OT: Easiest class at U-M?

Submitted by BTB grad on

So I and many others will be registering for senior fall semester classes this week. I was wondering what mgobloggers thought the easiest class was in their time at Michigan, because who doesn't want a senior year that involves less studying and more Dominick's and Charley's?

Entry-level physics classes were very easy. Online homework and quizzes for math problems that are essentially just basic algebra.

Definitely the easiest I took was Math 597, Real Analysis. The class is just the professor at a whiteboard the whole time doing mathematical proofs, pretty simple. Some Math PhDs were in the class but the very best had taken it already and didnt't take it at UM.

I don't remember the number but I took Fourier Analysis one year. Literally nothing we did made sense to me. The final exam was a copy of the study guide we did together as a class so it was an easy B even if you stumbled through the homework like I did.

Physics 104- it's basically a middle school experiment every day.

Arab-Israeli conflict (I believe that's the name)- you act as a mediator between high school kids pretending to do diplomacy.

I took Roman Sports and Society. We watched gladiator a lot. I took geology course called volcanos.I took introduction to computers and html. I wanted something interesting but not mentally taxing. But I graduated 2002 so not sure if courses still there. A lot of the athletes were in same class.

Rocket Science is pretty easy whatever that's listed as. I heard one Prof. makes it VERY VERY VERY EASY. I had the "tougher" Prof. and the class was still easy, but had some busy work.

I took intro to arab american studies for my R&E and that wasn't too bad either. Soc 102 topics classes vary but mine wasn't bad.

Also interesting choice of Doms and Charleys. I was spending most of my time at Blue Lep, Charleys, and Ricks Senior Year. Sometimes Skeeps and WOB too.

It's incredible. Discussion section is optional. 6 exams (including the final, which is also optional), of 30 questions, scored out of 25. On top of that, the subject material is very interesting.

Look into taking an art/design course if that's something that could interest you. They have courses specifically for non-art majors. I took Intro to Clay for non-majors senior year and it was fun. There wasn't really much work that needed to be done outside of class (unless you mess something up bad), and it also allowed me to make a bunch of Christmas presents for free.

Or take something you're more interested in pass/fail. Taking 100 level Intro to Psych type courses as a senior is kind of lame IMO.

The way this class divides people fascinates me. I took the intro stats course because I needed the credit and my friend was in it. I thought it was the easiest class I had ever taken. But for whatever reason stats just doesn't click for some people. I worked as a stats tutor for two years in college and almost everyone I talked to about it either said it was incredibly easy or incredibly confusing. There wasn't much in between.

I believing you're speaking to me. Psych major here who required Stats 402 -- or as I liked to call it -- The Transformational Torture Test.

Sat through the entire semester looking around at other kids writing shit down in their notebooks during lecture, thinking -- "I wonder if Tony Boles will run for 100 on Saturday..."

I limped my way at a C+.

Any of the 1 credit GeoSci courses.

I found Psych 111 to be really easy, although I remember that there was one professor that was a lot harder than the others.

History 375 - Witchcraft. It wasn't a super easy class, but it was really interesting. You do have to do real work in it though. I think there were 2 exams and 2 essays you had to do.

If you can do upper level German courses, take German Soccer. Again, not an easy course, but a lot of fun.

ANTHRARC 284.  I graduated last year and took it in my final semester.  3 multiple choice/fill in the blank exams, no homework, no readings, no papers.  The material is pretty much pure memorization.  If you go to the lectures and take notes you'll be fine.

I took it with a bunch of people I knew and we all got easy As.

and 'tracking a wooly mammoth'.  some of the freshmen were learning about 'the wheel and its many uses', as well as classes on 'bronze - the new weapons material'.

The classic civ department has some gems, The History of Witchcraft (taught by a guy that looked like Obama) and Greek Myth (Dutch guy named Verhoogt I think) foremost among them. Both were fascinating and relatively easy, although not complete pushover classes.

The guy who looks like Obama was Dr. Collins. I had him for both Greek Myth and Witchcraft. He was my favorite professor in college and part of the reason I took Witchcraft was because he was teaching it. If you get the chance to take either class I highly recommend them. Each one has a couple papers to write, but the exams aren't bad and the material is really interesting.

I am taking History of Witchcraft and it isn't with an Obama impersonator, it is by Valerie Kivelson. I would say the class is related easy. I haven't done any of the assigned readings and I still got an A- on a paper. No exams, just 2 short papers, attendence, and one 5 page paper. Piece of cake, however my professor said they aren't offering this course for the next 2 years. I don't know if it is true or not though.

I did the same thing at UVA.  "Hey, I've got an extra spot in my schedule and no particular requirements.  Astronomy seems like a fun little grade booster."  What's this, a C??  Dammit.

UVA has a really old observatory, so the trip up there was cool.  The assignment was not.  It was "we'll point the telescope at something, you look into it and draw what you see."  I was like, sweet, I bet we're looking at Saturn or something sweet.  It was a random star cluster.  At least the assignment was easy.  Put tiny dots on the paper.  Done.

Rocket Science with Ridley is easy and interesting. Intro Psych classes are easy but loaded with busy work and you have to spend a total of 6 hours being someone's guiney pig.

The Polisci topics courses (300 and 389 I think) were always easy and actually really interesting.

Easiest class was Polish Jazz, though. Professor Piotr Michaelovski. May have retired. But great class. In general, LSA classes that reference music seem to be the way to go. A fraternity brother of mine took Jazz Meditation 6 times. Stopped getting credit for it, but just enjoyed it and thought it was a nice way to spend the time.

but I was in a sr seminar of like 10 people where we talked about our thoughts/ feelings on raceism. It was awesome, no work and you could BS and act like you read the assignments. I miss those days!
