OT- Any recommendations for mail order steaks?

Looking for some prime steak for the holidays. Anyone here have any suggestions for mail order companies besides Omaha Steaks and Chicago Steak Co.? TIA

Belcampo steaks are great. I order them regularly and they’re reasonably priced for grass fed and organic. Highly recommend, have amazing marbling too on the ribeyes.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would rather buy frozen steaks, regardless of quality, instead of fresh steaks. When steak freezes, ice crystals form, which rupture the meat fibers. When the steak is then thawed, the ice crystals melt and the liquid drips out of the steak. You are left with steak that will taste dyer than a fresh cut of beef. This is why fresh burgers, at say In-n-Out taste better than frozen burgers, at McDonalds.

The prime Costco steaks I've had were excellent.

I've had steaks at some good places -- Prime in Chicago; Harris's and Boulevard in SF; and around Seattle area, El Gaucho, John Howie, Daniel's Broiler, Metropolitan Grill, Ascend.

I only had Costco prime once, so I don't have a statistically significant sample, but that one time I liked it better than some of those places.

Also, the Costco prime steaks didn't cost $100/steak.

The Pine Club, a top 5 Steakhouse in America (Food Network), located in Dayton OH offers mail order steaks.  Highly recommend but, as others have said, they're not cheap.  They've been in business since 1947 and have received accolades from the New York Times, the Food Network, USA Today, Gourmet, and others.   https://thepineclub.com/

Just my opinion, my friend, and it looks like some folks here have more experience on this front than I do, but go to CostCo or your local butcher shop. Don't order online. The prices that I've seen in the past for ordering steak through the mail were absolutely absurd. Omaha Steaks had a store about 5-10 mins from our house a few years ago. We wandered in one day just to see what it was like, took one look at the prices, walked out and never went back. The store went out of business I think a year later.

We go to CostCo when we want to buy steak in bulk, and while I can say its not the absolute best cut of meat I've ever had, its close enough to where my wife and I don't care about the difference. They still have great quality, and I can get four extremely good, hefty sized NY strips for ~$50. Then I'll go to a really good butcher shop right down the road from us if we want filets or something that's a cut above CostCo. Their steaks are up there with some of the best cuts I've had, but their shop is 40-50 years old and they consistently have a line out the door to get in, so at this point they know what they're doing.

I don't doubt that the steaks you get through the mail are good, but you can get steaks just as good, or at the very least, darn close to it, without putting up an arm and a leg for them.

We haven't done a lot of steak from them yet, but we've been ordering meat from Wild Fork Foods and haven't been disappointed.  The quality seems good and the prices are more than reasonable.  The hanger steak I made last weekend was one of the best I've had.

I know from experience that Omaha steak package is not that good. The fillets are small and are even smaller after you grill them. They throw chicken that not very good and the sides and desert were not good. I would look for a gift card/certificate from a good local butcher where you can chose your cuts of meet.

I prefer Butcher Box, because I want grass-fed and grass-finished meat. Bel Campo is also good, but it's more expensive.

I've ordered from Omaha Steaks before, and the meat is fine. But it's not grass-fed.

It's not steak, but I just made some chicken thighs last night that I got from Butcher Box, and they were excellent. I put on salt, pepper, turmeric, garlic, and olive oil. Baked them for 30 minutes at 400 degrees. Yum.

I tried Omaha steaks once. Originally bought a pack for my dad for Christmas and tacked on a box for myself, just to see what the fuss was about.

Came packed in a sturdy Styrofoam box with dry ice. Everything sufficiently frozen and taken care of (in fact, packaging seemed a bit overkill as everything had its own box).

As far as size/weights; I didn't take the time to weigh each cut, but they seemed a bit small. Filets were about the size of a large scallop.

Flavor: meh. Plenty tender, but very little marbling. If prepared the same, I wouldn't have known the difference between Omaha and the cheap stuff at the grocery store. Given the price, Costco is a much better option, or go to a decent mom & pop meat shop and have them show you their prime.

THE WORST PART however, was the incessant nagging for MONTHS after the purchase. They emailed. They snail-mailed. They called, and they called, and they called. Multiple times a month, usually on Sundays, but days, nights, and in between. It was outrageous, and several kind requests to take me off their call and mail list were ineffective, so finally I had to yell at a rep, telling them they completely ruined it for me and I would NEVER buy anything from them again.

I've managed to keep that promise.

Waiting for the guru, Xtra Melanin, to weigh in!  I get that you are looking for a gift to send and don't want to get them from a store, but I will say that Busch's (in Michigan) always has really good meat and seafood.  More expensive than Kroger, but a few times a year they'll have a meat sale.  You can buy an entire New York Strip or Tenderloin and they'll cut it up and package it for you-it's a really good deal, and since I don't eat a ton of steak it lasts me 5 or 6 months.

Omaha has the best hot dogs, but their red meet portions are small, overpriced, and bland.

I'm sure there are fancy solutions as noted previously, but you're generally better off just going to your local butcher.

On a related note, we had bacon wrapped filets last night, and my wife insisted that I grill them, and of course it's pitch black now by 5, so I couldn't see, and they ended up overdone, and I just can't get over the disappointment. I dwell on the littlest things.

Hate to jump on the Costco bandwagon, but i will take a package of their beef hotdogs over virtually any other tube steak product I have ever had in my life.  Wrap two strips of bacon on them, put on the grill turning often to prevent bacon burn, slap them on a over size bolillo roll, add the cheese mayo onions, and you have  the top of the line Sonoran Hotdog.

As far as ordering meat through the mail,  my universal experience upon unwrapping the product is wait, get me my magnifying glass so I can see this so-called fillet, and Omaha SteakS (don't forget the S) is the worst transgressor in that regard.  I wait for the local grocers to have the sales on the prime cuts, and then have the butcher custom cut thicker (1 1/2-1 3/4") so they cook to my preference on the grill.  If you are one of those sick people who like steak processed into shoe leather (i.e. well) here is an industry tip from when i worked in a Prime Rib restaurant, go to the butcher department  and get as many fatbacks as they will give you off of processed rib roasts.  Pack them around either your steak or your roasting rib, and you will actually taste what a moist piece of beef tastes like.  Just trying to make your Christmas a little brighter.

Every mail order steak I've had has been disappointing. I think you're better off with going to the grocery store and getting a fresh steak. Freshness over quality in this situation imo

Then I’m assuming you only ordered from Omaha Steaks and not one of the legit online shops above. Of course if you have a good local butcher selling prime, dry aged meat, that’s the best option. But picking up a choice or select, no marbling, 1/4 inch thick ribeye from your local supermarket... no thanks. Rather just eat chicken

I forgot to mention too that if you’re in the Detroit area, Fairway packing steaks are amazing and not mail order (you can order through mail for those out of state).

They supply to local restaurants like Mabel Gray and I’ve never had a bad cut. The only downside is they are expensive as all hell, especially for Wagyu, but nice for a special occasion. Again, picking up the meat in person is preferred.

I used the Kansas City steak company for Father’s Day this year and it got great reviews. One person had previously ordered from Omaha said that it was definitely better fwiw
