Notable head coaching records through 31 games

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on
I’m sure this has been discussed somewhere on the blog, but I thought it warranted emphasis. Through their first 31 games as head coach at their schools: Urban Meyer: 28-3 Nick Saban 23-8 Brian Kelly 21-10 Dabo Swinney 18-13 James Franklin 17-14 Where does Jim Harbaugh fit? 24-7, good for second on the list. I’ve seen and heard a lot of negativity from our fan base over the season. First, we were winning but not by large enough margins. Then it was bad qb play and play calling (understandable to an extent). Now it’s turned to none other than Harbaugh himself. Can he really develop talent? Etc etc. I say all that to say this, there is no other head coach in America more equipped to be our head coach than Jim Harbaugh. Yeah our team may have some holes right now, but they are being addressed via recruiting and coaching. We’re also one of the youngest teams in the nation. I mean, based on all the bitching I’ve seen you’d think people thought we would be undefeated this year. We knew this year was going to have its ups and downs. So let’s not lose our minds and act like the sky is falling. Regardless of how this year turns out, the future is as bright as its ever been in Ann Arbor. Keep calm and GO BLUE!

No flame, but what part about the program has drastically changed over Harbaughs time here so far? We're 1-4 in that time span against our rivals, with our lone win coming against the worst MSU team in the last 10 years. Rivalry games and Championships are how coaches are judged at UM.

Dude we had back to back 10 win seasons for the first time since 03-04. Fact is the rest of the B1G caught to where Michigan was pre-2008, and it will take a lot of work to get back on top. It doesn't help that the 2 best programs in the conference over the last 10 years have beating Michigan as part of their mission statement.

Exactly. Minnesota had the game in the bag if not for the horrendous coaching of Clays in his first ever game as a head coach. To this date, it remains one of the worst examples of clock management I've ever seen. Not a good omen when the fans at TCF were calling for his head after clock reached 0:00.

I’ve seen this “coaching record through __ games” bullshit so much now. It’s stupid and frankly sounds like it was thought up by Harbaugh haters. Hate seeing people try to discredit Harbaugh’s success over the years. (Edit: Not saying OP is hating on Harbaugh)

Does his career trajectory compare favorably to other coaches in his income stratosphere? That's not a rhetorical question - I haven't researched that. It seems to me that, considering his salary, he should have at least participated in a national title game by now though

You aren’t paying his salary. Obviously his current contract is based upon previous accomplishments, you know, turning cellar dwellers into winners at 2 different schools. Oh yeah, that and taking quite possibly, the most disfunctional NFL franchise (outside of Cleveland ;) #JK mgrowold) to a super bowl. Look at the 49ers before and after Harbaugh. Now tell me how he doesn’t earn his money?

Quit your bitching and go back to Mlive or RCMB or whatever hole you crawled out of. I grow tired of the complaining.

For every poster here that says they are tired of complaining, tired of this, that, and the other thing... guess what? It’s a fan board. It’s filled with hot takes. Poor rationale. Emotional responses. Always has been, always will be. Feel free to go and spend your time doing other stuff. Figured it was time to finally let you know that you have choices in life.

Thanks. Here I thought my fandom required me to read every comment. I come here to talk Michigan football, catch up on recruiting, and hear Brian’s thoughts because I, you know, like those things. I get it’s not gonna be all roses and sunshine, but at a certain point the bitching and moaning gets to be a little much.

Here’s a thought exercise for any of you that think Harbaugh makes too much or is underperforming or whatever thin ass narrative you are spinning, currently. Give me one coach, just one, you think will take less money, recruit better, win more, and dominate our rivals, and will make the fan base and AD even more united than Jim Harbaugh? Just fucking one. I’ll hang up and listen

(Spoiler alert, there isn’t one, no such person exists, if you aren’t happy with him, you will never be satisfied with anyone)

You don’t get a coach with Harbaugh’s track record from the NFL ranks without this type of contract. There was not, and there remains, no possible better man for the job than Harbaugh.

The offense is NOT young..Left tackle-Senior, Center-Senior, Right Tackle-Junior, Running Backs-Senior, Junior, Soph Fullback-Senior and Senior. QB-Senior. Slot-Junior.

