OT: Best/Worst Christmas movies

Submitted by Hotel Putingrad on
Sitting at home waiting for the furnace guy to show up, I stumble across "Santa with Muscles," starring Hulk Hogan and the incomparable Ed Begley, Jr. I'm still not sure which category this one falls into for me, but what are your picks for best and/or worst Christmas movie ever?

Christmas story is absolutely fantastic and a must watch for me every time Christmas comes around.

I was so excited to watch it with my kids as when I was their age I thought it was the best, and it BOMBED with them.  Thinking about it, I realized as a child of the 80's the experiences I had growing up were broadly similar to Ralphie's experiences in A Christmas Story, maybe it was a little old fashioned but I could relate.  For a kid now, A Christmas Story must seem like it was filmed on a different planet.

You know what movie they just loved though....Home Alone.  Not sure if I should be happy they started drawing up plans for defending the house or worried that I have my very own generation of Jigsaws growing up under my roof.

In addition to ones that have been mentioned, I enjoyed the animated "A Christmas Carol" (Jim Carrey as Scrooge). Looks like it'd be for kids, but definitely isn't.

Also It's a Wonderful Life, every Christmas Eve.

Scrooged, Die Hard, Bad Santa, and Elf are all watched annually in my house.  But I'll watch pretty much any Christmas movie or cartoon.  Especially the claymation suff from the 60's.

I always loved Home Alone, my girlfriend is unhealthily obsessed with Elf.

I also have a soft spot for Jingle All the Way (a.k.a. "Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad battle over a doll") since my little sister used to watch it every year.

Home Alone 1 and 2, the Grinch, and the George C. Scott Christmas Carol.

edit: and somehow I missed It's A Wonderful Life.

Worst?  A Christmas Story is probably not the worst, but it's thoroughly overrated.

The Godfather

Hey, the Don was shot right before Christmas, Kay and Mike discuss Christmas presents, Sollozo and Tom Hagan meet somewhere with Christmas trees for sale outside.

Yep definitely a family friendly Christmas movie classic.

Can't do it.  Won't do it.  But some of my faves include:

Elf, Scrooged, White Christmas (Bing Crosby version), Its a Wonderful Life, Christmas Story, Home Alone, Christmas Vaction, and I agree with MaizeandBlueWahoo....the George C Scott version of Chirstmas Carol is the best.

Worst?  Saving Christmas (Kirk Cameron) and I'm not fond of Surviving Christmas either (Ben Affleck).

Anytime someone swears, kisses someone, or says "love" you drink. This alone will put you well on the way to black out.

Also anytime you see Mia (the girl who tries to get Snape to cheat) you scream (Insert favorite word for female of promiscuously loose morals) and drink.

Anythime you hear the old rockstar dude's song.

There are more but that should be enough to make you either not remember the end of the movie or make you drunk enough to think the ending is cute and heart warming (which it is).

I have a group of college friends across the country who i don't get to see alot. We all watch it on the same night and skype/facetime each other during. This part is probably why I love it.

1. A Christmas Story 2. Polar Express 3. It's A Wonderful Life I make it a point to watch all three every year. The worst? Too many to choose from and I have already forgotten most of them.
