Since the new renovation do you frequent Mgoblog less?

Submitted by chad on

I dont know about everyone else but with the new mgoblog site (change and not mobile friendly) do you find yourself frequenting the page less? I know I use to come here everyday numerous times. Now its maybe once or twice a week.

*Could also be slow slow summer months for Michigan sports as well.

I actually have been on here less frequently and I am a mod, but to be fair, the real indicator will be next month when we start getting camp news. If that goes as slowly as it is right now - and July is a slow sports month anyway save for baseball - that will be very interesting indeed.

A lot less, even factoring in the usual summer doldrums. It's probably just me, but I find it tedious to follow comments and other members responses thereto. Nowhere near as user-friendly as the old blog.

Yes, but more because of the recent content. I'll leave it at that. Still the best place for Michigan stuff on the internet though.

Slightly less. I check it less at work but that could be because of the current workload but the biggest thing is without the app I don't check it on my phone even though I have the shortcut.

Less frequently, less time on the site.  Part of that is due to the fewer board posts, but I think that can be attributed, in part, to the new design as well.

For example, I can fill my laptop screen with a single, one-word response (posted by one of our favorite posters) in this thread.  (I'm on a PC, and use Android on phone.)  I recognize that designing and implementing a website is very hard, that there was a ton of content to migrate, etc., but a message board with such a layout is significantly less enjoyable to read.

LSA2000 shared a link to web traffic for MGoBlog years ago. That link doesn't work any more but I'm sure it would be pretty easy to check month/month and year/year traffic on the site.

Yes. For me, it’s too inconvenient to find my comments again to see if anyone replied. So I don’t bother. I don’t think I have had a “blog conversation” consisting of more than one reply (or any back and forth) since the new site launched. That’s unfortunate because that give and take was one of the things I liked about the blog. XM and I would never have developed our friendly rivalry between SoCal and whatever barren wasteland he lives in under the present format.

I agree. Following conversations is way to difficult. I don’t get the different color lines. Way less board traffic makes this site much less enjoyable.

I visit other sites more now where in the past I would only visit this one for Michigan sports.

Oh well, it is what it is. Maybe 4.0 will be better.

and in the old format, i could put a picture here of our crops/livestock, and make fun of ST3 living in a coastal desert with 20 million too many people.  when the zombie apocalypse happens, he'll be pining for the safety of up north, but running for his life as 20 million california zombies pursue him and his lovely family (please use some of this to chase the 4-5* california recruits to michigan).  but now, you'll just have to imagine it...

See, it took me 2 days to find this comment again. It’s impossible to have conversations anymore.

P.S. Forget the zombies, when the big one comes me and my brood are all going to be shark food. Recruits, do not become shark food. Go to shark-free Michigan.

Visiting somewhat less frequently (very possibly due to light summer content) and dramatically less time per visit.

Once football season gets closer I assume I'll be spending more time per visit.

About the same,  just don’t like it as much as the app, that doesn’t deter me from reading posts about meaningless stuff instead of working.

Way, way, way less.

But if the changes Seth posted today in the sticky thread actually happen (I told him they should bump those to front page) that will prolly change as well.

They are fixing most of the issues we are having.  It's good news!

i'm with timmaay.  been trying to get involved, motivated solely by seth's comments about fixes, but be serious, the new blog is meadow muffins.  it never should've been rolled out.  and i can imagine a huge, h-u-g-e drop in visits, page landings, etc. b/c of it.  i easily stayed away for over a month with a handful of posts.

I still frequent the site a lot, but the older product was a lot better.  This change didn't really improve my experience but cheapened it.  The contest is still solid, just different.

I'd really love it if someone took a look at front page posting rates for July over the last few years. It seems as if this year is slower than normal. Brian's posts about the freshmen seem to be trickling out extremely slowly. I know Ace is probably posting a lower rate for very good reasons, so that isn't helping. And I'm not sold on the new guy yet. I tried to make it through his Teske post, and I just couldn't. The combination of the formatting and the awful white background just made it a pain to try to slog through.

Who knows, it might just be my imagination because I'm desperate for something to read aside from the news.

The better question is whether or not the new site will help mgoblog grow.  Most of us are already used to coming here and the DNA is somewhat intact but for new minds and people, I don't think it will.

This site helped many of us survive the rough seasons.

I come here less because the board is such a pain to use. I’d guess non-board visitors probably haven’t changed their habits much and, if anything, visit more on mobile

Think the overall design is fine and better for mobile but don’t understand how the hell this was a year+ project when it looks and behaves like someone just spent a handful of hours in Wordpress.

Yes. Especially on mobile. The stickying an old story to the top of the main page thing might make more sense once we are in the season and there’s game recaps/previews but for now it’s counter-intuitive.

Would never use this web design company.

I come here as I normally did. I like some changes. The content has not changed, which is all that matters.

I still wish they implemented a quote reply feature, though, because the indented replies are as ridiculous as they were in the previous version of the blog.

I visit much less for a few reasons in no particular order:

1. The app was easier - see it and hit the button, this site I forget about.

2. Far less board content I care about - I leave threads fast as they devolve to complaining about the recruits we are getting or complaining about those complaining (irony that I’m on here possibly complaining about it?)

3. Far less front page content and more content I don’t care about - NBA, USMNT, World Cup stuff, hockey, I have no interest or patience to read any of that or listen to any podcast titled, “Not Just a Shooter”. Hoping for no Draftgeddon this year.

No, I come here just about as often.

But I do feel that the board is less active and interesting.

Yup, I'm on here much less (and I never used the app, so the lack of one makes no difference to me). I understand that Drupal had the life expectancy of a grandpa on Logan's Run, but the new site is both charmless and wonky, a pretty poor combo. Launching the update in the slow summer makes sense, but only if you use that time to actually go bug hunting. The fact that I still we're one month in and I still can't vote makes me feel like an unwanted outsider. More frequent updates would help mitigate the general grumbling/ennui. The CFB Risk guys managed to put out a daily briefing for two months straight, so it ain't that hard to give a heads up.

Sorry you feel that way.  If it makes you feel any better I can vote and I too feel like an "unwanted outsider" just like you.  The almost complete dearth of any communication from the leadership on what's going on (except for Seth) when it's painfully obvious people do not like this at all makes me think Huel has convinced MGoLeadership that us sheeple are just too unrefined to realize how great this new site is and too patient cause we're all going to come to LOVE IT.

No, but the extra steps to get to the board really sucks. Also every time I hit my quick link on Chrome for my phone it opens a new tab. I'm up to 24 mgoblog tabs in the last week because I'm just too lazy to close them.
