Michigan football in midst of longest conference title drought since 64

Submitted by michfanisbacka… on
Michigan has not won a conference title since 04. The last time U of M went a longer period without a conference title in football was when the wolverines won it in 1950 and did not again until 1964.I have a feeling this will be the longest drought in the next 50 years and that it will end soon.

1-7 vs both primary rivals in last 8 years while we are passing around great news.  That's 2-14 for those who hate math.

We lost 1 less game this year then Urban Meyer has lost in 4 years at OSU.

Sigh.

We came in 3rd  . .  in our division!

and didn't beat a rival in the 1st year of HARBAUGH!

There's actually plenty to sigh about.  Not wrist-slashy signing mind you, but "we've absolutely sucked for most of a decade and we don't know quite how deep the hole we're crawling out of is" sort of sighing.

REAL Fans ... but I'm not seeing it. The Walmart fans just transfered to some other team and we still pack in 110k every game. Except for "fans" that sell tickets to make money. Saw a lot of that last weekend. Not real fans either. Probably the same group that bailed and didn't stick with the team in tough times. Bo looks down and knows who they are.

This post seems like it would be better-placed last year, Michigan's 2015 losses to MSU and OSU notwithstanding.  A legitimate point if you're rallying for regime change. Now?  Not so much.

Overall, it reminds me of when your girlfriend is bitching about her ex all the time, even though the current relationship is great and you're a year into the relationship.

Look forward my good man/woman/manbearpig.  The ship is righted, and Michigan's getting better every day.

Next thing you'll tell us is that nobody on the team wanted to have their collective ass handed to them by OSU.  Really!?  Who knew!?!?

You're technically right.  A single 9 win (potentially 10) doesn't right the ship.  And nobody on the team is satisfied with where they are.  But think about where the team started from (i.e., the 2014 edition).

Overall Michigan's football team is a damned sight better than what we had last year, and - more importantly - the team is in the hands of one of the best coaches in sports, let alone CFB.  If folks want to wallow in the past, well, 'Murica.  But many of us feel really good about who is running the football team, and where it's headed.  When the captain knows what he's doing, and is running the ship the right way, good results will continue to come.

It's happening, good sir/maam/manbearkurpit.  It's happening.

That's fair. A single 9-3 season does not right the ship. But that doesn't mean we aren't in much better hands. Harbaugh has all the necessary tools to bring this program back to where it belongs and give us a championship.

That being said, I think we should seriously reconsider our expectations. 9-3 is amazing for how bad our team was last year, but Michigan is very much rebuilding. Don't expect a ridiculous turnaround like OSU had with Meyer (not even a fair comparison). It took Dantonio a while to make MSU a powerhouse. Same with Dabo Swinney with Clemson. This is much more like that. I think we can win a conference title faster than them, but with Meyer and Dantonio in the same division, our road is quite difficult.

How could you possibly predict that this will be the longest drought of the next 50 years? Nobody has any idea what programs are going to be like in the future. 10 years ago there's no chance you would have said that Texas, Miami, and Michigan would fall off, but here we are.

I remember winning the Big Ten with a fresman Chad Henne and thinking it would only get better. Who would have thought back then, that we would be waiting this long for the next one.

This is concerning. 2004, folks. Two-thousand-fucking-four. That is unacceptable. OSU has been smiting us and the conference title since 2002 and I am god damned sick of it.

Don't worry mate, we finally have the right coach in place. Harbaugh had to teach these players how to win games they should win, especially on the road. We went undefeated in conference road games for the first time since 97. Next year they will finally get that elusive win at the snakepit.

With the even-numbered OSU and MSU away-game schedule*, it seems we have two snakepits to visit next year.

That technicality aside, it's a great point about the road games.  Even with a relatively easy slate of road games this season (PSU and ... uh), it's impressive that a team that last year struggled so on the road ran the table this year.  Excelsior!

Staee can't even sell out that dump of a stadium and has a bunch of bandwagon fans who don't even know who the coach was before Dantonio. They think Staee started playing football in 2008. Someone please ban this bastard.

I was a fan in the early 60s. I remember 1964 (and 62 and 63) and all the rest of the 60s. I was a fan before 1969, during the ten year war much of which I saw first hand as a student, a fan through Bo and Mo and Lloyd, I was at the 1998 rose bowl, a fan all along. Time creates perspective. Despite its ending this was a turn around season. The program will likely have another rocky couple years, but Michigan is back and if Harbaugh stays (and barring a horrific AD hire I think thats certain) by 2018 the team will be contending not just for the Big Ten title but for it all.

So suck it up ladies. It could be as early as next year, (unlikely but after this season anything is possible) it could take three more years, but the die is cast and the team is on its way back, not just for an occasional season, but as a regular contender.

The past really is the future it you learn the right lessons, and the right lessons are ingrained in Harbaugh's soul.

Future is bright.

What's the point of this thread? I mean, we all know that it's been a while since Michigan won the big ten title. Why are you rubbing it in? Just enjoy a great 9-3 season and hopefully an even better one next year and on!

Besides the program being in a rough patch- hopefully ending- conference titles are more difficult to win now due to (1) 14 teams in conference instead of 10 or 11 and (2) no more co-champs. Whatever numbers they used to put up aren't realistic going forward, largely due to #2.
