OSU Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles One of Three Interviewed for Duke Head Coaching Job
What a shitty last 5 days for them. :)

As much as all of us (myself included) made fun of Knowles after 2022, they really had a great defense in 2023 so props to him. I hope he gets that Duke job.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:40 PM ^
Seth said Knowles actually called a decent game last year, but his players blew it. With more experience, and a more nuanced approach, he nearly got us this year. He's actually not that bad, so I'd love to see him leave for a job with less pressure
November 29th, 2023 at 10:49 PM ^
Sure great defense in '23, but he also called most cowardly plays when it mattered the most ie. our final 7 min drive with 8 mins left. He was specifically hired to help win the Game and turned out to be an identical version of Day,

Disagree. Keep him. I don't think he's a strength (and his long history shows him as nothing but a a slightly above-average DC, at best). His team was trying to make a stand last year "the most important drive of his career", and he tried some silly Big 12 frippery against the most intelligent center in CFB, who immediately pointed to the guy, did exactly the right counter, and Jim Knowles' most important drive ever lasted 9 seconds. That's not on Knowles' players. This year, with tons of talent, JJ McCarthy runs turned off, Knowles still gave up 30 points, including the backbreaking drive at the end which was almost better than a score. Keep the guy on third base, I say.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
That would be fantastic.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
I do think he is good but he does give off Don Brown vibes. Just seems a bit stubborn and stuck in his ways but the game constantly changes.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:29 PM ^
To me, Jim Knowles did more to change his scheme and approach in The Game in one year than Don Brown has done in his entire career. I'd be fine seeing him get a HC gig away from OSU.
November 30th, 2023 at 6:38 AM ^
How many 2nd half stops did Knowles' defenses get the last two seasons?
November 30th, 2023 at 8:06 AM ^
I don’t know about this year. But in the 2022 game, he got the ball back for Ohio State late after just one running play—and then he did it again on Michigan’s very next possession. Pretty impressive!
November 30th, 2023 at 9:11 AM ^
This, and to be fair, Coach Moore was very conservative once inside the red zone on both drives that ended in FG's in the 4th qtr.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
Well, since he's accomplished so much at OSU, he certainly deserves this opportunity.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:04 PM ^
He held us to 30 points this year. That's pretty impressive.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:05 PM ^
He is a Duke guy. Assistant there under Cutcliffe.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:01 AM ^
Good reference. makes sense.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:50 AM ^
Nice. My assumption was Diaz would be their first choice, followed by Knowles, but this would lead me to believe that he is the frontrunner.
I am in favor of some staff turnover from their best unit.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
Tony Gibson? Our old DB coach from the RichRod era? He was terrible. Or was it that Rodriguez had no idea how to recruit for defense? Regardless,I guess the guy has upped his game. A lot.
November 30th, 2023 at 3:51 PM ^
Who the hell would hire Manny Diaz as a P5 Head Coach just two years removed from being fired as head coach of Miami. Outside of the COVID year, his teams were exceedingly meh
November 29th, 2023 at 10:28 PM ^
Remember when Tony Gibson was coaching one of the worst secondaries in college football?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:32 PM ^
Hopefully sign gate keeps other teams away from our coaching staff. Blessing in disguise.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:53 PM ^
Well when everyone is hinting at “show causes” for our coaches and NCAA sanctions, I would be turned off in hiring our coaches too.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:29 AM ^
A show cause for a level 2 violation that none of the other coaches were aware of?
November 29th, 2023 at 10:33 PM ^
I have nothing to back up saying this but I just don’t see him as a head coach.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Agree, dudes with beards make shitty HC's.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:38 PM ^
I do not care for Duke.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:46 PM ^
I mean... Really? What's he done
November 29th, 2023 at 10:50 PM ^
Who cares? It's Duke football. Not exactly a plum job. Just ask the Mike Elko (who obviously couldn't wait to leave).
November 30th, 2023 at 6:53 AM ^
He's got a pretty good track record. Improved the defenses at Duke, Okie State, and OSU. Has head coaching experience at Cornell. Duke can do much worse
November 30th, 2023 at 8:42 AM ^
Ohio State’s defense was #1 in SP+ last week. They’ve been a top 5 unit pretty much all season.
That’s worth a lot
November 29th, 2023 at 10:48 PM ^
Scott flipping, Knowles interviewing….interesting day for the Buckeyes.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:50 PM ^
Saw this on r/cfb. OSU-types (Ohio and Oklahoma varieties) join a consensus that this is probably about pay and the guy doesn't have it in him to be a head coach.
On the other hand, this might be his one shot for a reasonable job to answer 'What if?'
November 29th, 2023 at 10:50 PM ^
The Grinch is having a fun day with The Ohio State.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:02 PM ^
Three excellent choices. All of them defensive oriented. Gibson is underrated.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:17 PM ^
At this point in his life (58), it's probably now or never if Knowles wants to be a first-time FBS HC. Going to Dook and being HC there with a patient fanbase may sound a lot better to him than sticking around C-bus for another year with the outrageously petulant, needy, and delusional Scarlet and Gray mob.
Also, the Bucknuts keep talking about how they'll get us next year in C-bus but what the hell are they bringing back next year that's so special? Realistically, I don't see them as a legit contender in 2024 with their current returning personnel. So once we find another fun way to beat them next year in the Shoe, he may be out looking for a new job anyway (along with Third Base).
November 29th, 2023 at 11:34 PM ^
Does he need a reference?
November 29th, 2023 at 11:39 PM ^
The triangle is a great place to live Jim
November 30th, 2023 at 1:08 AM ^
Nice insider reference. Not everybody gets that.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:50 PM ^
I couldn’t imagine having to deal with the Columbus fan base on a day to day basis. He’s a little older, but if he had young kids in school, I would take a Duke job in a heartbeat over dealing with OSU fan culture.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:00 AM ^
His daughter, Beyoncé, lives in California
November 30th, 2023 at 1:09 AM ^
I heard she may be breaking out this year as a singer. She's not bad.
November 30th, 2023 at 8:30 AM ^
Beyonce is to Michigan football what Bo Schembechler is to — well, Beyonce,
November 30th, 2023 at 3:52 AM ^
Let hope Knowles get the job because he will always get blamed for losing to 〽️ the past two years at least by Day and OSU fan base.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
After the past 3 weeks I think Knowles is a better DC than Diaz. At least against us he is
November 30th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
I'm sure after all the death threats and flaming sacks of shit he's had to extinguish on his front porch this week that he'd take the job at ivy tech if it was offered.