Can't use the youth excuse of the abysmal offense

Come on man. The tackle junior tackle you mentioned just took the spot of a sophomore. The two guards are sophomore s. The wrs that contribute are largely true sophomore and freshman and Perry a Jr. The 2 biggest contributing to are redshirt freshman and sophomore, with Wheatley getting healthy. They have young inexperienced players all over the field.

When talking about youth on offense, it’s silly to only look at a starter and declare them old. The two deep is littered with freshmen and sophomores. That’s what people are talking about when they say we are super young. The fact that we have exactly enough juniors and seniors on the team total to field a starting team (24 is it!) says volumes about Hokes recruiting classes. Depth matters yo

How many of them have ever started before?  Or even had significant playing time?  The FB's and slot reciever (Perry).  There are some serviceable parts on the OL - Cole is good, but out of position; Bredeson is still gaining experience.  The others have been around for a while without pushing for PT.  Your argument is a stretch...

When was the last time Michigan pulled a huge upset? Probably over ND in 2006. Been way too long and I don’t see that changing on Saturday. I had predicted 8-4 this season but that loss to MSU was a complete embarrassment. But I am sure 2019 will totally be the year!

Of the 7 losses all but one or two have essentially come down to the last play of the game. Harbaugh has one a few on the last play as well, but more often than not the luck has gone the wrong way. But it's just that. Luck. People who are complaining about Harbaugh after 2.5 years need to have their heads examined. This shit is the worst thing about the Michigan fan base. All the bitching about Carr year after year. Those people finally got what they wanted (and deserved) with Rodriguez and Hoke. Now we have one of the best coaches in the country and the same malcontents who can find no personal worth in their lives unless their favorite sports team wins the national championship every year come out of the woodwork. God I hate the internet.

Except maybe you but I am sure you're just full of shit. Is that why you joined the blog5 days ago? To really talk about Harbaugh's money. All of these coaches make a shit ton and UofM is a money machine. Fans just want to win.

You know what though? There are only 2 losses in Harbaugh's tenure where I think we were the worse team. Those are Utah (more talented but not at the point where we could go on the road and play a really good on the road week 1 and expect to win) and OSU in 2015. We had no business losing to Iowa, FSU, and MSU 2x. OSU last year was an even matchup and came down to 6 inches. In saying that though, this program was in a downward spiral when he inherited it. Our future QB was Shane Morris. Smith was far from a feature back. Darboh and Chesson showed minimal flashes. Butt was solid but that was about it along with Glasgow and Cole when it comes fo O. On defense, Taco seemed like a spot player. The only studs on D were Peppers and Lewis. Now we have depth on D that looks like the next 3 years at least we will be elite. There is not a doubt in my mind DPJ and Black will be a nightmare for defensive backs. We need a QB still and the line to develop. Chuck and Ruiz hopefully will be great. It is a process. We were spoiled year 1 where he and his staff were able to maximize the potential Home squandered. We had bad recruiting for 3 years let's not forget that. 18 and beyond are years we need to expect B1G championship contention. Let's evaluate his job then. For the record I feel we win Saturday and in Madison and have a chance to win the east vs OSU

Dafuq???

In what world did FSU out play us?  Did you not notice that the big first quarter they had may have been due to having lost Peppers just before the game - with no time to prepare a different game plan?  Did you not notice that All-American, Mackey Award winning Jake Butt blew out his knee in the first quarter?  Did you not notice that Michigan fought off that first quarter after adjusting to the makeshift alternate defensive plan (with a redshirt freshman replacing Peppers)? Did you not notice that the offense adjusted itself after losing Butt, and fought its way back into the game?  Did you not notice the lead Michigan took with 3 minutes left?  Did you not notice that the loss came in the last 90 seconds of the game?

How is that being outplayed?  What the fuck world do you live in?

Except for the actual LEAD Michigan had late in the 4th quarter.  That game was a win, save for a blown kickoff coverage.

My gawd, some people will stop at nothing to complain about something.  This guy thinks losing a Hiesman finalist a few minutes before the kick had no effect on the team.  Whatever...
