Two really nice pickups by the Mets; not sure if it makes them the leaders in the East but absolutely makes them a likely playoff team.

Also, glad Cleveland is falling apart a bit; Tigers might have a chance to compete sooner than I thought.

Mets are really going for it under Cohen. They lead for Springer too and might get Bauer. If they sign Springer and Bauer, they will have underachieved if they don't come close to winning the World Series

I don't know about not winning the World Series.

Dodgers are probably still the team to bet.

Padres are ascending.

Braves have a good group.

Yankees are always dangerous.

But yeah, on paper the Mets are starting to look like a true contender.

I'm happy for the Mets because they're my father's team. I hope he gets to see them win a World Series in the near future.

Serious question: I am a Mets fan (first game at Shea was the Buckner game) but I don't watch a ton of American League baseball.  What's Lindor's game like?

Definitely a Buyer's market......back when the Tigers got Miggy and Dontrelle, Tigers had to part with 2 prospects rated by some as top 10 in all of baseball.

These days, you can pull off a trade by giving up 2 of a TEAM's top 10 prospects.

Hopefully when the Tigers are ready to spend, they can pull off a similar trade.

Cleveland fan here. Stinks to see Lindor go but the FO was never going to pay him and give him the years, as that would be idiotic for a small market team. Also he's probably the 3rd best player on the team over the last two years. Jose Ramirez and Shane Bieber were far more consistent producers. His bat remained solid in 2020 but his defense has deteriorated and I think it will continue to do so. The Mets sent rookie Jiminez (.732 OPS in 2020), a middling 25yo middle infielder, and their #9 and #10 prospects. Lindor carried a .750 OPS in 2020. If Jiminez can really pop and develop, the production trade off may not be that bad. As for Carrasco, this is also a bummer after his career as a fan favorite in Cleveland and all he went through. Tito and his staff have shown a strong ability to develop pitching in Cleveland, hopefully that continues. With all of that being said, this is another move by ownership that won't go over well with fans. The payroll has fallen off of a cliff despite the club having a very good young core that is only short a few pieces. If the Dolans are actually unable to spend, you'd love to see them sell the club. If they have the money and refuse to invest it in the club, that's just sad. Still, the front office has continued to thrive at finding value and winning in trades (with a few exceptions) so that keeps them afloat, but the average fan will look at this deal and think it's the same old Dolans, right or wrong.

As a Met fan, I’m ecstatic about the trade, but it’s not all bad news for Cleveland. Gimenez had a really good year in the albeit short 2020 season. He may not have Lindor’s glove, but it’s very good, He’s a former top 50 prospect. Rosario is a former top 10 prospect. He had an excellent second half of 2019, but otherwise has been a disappointment in part because he swings at everything. He has good wheels (if he can get on base) and an erratic glove - the guy who can go into the hole grab the hard hit ball and throw a strike to first and then on the next play mishandle the grounder right at him and then throw it into the dugout. He’s the kind of guy who might really benefit from a change of scenery. Wolf was a second rounder in 2019, but had first round skills as evidenced by the over slot signing. His velocity has increased since signing, but that’s come with worsening command. I’ve seen him ranked around 7th or 8th among Met prospects. Finally Greene was taken in the supplemental second round last summer. He had a good instructional camp, hitting north of .400. He too has been ranked around 7th or 8th among Met prospects.

Yep, you should definitely be excited. Most of my thoughts are on the basis that Cleveland was never going to pay Lindor anyway. I think he will be good for at least a few years, I'd bet the Mets will keep him. I also just have faith in the Cleveland GM that they'll continue to compete, they've had a good bit of roster turover the last few years losing Brantley, Kluber, and others, but they've been able to continue to compete. Cookie is a tougher bet, but if he's healthy he will be a major asset and can pitch from the bullpen too. I hope the Mets succeed, I like seeing that franchise as an NL competitor.

Also a life-long Cleveland Spiders fan. Thanks for your note. I have read that the Spiders are also trying to dump Jose Ramirez, because they don't believe they can afford him either. The Cleveland payroll, post the Lindor and Carrasco dump, is about the same as what the Tigers pay Miggy. Actually $ 40 M right now, including Jose. Can things be that bad for the Cleveland franchise?

Next year has to be the year where they begin spending again.  Fans will be back in the stands and hopefully the Mizes, Skubals, Mannings of the world in addition to Greene and Tork form a strong nucleus.  Then they can spend some money on middle infielder or corner outfield positions.  They should lock up 2 more solid prospects in the next 2 drafts.

So depressing as a Cleveland fan. If you’re not going to plan on signing homegrown talents like Francisco Lindor, don’t own a fucking baseball team.
