Michigan has sent its response to the Big Ten
November 8th, 2023 at 5:16 PM ^
I wonder if part of the response is stuff from 'the folder' about how OSU has been doing in person scouting and filming of practices for the last 5 years at least. How OSU has been paying players to take visits (just like their guy admitted in congress? I'm fuzzy on the details there).
November 8th, 2023 at 5:19 PM ^
I have a feeling that, if Pettitti backs down, M will keep it in the folder for another day.
If he announces a suspension, I'm sure that a bunch of in-person scouting is going to be leaked about OSU, and some dirty laundry about other Big Ten schools as well.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:18 PM ^
The whole thing is just done, right?
I mean, if there is roughly the same level of "proof" that some substantial number of big 10 schools have been doing things at least as "bad" as Michigan, the NCAA is not going to start handing out show causes like Halloween candy. At some point very soon, the logic that "this is college football", which has been said by many block M people for weeks, will become unassailably and 100% true. Or maybe we're there. There are people who have a dog in this fight, and people that don't, and we're at or past the tipping point where you really need to have a dog to want to continue to say "Michigan is some specially awful place where all the bad things happen".
The fact that the "proof" exists that other schools have been MORE clearly in violation of the "rules" than Michigan seems to only make the above belief stronger.
So I'd like to voice an opinion - I kinda like college football, and would like to just go back to playing football games. No people with horse themed names. No idiotic efforts to win the whole thing by undermining your rival in every other way than ..you know...football ways. Could we NOT leave the "Big 10"? Not freak out anymore after this thing dies? Just play football and enjoy it because it's awesome. </done>

I'd love to put the genie back in the bottle and go back to just watching football. But too many people in the administration will not forget the way a majority of members pushed to derail a championship-potential season by gaslighting. And in the era of realignment, I don't think this will ever go away - we probably stay in the big ten, but i've never been more sure that the 18 team big ten is temporary. There is nothing that binds Michigan to Rutgers or Purdue, not anymore.
I'm sorry.

"no people with horse-themed names"
Does this mean we can no longer refer to John Elway as "Mister Ed"?

It's clear one of us is more visually oriented. :)
November 8th, 2023 at 5:31 PM ^
It’s too late for that. If Pettiti had simply listened to the other ads and coaches, and then told them to go sit in a corner and think about what they’ve done, and waited for the NCAA, then maybe.

Damn, first time reading actual comments on twitter, that didn’t feel healthy, will not repeat…

In response to the Big Ten's Notice of Potential to Administer a Punishment, the University of Michigan is providing the following statement:
"Go fuck yourself
Love,
Santa"
November 8th, 2023 at 7:10 PM ^
From Tom Hanks in Catch Me If You Can, "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Fuck you."

At some point, Dear Leader Tony P is going to realize that he's been gaslit. And, I suspect if he's not some incredible dummy, he will be mad. And, as such, all will turn out fine for U of M.
November 8th, 2023 at 7:10 PM ^
With all respect to your prediction, I expect that what he does is going to depend on what his employers -- the other 13 Big Ten members -- want him to do.
November 8th, 2023 at 11:27 PM ^
But really, 3 sorta lord over everyone else, with a 4th of some import. Maybe a few years ago Wiscy would've been 5th.
M has leaked some damaging things but they haven't really used their leverage yet. I don't want them to, I think they've made s compelling case on the merits. But we shall see.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:35 PM ^
To me, this is starting to feel like the Sopranos episode where Matt Bevilaqua gets clipped and the jogger heard the shots and saw him get carried away. Guy was hellbent on justice, until he found out who he was messing with.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:44 PM ^
To me, this is like one of the Washington DC spy thrillers where our naive protagonist (Petitti) is minding his own business, jogging in the park or something, when a mysterious guy in a trench coat gets his attention and wants to have a chat with him. It starts as small talk, how's the weather type stuff, but then he slips out some personal info he shouldn't know. Then he starts explaining the world to Pettiti. How actions have consequences. How there's a very big file of dirt that is just waiting to be released to the media. Pettiti just stares at the old guy with his mouth agape as he slowly realizes the huge mistakes he's made. He asks who the hell are you? And it turns out to be the CEO of Fox or one of his lackeys.

With Thamel being so quiet, maybe he's in trouble with ESPN or the law for his reckless 'reporting'.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:53 PM ^
Agreed, but he'll be fine. He's completely in line with ESPN's journalistic rules.
November 8th, 2023 at 7:12 PM ^
You meant ESPN's anti-journalistic rules, don't you?
November 8th, 2023 at 7:42 PM ^
Or his bosses at ESPN simply told him to shut up.
A little more rumor here, but I've heard that Ono approached ESPN and told them if they didn't lay off the negative reporting he was going to deny them campus access for College Game Day.
At this point I believe it could be true, and I'm fine with that.

