Michigan Not Among Joe Moore Award Finalists

Submitted by jbDutch on December 6th, 2023 at 3:53 PM

Goergia, LSU, Oregon and Washington are the finalists this year.  Not too surprising I guess.  I wasn't expecting to win this year, but still thought they might make Michigan a finalist.

Yeah. We really struggled in both pass pro and on the ground. Blake’s numbers highlight that. I still don’t know what the deal is with The Don.

I’m actually more concerned about the o-line than any other unit going into the playoffs

The preseason prediction that we would not win the Joe Moore award because they wouldn't give it to someone 3x in a row was correct, but directionally incorrect

Not a surprise they aren't going to win but also not the biggest concern in the world.  It's been an okay offensive line year but considering only one of those 4 teams is playing for a title (and the one, Washington, has the lowest odds of winning said title) I'll take missing this list if it improves UM's chances of taking home bigger hardware.

Even if they were really good this year, there was almost no way they were going to win it a third year in a row. They would've had to be so absurdly dominant that it truly didn't make any sense to give it to anyone else.

The OL was good this year, but it definitely took a step back from where it was.

so here's a question - is there a similar award for defensive lines?  i'd never heard of the joe moore award until we won it, maybe that's why i'd not heard of a defensive line version...

like i said, what i’m asking is if there’s an award for the best defensive line unit.

i know about the joe moore award, and i know the idea behind it.  but (also like i said) i don’t recall it being a major thing around these parts until we won it, although that might’ve be due to my own general disinterest in awards when we don’t win them. it’s only been around since 2015, in any case.

Makes sense.  They are a good not great O-line, definitely a step down from the last couple years.

Hopefully lights a fire under their ass to be great for the last 2 games of the season.

Based on run game performance this year, i wouldn't have expected them to be.  Pass protection was generally pretty good, but fell of at the end of the year.

I don't have any opinion on the finalists, but I agree that Michigan doesn't deserve to be among them this year. The running game has been extremely inconsistent all year, and we've seen pass protection issues against teams with competent edge rushers like Purdue and PSU. I don't know what the cause is, but the results aren't Joe Moore-worthy.

You can watch the highlights from 2021 and 2022 osu games and our O lines just plow through the opposition opening huge holes. Didnt see much like that this year

I honestly do not think many are surprised by this.  The OL is still good, not elite like it had been the previous 2 years. A couple of guys set the unit back.

It was a heck of a run, but figured they wouldn't make it 3 straight. Not sure why they weren't as good this year as the past two with so much returning and such a weak B1G.

They may not've won the Joe Moore again, but that second half against Penn State and the remainder of The Game after Zinter went down are going to stay with me. We absolutely needed them to come through and kill games and they did.

Somewhere along the lines the narrative became “we couldn’t throw against Penn State”, when in reality, we just realized that we could lean on our big boys up front and move the chains with consistency. Penn State knew exactly what we were going to do every play in the second half, and there wasn’t a damn thing they could do about. That’s a sign of an absolutely incredible line.
