OT: Best/Worst Christmas movies

Submitted by Hotel Putingrad on
Sitting at home waiting for the furnace guy to show up, I stumble across "Santa with Muscles," starring Hulk Hogan and the incomparable Ed Begley, Jr. I'm still not sure which category this one falls into for me, but what are your picks for best and/or worst Christmas movie ever?

Full Metal Jacket...Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: "Today is Christmas. There will be a magic show at zero-nine-thirty. Chaplain Charlie will tell you how the free world will conquer Communism with the aid of God and a few Marines. God has a hard-on for Marines because we kill everything we see. He plays His games, we play ours. To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls. God was here before the Marines Corps. So you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Corps! Do you ladies understand??"

Sorry. Half of my Christmas lights don't work. I needed to vent.

"Love Actually" has kind of grown on me. The wife likes to watch it every year. The little kid who plays the drums, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, has carved out a solid career. He is the voice of Ferb, was on Game of Thrones for one season, and has a main part in the Maze Runner movies. As far as my favorite it is "Home Alone." That movie gets me every time. I have to admit I have watched "Santa With Muscles." I think there are worse Christmas movies out there.

Best: A Muppet's Christmas Carol hands down

Worst: Love Actually, I can usualy ignore the rest of the bad ones, but my wife loves it and so I can't avoid it(it at least has Keira Knightely in tiny sweaters to help alleviate the boredom).

Favorites:

 - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

 - Scrooged

 - Muppet Christmas Carol

 - Miracle On 34th Street

Worst:

- Santa Claus (1959 Mexican film, lampooned in season 5 of MST3K)

- Magic Christmas Tree (listen to the Rifftrax version, the movie by itself is unwatchable)

- Santa Claus: The Movie (why did Dudley Moore agree to this?)

I would say scrooged is a classic.  My son loves Polar express.

Gremlins is a personal fav for the Phoebe Cates Christmas speech.  That may be the weirdest most out of place sppech ever, and I loved it.

Like many of you, I can't pick just one. But there is one that hasn't made anyone's list yet, and it is an awesome movie:  Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas, in French, iirc). The movie is based on a true story of what happened one Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the front lines during World War I. I'd really recomend you give this movie a watch if you've never seen it.

A second movie with the best Christmas pageant scene EVER is called Simon Birch. I happen to really love this movie, although it is too saccharine and maudlin for many. Still, if nothing else, you need to see the whole Christmas pageant, from the rehearsals, to the actual pageant itself. I loved that scene, and rolled on the floor laughing.

Here is my list, from various genre.

  • Joyeux Noel
  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas
  • A Christmas Story
  • Home Alone
  • Elf
  • The Abominable Snowman
  • Simon Birch
  • The Nativity Story (not a perfect movie, but this is the only one I've seen that actually tells the Christmas story).
