The only comparable on campus scouting case I can find.

I can’t fathom how people on here are watching this unfold and not assuming we’re going to get the book thrown at us

Just like the cheeseburgers and filming workouts during COVID, I'd prefer that in readiness of the big middle finger to the NCAA our great university would hire investigators to uncover instances of this happening on other school's staffs. I mean, we all knew that analysts were coaching at other schools - but we were the only school to get that hammer. Gotta be similar situations of scouting by other schools. The premise is that Michigan is just going to sit here & take anything the NCAA doles out without as much as a simple protestation. And that bothers me to no end!

This. Let’s find all the other school’s “guys” asap. Maybe that will mitigate our punishment.

The media: "There is absolutely no precedent for this sort of thing!"

It looks to me like it is a totally gray area that is being exploited and tested… Not going to fret over ESPN and their continued attempts to blow this up. Just wait it out.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:05 PM ^
That is how I would characterize it. A clear exploit of a fuzzy area in the rules.

Good advice

Just saying it’s a gray area doesn’t make it true. It’s against the rules to send a staffer (or someone in league with him) to scout games; the same applies to videotaping opponents. What about this is gray? It might be absurd to penalize this. But it’s not gray.
October 23rd, 2023 at 11:22 PM ^
The rule has nothing to say about being “in league”. If the University isn’t paying for the results and the person scouting is not employed by university then the “gray area” is simply what is the spirit of the rule? There are 100,000 fans in the stands that could record the same info and post it to YouTube or send it to the team. How far will the NCAA push it especially seeing they wanted to get rid of the rule in December of 21?

What I can't get my head around is why we aren't out there with our story. Unless it's that we knew about the most ham-handed thing in the history of forever and backed it up, used the film to our advantage, etc., etc. Almost anything else is better than what's being spun and selectively leaked by the NCAA or made up by hack journalists out there. Whatever our ultimate narrative is going to be, it needs to be put out there soon.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:11 PM ^
For the 147th time, Michigan is not permitted to comment at all on the investigation or its purview. Not that this stops the disgusting NCAA, but Michigan's not going to do this.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:18 PM ^
The university can’t comment while the investigation is ongoing. Period.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:53 PM ^
You don’t understand PR. If Michigan really felt it could easily disprove the claims, it would do so in heartbeat, either directly or through leaks, consequences be damned. The penalty for speaking up with a valid defense would ultimately be minimal compared to the consequences they’re facing by hiding behind “the rules.” Hiding behind the “we’re not allowed to speak” thing is BS.
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
Michigan's AD kind of sucks at this kind of shoot-first PR. They could have come out during BurgerGate and affirmatively stated that there was no evidence whatsoever of Harbaugh lying to the NCAA...but they stayed silent. This AD is content to follow the rules for no reason.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:52 PM ^
I find this whole thing laughable. I don’t feel shame about it unlike other scenarios where I might really think we did something egregious. The rule was enacted not for actual ethical reasons but because other schools complained they didn’t have the dough to pay their own guy to do it. Given that Conor Stalions’ salary is around $55,000, that’s, what, like $30,000 in 1994 dollars? This is as ridiculous as the cream cheese rule. Fine, take away wins. Exert your considerable and completely inane power, NCAA. Remember you did that to us for excessive stretching? The morally superior NCAA.

Why not have a grad asst or two also hold up signs, and that way the players only know who to look at, and even change who to look at a few times during game.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
anyone who attends an NCAA football game needs to record at least enough of the sidelines to get a couple play calls and upload them to youtube.... doesn't matter what team.... just flood the internet with playcalls.

Instead of a maize out, it’s an iPhone out.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:21 PM ^
This is actually a good idea. Flood Youtube with these videos and show how absurd this is. This is easily obtainable video, requiring no special equipment other than what every single person has on them at all times.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
That was for going to 1 game, not 30+, though.
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:27 PM ^
What if we went to zero games?
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:02 PM ^
The way these things work is that every new leak leads to people dismissing it with some loophole. Then the next leak comes out demolishing those loopholes. And on and on.
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:29 PM ^
Kansas did this for 6 years. Lousiville vacated the championship after players had retired from the nba. Arizona took years. Take all the time in the world.

I'm sure this was asked or discussed in some thread but honest question: if a random Michigan fan in Big Ten country filmed the sidelines of potential opponents and then emailed it to a coach or someone connected to the program or posted on YouTube, what is a coach's obligation upon opening that email or clicking a link? Are they required to report that to compliance or would it be fair game to view and use as they see fit?

There’s a paper trail.
This dude is an idiot and about as subtle as a dump truck.
It looks to be very likely that we have been doing exactly what we are accused of.
As far as penalties, it’s the NCAA and we are Michigan so it will be as bad as they can make it.
I do think everyone at a certain level does this, but I’m shocked by the irresponsible reporting and pearl-clutching.
