Next up at OC??? Weiss, Hart or an outsider?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on February 6th, 2022 at 10:57 AM

Alright, next up. One could make the argument this had something to do with rumblings that Gattis wouldn’t be the pick if Harbaugh left and we hired internally. If that’s the case and this is an internal hire, is it safe to say the next OC is the head coach in waiting?  What are the thoughts here?  Some are saying Weiss. Some say Mike Hart. Do you look at Nick Sheridan at Indiana? Perhaps an outsider? What’s your vote?

An outsider name that should get some serious consideration is Andy Ludwig from Utah; guy with a very good track record in two P5 conferences.

Can we please not promote Weiss. The guy has 0 experience with the majority of responsibilities that OCs have. If you want to have Hart and Sherrone Moore Co-OC, that would be more than fine.

Wasn't Mike Hart the running game coordinator this past year? He's also previously been an "associate head coach" which had to entail some amount of greater responsibility than just coaching the RB room.

And of course Sherrone Moore was the Co-OC this past year and so he has a full year's worth of game plan preparation and potentially some play calling under his belt.

Sam already put it out there, so take this for what it’s worth but I’ve heard Weiss will be promoted. Hart, straight from his own mouth, doesn’t mind that Weiss is being promoted and would be happy for him. People saying Hart would leave over this are crazy. Hart is already the associate/assistant head coach. Moore/Weiss will be co-coordinators with Weiss doing most of the play calling. Hart says Weiss had a lot more to do with game planning than people realize.

Ron would be moved to WR coach and the new defensive coordinator will be able to hire at least one of his own guys to essentially replace Ron and possibly a second one depending on what happens with another current defensive coach.

My personal opinion about Sam saying this is ONE of the moves that is happening is just him selling subscriptions. Which I have no problem with. This is a very slow time for them now that signing day is over. There of course has to be a few moves now to replace the OC and DC. But the way this is worded sounds like there is about to be a mass exodus which just isn’t the case. Michigan obviously needs an OC and DC but they probably already have OC on staff. Which means they also would need a WR coach but they probably already have that on staff. Which means they need a DC and defensive coach. Possibly could lose a defensive coach so they’d need a DC and two defensive coaches. Which is good for a DC because they like to bring at least a few of their own guys.

So yeah there will be a little shuffling and some hiring but that makes it seem like some mass exodus. Again it’s a way to sell subscriptions which is perfectly fine. But people here are now acting crazy over this.

Can we please get off of the “ties to Michigan” theme. Nothing about Nick Sheridan’s offense last season screams “next in line to be Michigan’s OC” See if Joe Brady wants to upgrade from and NFL position coach to be a top college OC.

Also pretty sure this means Bellamy will be coaching WR’s next season.

Matt Weiss doesn't even want to be in college. I wouldn't make him the OC because he is out the moment an NFL job opens for him. Michigan better be careful that they don't lose Sherrone Moore.

Who cares about 2023, tbh. Promote whoever gives M best chance to beat OSU in 2022 then worth about 2023… in 2023. The days of continuity concerning to rosters and coaches are long gone. Prepare the analytics and money cannons!

Any chance that he is jumping ship knowing Harbaugh will be leaving ?  Hasn't signed contract yet ad Minnesota job still open.  Absent of that, this makes little sense.  Unless Gattis wants full autonomy and has been sharing with Moore/Weiss/Harbaugh.
