out and criticized. I've seen similar things. In fact I worked at a movie theater when I was in high school and once I had a customer go off on me because there was sales tax on the popcorn. I remember thinking I could have been his son.

Exactly.  I cannot stand that behavior.  We have club seats.  My son could be sitting in those watching the game in comfort.  He chooses to do this.  Gets paid like 30 bucks to be there for 6 hours.  I so wish I had seen this myself or had a name.  I can't stand people who think they are better than others, or blame people for things they  have no control of (sales tax on popcorn)

My husband works security at Wrigley Field. This is his "retirement" career, he was an ad guy in his former life. He deals with this ALL THE TIME. Entitlement, and even worse, drunken entitlement. People who think they should be let on the field to talk to the players. Kids who already have three baseballs not getting in the back of the line so a kid who doesn't have any balls can get one. People who think they should be able to sit wherever they want because a seat is empty. And then the worst, when he goes to tell someone they can't do something like talk on the phone at high volume while standing up in the middle of the aisle during the game, blocking everyone's view, and they blame him, with a couple of people even calling him a racist. The stories of entitlement by people from all walks of life absolutely blow my mind.

Spot on. This kind of boorish behavior is tolerated now to the point that society effectively condones it and enables more off the wall shenanigans. Now get off my lawn…

Part of a general coarsening of public discourse and interactions. I see it everywhere.  I am trying to think of the public figure who normalized and even encouraged this type of behavior.  It has definitely gotten worse.  Their name escapes me.

Dude you need to get off FoxNews.  The people you listed have come nowhere close to demonstrating the lack of decency and civility - and the chronic lying - shown by Donald Trump. To suggest otherwise demonstrates an impressive level of cognitive dissonance and a severe disconnect from reality.

Grass is where the Deep holes are. Where you can stick your head. Because you've been censorshipped into believing this. I would just ask you in a polite way to research those same people who you think have never advocated violence and you will see otherwise.

Serious answer.

Because I wasn't there.  I 100% would have had I been there.  My son has mild cognitive impairment and gets easily intimidated, or he would have to.  I doubt the person is an MGoBlog person, and I doubt they are on the alumni association boards, but I posted to both so that they know they were seen, and perhaps try to improve themselves.  Likely an ass will always be an ass---

I was at the game. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary  but then again I'm so into the game and the field I'm not paying attention to much else.

But let me ask you what do you expect from people pre game drinking for average of 4 hours? I was tailgating with a bunch of friends from 330 at the big house. And let me tell you most people aren't just sipping on a cocktail,  it's mostly drink alot as fast as you can. Lol. Drunk people are stupid and annoying. Always have been. But they spend lots and lots of money and everyone is happy.

I'd bet any night game at any major program you will have the exact same behavior on average. Michigan is not unique.

This is a stupid thread. Drunk people do drunk things. Drunk people are also loud and make the environment much better.

The irony being that in all likelihood this douche didn't actually show that well himself on the SAT and is over compensating.

90% of the time (completely made up statistic, though supported anecdotally) when people pick something like this to crow about, it is because they themselves are "lacking" or less than confident about themselves. This guy is SAT-phobic.

Former usher here.  Afternoon games were always the worst since people had an extra three hours to drink.  There was always the drunk stragglers struggling to make it up the steps around the tunnel.

Evening games are probably even worse.

I'll add in that the guy in section 37 row 51 sounded like he was about to commit multiple acts of domestic violence later. Get control over yourself and enjoy it when we win. Quit being a miserable entitled shit.

In my day, the "Do you know who I am?!?!" response was reserved for people who actually had a bit of cachet.  Now, it's used by a bunch of nobodies who use it because they think they're someone.

I'm so glad you posted this. I know you didn't say this in full, but I have a soft spot in my heart for special needs individuals. I have a number of special needs adults who attend the church where I am a pastor, and I love that they feel welcome here. I know they can be easily frazzled and intimidated. I'm thrilled that your son can do this (ticket taking,) and not happy that he had to deal with this boorish and rude behavior.

There is something else here which I don't know the answer to. I have ALWAYS thought that ALL of us have the responsibility to call out inappropriate speech and behavior. If we see a bully or a jerk, speak up. If we see a parent acting abusively towards a child, speak up. Don't look the other way when you see something bad happening. I have read a number of comments regarding the inappropriate actions of MSU players towards Gemon Green and Ja'Den Burrows asking why no one stepped in and did anything.

HOWEVER . . . I have also heard from law enforcement and police suggesting that we SHOULDN'T do anything when witnessing bad behavior . . . "just let the police, just let the professionals take care of it." I guess I get that we don't want someone to pull a gun on us, but I'd love to hear from someone with the police or law enforcement:  should we speak up, or should we just call for police, when something like this happens?

I'm not police or law enforcement, but I think there is a scale to level of bad behavior and an element of timing to it.

In this case, there would be no need to get physical, but a crowd of M fans telling him he is being an asshole and telling him to STFU and deal with his own mistake might actually get him to......STFU and deal with his own mistake. I would have happily mentioned it to him directly had I been there.

With other stuff where physical harm is happening/imminent, it is a tough call, as a bigger guy I feel some responsibility to step in, and have, if a woman, child, or much smaller guy is in in a bad situation. I definitely make sure the authorities are on their way first and then mostly try to talk and distract and buy time, but a few times that hasn't worked and it is what it is.

No doubt. But as Michigan fans and players we need to clean up our own house first. I didn't feel comfortable with Corum joking about Mel Tucker post game and Edwards retweeting ( and then apologizing) his antisemitic post . I know they are very good kids off the field but the internet and social media has made everything public and permanent.
