OT: Big Baller Brand to sponsor Junior Professional Basketball League

Submitted by Qmatic on
Lavar Ball, founder and CEO of Big Baller Brand announced today that he will sponsor a professional basketball league aimed to attract the top prep players as an alternative to college ball. The league is offering 10k a month to the top players. Lavar Ball and his antics aside, what are your thoughts on this idea? I personally cannot see this league being successful. The type of competition, housing, nutrition, and strength & conditioning a player will receive in college (even for a year) will not be available in a league like this. Junior professional basketball I cannot see taking off in any aspect when top-level college ball is still around. https://sports.yahoo.com/lavar-ball-plans-new-basketball-league-pro-pro…

the first good idea I think LaVar Ball has had. That being said it's approximately a billion miles from "good idea" to "functioning product" but the idea is intriguing. I remember during the last NBA lockout there was talk of the players getting together and starting their own league, and even without putting salaries into the equation, there were major hurdles. I'm not comparing NBA salaries to 10k per month per player. My point is about the other challenges. Where would they play? Who handles ticket sales? What about insurance for the venues where they play? Assuming the league is small and regional, there's still a ton of logistics, what with hotels, travel, equipment etc. to consider. Also, do the players get 10k a month for 12 months a year or only in season? Are the contracts guaranteed? How many young players that can't get some kind of insurance policy want to take the risk of being hurt and then not even having the option of finishing their degree? These are only the things I can think of off the top of my head and I'm no genius. I'm sure there's a mountain of other issues I haven't even considered Again, a neat idea. I'm all for anything that give people an opportunity to earn a living by putting their talents on display. It'd be cool if it could work. It'd also be cool if I could sell Labrador poop for enough money to support my family.

This idea is already a functioning entity and it's called the NBA G League where all you need to be is 18 to be eligible. The top players have that option if they don't wanna go to college or they go overseas like Terrance Ferguson, Brandon Jennings and Emmanuel Mudiay have done in the past or even a kid who left High School as a junior and went overseas to play Jeremy Tyler.

Top basketball prospects are already making more than 10k a month at the Kentucky’s of the world. Nice idea but guys can make six figures and play college basketball

Even if they do get that support, the next question will be who's going to watch? I could be wrong but I have a hard time believing that even if they get the funding, that enough interest will be there for people to watch.

I don't know what Ball can offer that the G-League or playing overseas doesn't already offer aside from maybe slightly more money.

I don’t see how Ball can offer anything (aside from maybe more money) that the G League can’t already offer.

Who is going to coach these teams? Where are you playing the games? You say NBA arenas, but you think they’re going to agree to that? And how do you know that the coaches you bring in are quality enough to coach these kids and you’re not hiring some bum off the street? You may offer slightly more money now, but the real money is made when you’re in the league. And the G League, while not paying well, is a proven commodity that has NBA level coaching already. His league is going to be an extremely tough sell.

Who knows, it might work. Ball has already argued and yelled his way into becoming a household name so who am I to say this definitely won’t work. But I think this is another instance of an attention whore trying to stay in the news.

He’s going to need a lot of capital to get this off the ground. I just don’t see many investors lining up to hand him over loans with the history he has with making sound decisions.

Stop giving this idiot attention. He wants to be the star of the show and run his sons' lives to do just that. Sadly, it's not about his kids...it's about him. This is a case of living vicariously through others on steroids. He has turned his family into the Kardashians of the basketball world and should be treated as such. All this is over LaVar getting mad, taking his toys and going home. It will flop tremendously given the existence of the G Leauge. They are too many moving pieces to consider and his brand doesn't have enough capital to float the concept. Maybe Big Baller will become Big Bust and he will slither back to obscurity where he belongs.

The number of 17-20 year olds that are worth a 10K monthly salary are not enough to fill two basketball teams.  I'm one of those "Get off my lawn" dudes who doesn't believe in paying college athletes, so maybe I have too old school a mindset for this.

Maybe he should start a shop lifting anonymous class for anyone with the last name Ball. And then a class on how to be a decent human being, instead of pushing his medicore kids on the world of basketball........who buys his shit anyway?........anyone.....anyone?

The Valenti rule should apply to these people. If you want to get your latest BBB news in, go somewhere else, ESPN is a glutton about it, no need to bring it up again here. Someone needs to wake them up and take them out of their fantasy that they believe they live in.
