this board is trending towards 11W territory as far as people dishing out negs for simply disagreeing with a post, rather than saving them for people who are being uncivil or discussing things dishonestly/in bad faith.

If OP's post was not based in anything resembling fact, negging the post would be appropriate.

Negging the post for simply not liking what OP is saying is a mis-use of the feature, imo.

This. And then, when asked for a source, he started with "there if you know where to look" and "the edge of internet" instead of just admitting that it's Sam Webb and providing a link. The post is phrased as if Hurtt is the sole candidate when a number of potential DCs are being looked at. And, frankly, the OP was basically meant as another (indirect) criticism of Sherrone Moore's hiring because Sal thought there should've been a coaching search.

I say all this as someone who has defended Sal in the past. I actually agree that Hurtt would not be the most inspirational hire, since I'd also love to keep the amoeba defense going.

He was a great recruiter before he went to the NFL. He was a bad DC. I'd take him as a position coach but hope he isn't hired as DC.

I do not foresee any DC hire that makes everyone happy. Also, coaching is one of the weird professions where past failures or even unimpressive runs don't always mean the coach sucks. Pete Carroll sucked in the NFL his first, and second go arounds. Belichick sucked in Cleveland (regardless of how great Brady was Belichick does deserve credit for NE). Saban sucked at MSU. The list goes on.

Regardless, I know one thing, no matter who Moore hires half the board will complain about it.

Promote from within and there'll be bitching about lack of experience running the whole D and calling plays.

Hire from outside and there'll be bitching about "they don't know the system, they're gonna change it all and start from scratch."

There are risks either way. Only time will tell. For now I prefer to give Moore the benefit of the doubt as he fills out his staff. If we all know how important it is to maintain continuity I'm sure he does too. I'm sure he also realizes that the D is likely gonna carry this team next year, so I'd imagine he understands that his DC hire is probably a lot more important than his OC hire.

If Harbaugh vouched for this guy as our next HC, then let's give him the benefit of the doubt until he fucks it up. And then even if he does, let's give him a chance to right the ship. After the 2020 season many would have been fine firing Harbaugh (myself included). But Warde (of all people) gave him a chance to right the ship and the last three years have been epic.

Personally, I will wait until after the 2024 season to determine whether it was a good hire or not. But to criticize potential hires based on #sources is just a waste of everyone's time. At least wait until a hire is made to bitch about it.

Saban beat a #1 osu while at msu. He did well enough to get the lsu job. He did not suck at msu.

Anyway, giving Moore the benefit of the doubt "until he fucks it up", then giving more time isn't a parallel to harbaugh, it's more of a parallel to Howard. Harbaugh had proven himself well before 2020.

Nothing wrong with being critical of a who dat hire that was on nobody's short list. I'll put it this way, I doubt UM is getting into a bidding war with anyone for this guy as DC.

You didn't know who Mike Macdonald was before he was hired. It went very well.

You didn't know who Jesse Minter was before he was hired. It went historically well.

Trust the people making the decisions — unless they hire Matt Patricia.

Harbaugh had been a HC for decades. Let's see how well this trust him approach works when our D slides from top 3 to top 40 and we lose 3-4 games a year (and make no mistake, we are winning with our D, not our O). Then Moore makes a change after 3 years when we are 5th in the b1g.

You may not know when someone is a great hire, but it's pretty obvious when they are a bad hire. With our personnel, we should have a choice of top flight d coords, not...this guy.

Looking over Hurtt's work in Seattle its tough to be impressed. Seahawk D took a tumble the moment Hurtt took over. Some of the issues definitely can be laid at the front office. If Bobby Wagner is your leading tackler at age 33 that's on the GM.

Rush D really nosedived the last 2 years. Got to be careful judging this though. A lot of the better NFL D's in recent years have placed fewer defenders in the box, preferring to lean against the pass game. Frisco is an excellent example of this in 2023.

This is why I like to look at short yardage run D, where typically box defender count goes up. And Seattle has given up plenty of short yardage run TDs this past season.

There has really been very little in the way of believable information or even rumors regarding any of Moore’s upcoming staff hires. It seems to me that people are kinda throwing stuff out there without any real evidence of anything and then claiming there’s a fire while they’ve been the ones making the smoke to begin with. I love listening to Sam, and he has seemed to be plugged in at some level to the program, but I don’t think even he has a clue right now as to who Moore and Michigan might be going after. Heck, it’s only just now coming up on 48 hours or so since Moore was announced as HC.
