OT - Hilton Head Golf Recommendations

Submitted by Watching From Afar on June 21st, 2022 at 1:44 PM

Hey everyone,

Headed to Hilton Head with my wife and the in-laws for the week of the 4th. Haven't been down there since I was a kid and golfed with my dad, so I don't remember where we went. I'm not a good golfer by any means, but I'm respectable and if I'm going to be down there for a week, might as well get a round or 2 in. My father-in-law hasn't golfed in years, but since I'm going he wants to come along at least once. I'm expecting him to struggle mightily.

So my request is for golf courses on/around Hilton Head Island, that aren't crazy expensive. I know if you go off island you can find ones that are like $50 for a round and given it's July I'll be looking at early morning or late afternoons to avoid the heat and maybe find some cheaper rates. So maybe 1 cheaper, decent course for the 2 of us to play, and then a slightly nicer one that I may go off and play on my own.

Also, if there are any other general Hilton Head recommendations for things to do, places to eat, I'm all ears!

Just went down there about a month ago. Honestly if you're looking to just get some golf in and on the higher handicap side of things, I would suggest calling a few places for twilight rates. I think at the time we did 18 at Shipyard and we asked how much to stay out and was $30 all you can golf after 5pm. There was like one other foursome for 36 holes, so we blasted music and had a great time. Girl in the clubhouse said no one does twilight on the island so a good way to get out for cheap and no one hasseling you to keep pace.

Have fun!

Yeah, when I go online I see the drop in rates starting around 3-5pm, but they're still up north of $60. Which isn't bad if I'm going out to golf 18, but I worry my FIL will get frustrated/look for the exit after 11 or 12 holes, so I don't want to drop $60 on a round and then only play part of it.

So just call some pro shops and see if they have different rates than what I see online, or take the online reservation prices as gospel?

I can't help you with your request; however, just want to say that the last time I was at Hilton Head was March 1978. When we came across the island's 7-11 store and noticed that the numbers were depicted as Roman Numerals, I knew I was out of my financial league.

Get to Steamer Seafood and order you a Big Red Voodoo Skillet.....  its been a few years, but I still dream about that....

Live music and a respectable craft beer selection at Big Bamboo Cafe is nice too.

Not a golfer, but i recall you couldn't throw a dead cat without it landing on a fairway down there.

I really enjoyed Eagle's Pointe in Bluffton.  Nice design, and the course was in great shape.  However, this was 6 years ago.  I just searched it because I couldn't remember what city it was in, and it appears to be poorly reviewed based on it's recent condition.

In conclusion, I'm of no help.

I had a great meal at Redfish, Stu's surfside subs was the best sub I've ever had, plus $1 PBRs.  180 proof daiquiris at the Frosty Frog if you feel like getting torched.

I usually play one of the Palmetto Dunes courses if not gunning for Harbor Town or the Ocean Course (which only has one view of the ocean) now known as Atlantic Dunes.

For restaurants, I like Skull Creek Bistro and next door Hudsons is a little nicer.  Lowcountry Backyard is a pretty chill spot with good eats.  Probably have to make the stop at Salty Dog.

Hard to go wrong there, most spots are good.

If you like Asian food go to Pangaea Grill in downtown Carmel-By-The-Sea. Make a reservation well in advance. You're welcome.

Other options are Max's Grill and Duffy's Tavern in Monterrey.

Wife and I used to go down to Monterrey for a weekend here and there when we lived in the Bay Area.

Aside from food, I have no idea what you or your wife like to do like to do so .... Monterrey Bay aquarium is awesome and has a great bar and decent food?

Haven’t been to HH in a while (10-15 years), but there were 3 courses in the Palmetto Dunes area ( a Fazio, a Robert Trent Jones and an Arthur Hills). All were good, with the RTJ being the best. Don’t remember the prices being outrageous, but each time I went, there was a charity challenge on an early par 3, where you donate $10 and try to beat the pro (I never did). I think this was on the RTJ course, but it might have been on the Hills course. You got a 2-ball sleeve for trying, plus a discount card. The discount card was gold, since it gave 10% or 20% off your restaurant dining bill and included about 40 of the HH restaurants at which you’d like to dine. You could use the card multiple times, but no more than once at any single restaurant.

If this setup still exists and you dine out a lot, the golf ends up being almost free (especially if you play the RTJ course the first day you arrive).

I loved the HH beaches - firm, hard sand on which you can ride a bike, and it goes for well over a mile, so you can have a long stroll.

Great memory - my wife and I made a reservation at a sports bar, so we’d be able to watch one of Michigan’s NCAA tournament games. The room held about 20 people. Shortly after we arrived, about 16 guys arrived straight off the golf course - they were all in HH for a bachelor party. They were having a great time (not obnoxious or rude), but were far too loud for us to watch the UM game, so we moved to a table just outside that room. The guys felt bad we had to move, so they comped us our dinner, and we returned the favor by sending in a tray or two of Jäegermeister shots. We had a lot of laughs with the two dads in the group. Michigan won the game and everyone had a great time.

Enjoy your HH trip!

Bloody Point on Daufuskie is a great course with awesome views.  You can grab a water taxi from sea pines.  Have not been there in years, but did not seem to expensive.

Not golf-related but if you haven't been to Savannah yet it's a must, especially if you're into history at all. It's probably the most beautiful city I've ever seen, and it's laid out perfectly (it's a grid with parks in the middle of every block). My wife and I have been twice and will probably go back again! If you want a higher-class meal, the Olde Pink House was phenomenal.

While I'm an avid golfer, I have not played on Hilton Head, though I will still look forward to doing that someday.

Came here to mention that I absolutely loved a seafood joint called Poseidon.  They had an incredible seafood platter.  I would go back in a second.

Also, be sure to spend at least part of a day in Savannah.   That is all.  Have fun.

IMO the food on HH is not that great. It's tourist food. Lots of seafood platters and fried food.

Better dining options in Bluffton, about 25 minutes off the island. There's a place called Farm that has outstanding food and cocktails. Also Cahill's Market and Chicken is a really charming roadhouse with fantastic fried chicken.
