Former 5* QB JT Daniels and the #16 player in the country in the 2018 class (#1 player in 2019 before reclassifying to 2018) has entered the transfer portal from USC. Michigan was in his final 2, but ultimately chose USC for the opportunity to start as a true freshman. He had an underwhelming freshman year before tearing his ACL his sophomore year and getting passed by Kedon Slovis. He was praised coming out of high school as being one of the most cognitively advanced high school QBs ever and essentially calling the plays for Mater Dei

Underwhelming freshman season, sure. He also had to play for Helton behind a Drevno OL when he should have been a senior in HS so... I'll give him a pass on that one.

That being said, no. Play McCaffrey or Milton. Let's get on with this.

I’d imagine bringing in JT (that is if we even pursue him) would put us at risk of losing one of the current QBs on the roster or JJ. Not sure that’s worth the risk

Not sure I buy this. The guys on our roster won't transfer just because we are pursuing a transfer QB. That's ridiculous. And if they quit that easily they weren't the guy. If one of our guys transfers AFTER Daniels comes here, he also wasn't the guy and we already have his replacement. I see no downside here.

Just a clarification: I'm not advocating for bringing in JT Daniels with this post. Just more of a PSA about a former top recruit we missed on

Not worth losing McCarthy. Or Milton or McCaffrey for that matter. He was a great recruit but UM has more than adequate talent and depth regardless.

Edit: Plus his name doesn’t start with M or Mc so he’s clearly not UM material

I can see Harbaugh's recruiting pitch now: "Hey there JT, we have experience taking former 5* QB transfers, giving them the starting job, and not holding them as accountable as other players on the team.  In fact, why don't you watch Shea Patterson go undrafted and tell me if that is something you are interested in?"

If you are the best of a mediocre group of QBs and the coaching staff is incapable of helping you improve, then I place a fair amount of the problem on a crappy coaching staff. We got damaged-Jimmy and it is so typical of Michigan’s fortunes anymore. Go Blue!

I'd be tempted to put money down that he would end up at osu, back up Fields for a year and take over, but they've already got several young QBs in the pipeline. Not sure they'd want to clog that up even more. He'll probably end up at Washington, get a waiver and start against UM the next 2 years.

because of injuries, etc - a team can never have 'too many' quality game-ready QB's... I mean that literally, because just about every D-1 QB thinks he should be getting more snaps... and many look for a team that will provide the opportunity

Can you imagine the negative recruiting that would go on if we took Daniels?  Why would any HS QB recruit go to U of M because Harbaugh is always looking for transfers. His recruits barely ever see the field.

No. We got talent here that we should be true to. I think there's a lot to be said for continuity. Our guys are good, they are familiar with the system, our qb situation is just fine.