Went to start a new thread but accidentally closed tab. Might not have been worth it anyways, so here we go:
Isaiah Hole suggests M would absolutely leave the B1G, saying that there's substantial feeling that the members of the conference are plotting towards M's downfall, and that the B1G is contributing when it should be fighting FOR Michigan at this point.
Also that the incoming CBS Sports president is an M grad and avid fan.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:49 PM ^
Amen to that! Let’s abandon these fucking assholes and go to the ACC.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:53 PM ^
Michigan joining the ACC works for me.
November 8th, 2023 at 6:00 PM ^
I'm skeptical this happens fast but I've never been more confident that the 18 team Big Ten is temporary. There are 3 other schools that are probably close to as valuable as M in the league - OSU, PSU and MSU. But the only one that DRIVES M's value is OSU. PSU won't be an annual game soon, and they're utterly replaceable to M with a big time OOC game. MSU drives some value, but really just as many, if not more, would probably tune into annual game with ND.
The M-OSU rivalry really is huge. It may be the only thing that keeps M from jumping. But there is enough bad blood here from 12 other schools that M has no financial need to support that I'm absolutely sure M won't think twice about creating a super league and leaving the rest behind.
November 8th, 2023 at 7:47 PM ^
Honestly though, if you're in charge of the ACC, wouldn't you absolutely start calling M and trying to woo them over to your conference? "Join us over here, we would absolutely appreciate you." I would. That could literally turn the fortunes of the conference.
November 8th, 2023 at 6:05 PM ^
And that is how it starts. Isaiah floats it and specifically says it sounds like message board fodder but it is true. That is one small step towards having that threat be realized.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:49 PM ^
Pettiti Is the head of a conference he should be building and promoting. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why he is going to burn it down. Michigan should say they are leaving the conference unless Pettiti is fired.
November 8th, 2023 at 5:57 PM ^
My theory is that the rest of the conference told Tony that Michigan will self-impose like they always do and did at the beginning of the year. Michigan fighting this, like this, I bet is shocking to everyone.
November 8th, 2023 at 6:01 PM ^
I think he got gaslit and really thought this was the "worst scandal ever" and so in the name of fairness was pushing on it. Yesterday he realized he didn't know what he was doing. Today he's waffling.
November 8th, 2023 at 8:28 PM ^
I would venture to bet this brief hypothesis is pretty accurate, which to me then begs the question:
How, as the commissioner of one of the two developing college football power conferences, do you not have someone within your administration capable of putting this situation into full context if you do not understand it yourself?
Like, there is no one in the league office that can (well.. could have) explain to Tony behind closed doors?:
"Stealing signs is part of the game in college football. Every coaching staff in our conference have low-level analysts on staff that attempt to steal their opponents' signs every week. What Connor did is technically against NCAA rules, although this is basically a non-issue unless the NCAA discovers evidence linking the recordings to coaching staff members that are responsible for game planning and play calling. Until that happens, the best move is to 'uphold the integrity of due process'. It is outside the scope B1G to administer punishment before the NCAA has finished an investigation. It's actually written in our Conference Bylaws Handbook."
The ineptitude of the league office is somewhat equally as shocking as the commissioner himself.

On the one hand, could be an inept bungler. On the other, a Pac 12 agent, secretly working to undermine the Big 10 for revenge.

Silence from Paul Thamel and Pete Finebaum!
November 8th, 2023 at 6:15 PM ^
When this whole thing is done, I suspect the Big Ten will be looking for its own Greg Sankey. This shit would never happen under his watch. He would have handled all the investigations internally, then kept his programs in line and prevent them from leaking by threatening to release his file of dirt on each program. That's how the SEC gets away with all their dirty business - they keep it internal.
November 8th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
In some ways, Michigan is stating “make my day” If Harbaugh is suspended. So long as the legal maneuverings allow him to be reinstated by Saturday, it may not be a bad thing. The PI firm and whomever paid the bill would be subpoenaed in 2 seconds.
November 8th, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
Yeah, this has turned into a real Mexican standoff, and I'm betting B1G will flinch first. M has called their bluff, brought in the big guns, and the prospect of a battalion of lawyers deposing nearly every coaching staff, digging through their texts, emails and phone records just has to be unacceptable and downright frightening at this point.
If the B1G's recent scandals have taught us anything, is that there has to be plenty of bodies buried around here, and I'm sure no school wants theirs exhumed, a couple in particular.

So….is there an actual rule that Osu, rutgers, purdue actually broke here??? and what would it be?? or is it just a sportsmanship rule thing?
November 8th, 2023 at 11:39 PM ^
They have strayed pretty damn close to breaking the advance shitting rule that Stalions broke. They'll argue it's not but, materially it is the same.
They likely get the same also on the wrist as m, or less, if they keep their mouths shut

Let's see:
1. Due process is the ONLY process
2. Others are doing in but in different ways
3. If that doesn't mean anything, eat shit and die!
