Michigan reaches out to transfer portal PG
Sounds like a player similar to Chaundee, looking for the culture and winning.
He can flat out score.
Would be similar to Mike Smith ONLY in that they would ask him to take on more of a PG-mentality attitude.
He's a couple inches taller, which at the PG spot, makes a huge difference. But more importantly, he's just a much stronger kid. I loved Mikey for what he did, but we all knew he couldn't really do much in the way of preventing someone from shooting over him. Jones definitely would be much harder to push around.
Also a hell of a rebounder for someone his size. I would take him all day.
As a pg, he'll need a left hand in the B1G.
7.2 RPG is impressive for a 6'1" guy and he can score too.
On one hand, he looks good.
On the other hand, the competition doesn't look good.
On the third hand, trust in Juwan.
If they are looking for a PG, why not keep Smith? Unless it was Smiths choice to leave ?
It was Smith's choice to leave.
It sounds like keeping Smith was our primary option and it was his choice to move on.
Is he really a PG who can run the show or more of a combo guard?
Played PG his first two years. Moved to SG as primary scorer last year.
Looks like a perfect fit to help man the point (until Frankie emerges), and also gives us an on-ball scorer who can create his own shots.

He's exactly what we need...a guy that can go get a bucket.
Brooks isn't that guy.
Houstan is a pro player, but I think he's more of a drive and kick guy and then he makes you pay.
Johns isn't doing it and Dickinson is Dickinson.
We absolutely need this kid if we're going to have realistic hopes for a final four.
Especially because you can play him and Brooks, him and Jackson and him and Collins together.
Assuming he can defend at a reasonable level, we need to send the house at this kid.
We had nobody who could do that last year and only missed final four due to extremely anomalous shooting luck plus a very important injury. I'd much rather have good offensive sets than someone who wastes possessions doing heroball. The need for a guy who can get a bucket is way overstated.
The need for a guy to be able to go get a bucket on his own is an invaluable asset when you have a unit coached as well as Michigan-it is simply another tool in the box. There is nothing in Jones' film that says he is a "heroball" guy. He scores exceptionally well at all three levels, he passes, he rebounds and he defends. What the hell more do you ask of a player??? His IQ, alongside Brooks, makes for an incredibly high floor for this team and catalyses the transfer of good play to that scintillating incoming class. I fully expect that Juwan has made an excellent decision should Mr. Jones land among the Maize and Blue.
Oh I like the idea of getting this player, what I disagree with is this:
He's exactly what we need...a guy that can go get a bucket....
We absolutely need this kid if we're going to have realistic hopes for a final four.
Want him
He would be a good add I think.
Looks like his assist percentage dipped from 33% last year to 19% this year. Gotta think that has more to do with the team around him then the player passing the ball. His best teammate had an O-Rating of 107, which would have been 9th best on the team for Michigan.
In Juwan I Trust.
Sounds like a player similar to Chaundee,
Did you mean Mike Smith?
It could be either really. Both were willing to accept lesser roles to play for a winning team.
I'm still all in on trying to get Carr, but I'm fine with Jones as an alternative option
Why have one when you can have both?
Because you cannot have both. We have one scholarship if Franz leaves. Unless there is a possibility of Jace's being used. But you would not want two more guards even if there were enough scholarships.
He played off the ball more this past season compared to years prior. Probably explains the dip in his assist rate
Hopefully this is a plan C or even D option.
Let me guess, you probably think we will get Jalen Suggs to transfer here, right?
I say Plan C or D because this kid lacks athleticism big time. Those step backs in that clip that create separation aren’t going to cut it in high major play.
If we take him, so be it, it means he’s the best out there available to us. I trust Juwan on that. I just hope we are after a couple other higher end athletes.
We need a shot creator in late shot clock situations in the worst way. This kid is not that.
7 rpg at 6’1? I don’t care what league you are in, you gotta be a dog to do that. Perhaps a smaller Jai’Sean Tate?
Thank god he graduates in may. no way our stick-up-the-ass, shitty, snobby, no-credit-recognizing credit transfer rules allow someone from Coastal Carolina to transfer as an undergrad.
Right. Shocked they let a guy from Columbia in.
Personal brag point, my final two for grad school was Michigan and Columbia and I like Mike Smith made the right choice
+1 THIS is the understatement post of the week...maybe even the month.
Get him....NOW. If it happens, might as well put us in the top 5 right now.

That would mean he'll make Michigan worse since they are already ranked # 1 by several sources.
The '21 recruiting class is ranked #1 but most "Too Early to Tell" polls for next year's team have them in the #10 range. Not that I give a damn about these polls but DeVante Jones would like move the good guys into the #5 or better range. He certainly would answer a lot of questions about next year's team.
Among others:
Early top-25 basketball rankings for 2021-22: Michigan, Gonzaga on top (mercurynews.com)
College basketball rankings: Early top 25 for 2021-22 - Sports Illustrated
Of course, there are other opinions but there are others who already have Michigan in the top 5.
This is the way. If not Carr, let's get him.

There is a pretty cool tool on BartTorvik where you can add a transfer to the projected team for next year.
If you add Devante Jones he increases our preseason rank from 5 to 3 and helps both the offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency.

This is awesome, thanks!
Might be worth its own post, especially if you also do Carr and/or some other possible targets
Curious how others like Jacob young or jalen pinkett would impact us.

So I used the tool for the three you guys mentioned
Marcus Carr is similar to Davante Jones which I found interesting...

Interesting tool but I would question the accuracy of how you project efficiency numbers for a team that will be heavily relying upon freshmen that have never played college basketball.

Not to jinx it, but why would this guy go anywhere else? “Hi, this is Juwan Howard...”
April 21st, 2021 at 12:37 AM ^
Only if someone wanted to come here to be the guy. The beauty of Mike and Chaundee is they changed their games to fit the team's needs (novel observation, right?). Chaundee is an especially interesting case because his diminished role raised his draft stock, which is wild. Maybe we can get Carr if we can convince him that taking a lesser role (probably still starting) could get him a bigger check in the next draft?
