OT: Fox Sports - ten coaches that MSU should consider

Submitted by Amazinblu on September 19th, 2023 at 5:07 PM

The following article (not paywalled) from Fox Sports touches on the coaching situation in EL and identifies ten candidates should Mel not return to the Spartan's sideline.   Here's the link - and the list of coaches.

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/michigan-states-next-move-10-potential-coach-candidates

  • Mike Elko - Duke
  • Lance Leipold - Kansas
  • Pat Narduzzi - Pitt
  • Mark Stoops - Kentucky
  • Dave Doeren - NC State
  • PJ Fleck - Minnesota
  • Jason Candle - Toledo
  • Sean Lewis - OC Colorado
  • Matt House - DC LSU
  • Harlon Barnett - Interim Head Coach

Any thoughts on this list?   If you were the AD - any coaches "stand out" - which ones?   Fleck's caught my attention.

Sean Lewis is the one guy that would be scary at MSU because he's been an HC already at Ken St and did well there, and that offense could work well with the level of talent MSU can get.

I don't see guys like Elko or Leipold taking a lateral job like MSU.  Maybe Narduzzi leaves Pitt and then you get a shittier version of Dantonio which would be fine by me.

trying my best to be objective, who the heck is going to want to go to EL unless sparty (again) pays a king's ransom, or they take a chance on some dude who's got a mediocre or at best very short resume?

that hire might be tougher than they think unless they pay some serious $.

Basically anyone other than a HC in the B1G or SEC would be interested. The scandal stuff doesn't resonate as loudly from far away as from within the state of Michigan and immediately surrounding areas. The big draw is the B1G TV $$$ and the 'promise' of ~3 playoff spots per year. Once divisions go away and the playoff expands next year, you won't have to beat Michigan or OSU to make the playoff.

I suspect MSU will be gun shy about spending big bucks right away. To me that means hiring a rising young coach, all rah rah, with big plans, who sees MSU as their chance to get on the big stage. As I stated above I would pick Sean Lewis, who was a successful HC in the MAC, and whose offense would be somewhat unique in the B1G.

I think most coaches that have a 5-7 record in 1 season as head coach would be happy to get $95M guaranteed.

That being said, I think an asst like Tressel or Hartline would be a decent hire for them. Young and passionate. Wanting to build a program. Maybe only $6M a year if State cares at all about money.

RCMB has Saban v Urban v Prime discussions. It's possible all 3 coach together.  As Dantoni said MSU is not a place you pilfer a stupid AD for $95m it's where all those coaches want to retire.

So many coaches gonna die to take ishbia money. He is making Hazelton and Johnson families millionaires.  So many hacks gonna line up to take the free ishbia money to do nothing

.MSU is the easy pawn at the poker table and every mediocre coach is in line to suck at that teat.

Of all the names on the list, only the last one, Harlon Barnett has a chance right now because he is already there and would be a simple hire.

The others will want to be sure the AD and other leadership won't suddenly be changed in light of what is increasingly becoming a bigger story than just one person's incredibly bad judgement. Worst case, the current AD and whomever else was involved also gets broomed.

Barnet won't get it because I just think this season is going to spiral.  Washington was a disaster of a game and they have 3 more opponents at the same level plus at least one "Sparty No!!!" game to come, does 7-5 with 4 big losses to UW, UM, OSU, PSU get you the job.

I also think there will be internal pressure to completely clean house in the football program.

They need to clean the culture and stabilize the program, so I think that get's rid of anyone without experience. Matt House could be revisited in 4-5 years. PJ Fleck has stabilized Minnesota, and I know has had his issues. Could be a safer pick to go with him. Elko is going to hold out for A&M, and Leipold is a great rebuilder. I don't think msu needs to rebuild, but rebrand. Leipold will go to one of the bigger schools that's struggling. Maybe Clawson at Wake Forest

Hopefully they make Barnett permanent.

Leipold is the only one that brings a concern from my POV - he turns around programs and develops very challenging game plans.  However, he supposedly turned down Wisconsin and Nebraska last year - why would he go to the dumpster fire in EL?

Slightly off topic, but I’ve always thought these coaches like Fleck snd Stoops are smart for picking a school with low standards, get paid well, produce average results that fans think is amazing.

Stoops will have a statue erected- eh, poor choice of words considering Mel- in front of Kentucky’s stadium when he retires.

I don't think they could pull Mark Stoops.

Out of that list, the only names that would concern me (as a UM fan) are Leipold, Candle and Lewis.

Pat Narduzzi and his Pat Fitzgerald-like crusade against functional offense would be the "best" hire from my POV.

I don't think MSU and by the same factor (NW) fans realize how hard it is going to be to hire a coach while you are under litigation from a former coach. Agents will push their client away from those gigs...

This idea that they're going to pay anywhere near what they paid for Mel is way off base. More likely than not, I think MSU will be looking for a stabilizing force. An alum or a coaching retread think Pat Shurmur.

No way Elko leaves Duke for anything other than a really solid spot. Fans need to lower their expectations.

Candle would be a good hire. Done well at Toledo and only 43 years old.

Leipold would be a good hire too but he’s nearly 60.

So it depends on if they want to swing for a guy who could be there for 20+ years or go with more of a stopgap 5-10 year guy.

I think both would say yes to MSU.  The rest of that list…maybe the coordinators would say yes.

What is wrong with this board? Why does this post have a negative vote? This is the best summary I’ve read yet on this topic. The local yokels at the Detroit papers are obligated to have a list of ridiculous candidates, to get the Spartan faithful clicks.

This is good content that I, for one, would never have seen otherwise. And I don’t think it’s OT. The head coach of our second most important football rival is important and relevant to Michigan football.

Thanks, Amazinblu. Appreciated. I upvoted!
