Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports

Campbell was Michigan’s QB coach in 2023 and helped JJ McCarthy emerge as a potential first-round pick. Was also interim OC for the team’s win over ECU.

One question that comes to my mind is the mentoring for Grant Newsome.  Grant's moving from TEs to OL - and, most likely someone "new" will coach the TEs.

As run game coordinator (which I belive he's been for the past two seasons) -  Hart already should have a close alignment with the OL, TEs, etc.  And, that's one step away from Co-OC.

I'll grab my popcorn and look forward to seeing how the situation develops.

Looks like he has 7 years of OC experience according to his Wiki, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirk_Campbell.

Looking at ODU, their record drastically improved from 2020 to 2021, and was a offensive assistant for 3 years at PSU. No idea what he actually did there, but from 17-19 PSU was pretty decent.

From what I've seen, he's a guy recruits and players like. I'm torn on the CO-OC titles we see (If Hart was added), but this makes perfect sense.

Good for us and incredibly good for Coach Campbell and his family.

Going from OC at Alderson Broaddus to OC for the reigning FBS national champions in eight years is impressive!

I unfortunately had 97.1 on my radio for a brief period and caught Valenti going off about how Harbaugh left Michigan in a worse position than when he arrived and that it's now a dumpster fire.  He said no outside coach will come here and nobody in college would touch any of our coaches because of NCAA future penalties.

This national title really broke sparty for good.

I really don’t understand why people continue to fall for his gimmick. He clearly tries to get people riled up so that they will call and listen to the show, and the people don’t realize by doing that they are giving him even more money and an even bigger platform to spout his nonsense.

Similar to Twitter/X, you just have to ignore the idiots and don't give them attention. I've muted/blocked about 100 accounts over the past few months when it's obvious people are just posting clickbait or trolling to get attention/engagement. Don't give them the satisfaction (and the money that comes along with the views).

That's not the first time he's had that take. I will agree the 2015 team Harbaugh inherited had way more starting experience than the 2024 team will, but as far as program shape, stability plus even overall team depth it's absolutely not WORSE than when he got here. We had just gone 5-7, didnt make a bowl, had gotten blown out by Minnesota and lost to Maryland and Rutgers, and had an AD that had to give away tickets and was internet fighting with fans.

Consistency with QB development is essential.   There doesn't seem to be a clear QB starter that we had prior to the '23 season - and, of course - in '22 it began with comparing JJ and Cade.

The OOC is notably differen this year - and, Texas' visit to Ann Arbor on September 7th - will be an indicator.

I look forward to the offensive scheme - and, am wondering how much it will evolve.   I'll look at the run / pass ratio, which has been pretty close to 60/40 over the past three years.   As a point of reference - the R/P ratio has been between 38/62 and 41/50 "run / pass" over the past three years.

So what’s left? DC, LB, TE, S, one other spot and maybe RB?

edit: Word is that Steve Belichick son of Bill is taking an interview with Washington for DC role.  He was De facto DC for his dad for past 3 years and LB coach (Bill is notorious for not naming coordinators). The Pats D was very much elite with a collective of players not considered superstars aside from Judon and very cutting edge/similar to an amoeba style.  If he is looking to move to college Sherrone should get him on the horn now and talk up the elite D roster in place. Jedd left here to become patriots an coach before being hired by Arizona so there’s the connection.

Makes sense - a guy who knows the offense and works well with Moore.

I know people are complaining about the lack of outside hires but this is absurdly late in the cycle - you're limited with who you can reasonably grab beyond sitting coaches who have likely been at spots for months at this point.  I expect we'll see the staff shake up more next offseason when guys have a full year to look around and Moore gets to decide how he wants this team to look.  But Campbell seems like a good recruiter and a solid QB coach, so I get taking a swing with him.

Yep. The block “M” is going to stand for mystery going into next season because it is a complete mystery as to how this team will perform with the player and staff attrition.

Campbell and Newsome have been part of championship squads here. Whether they can take thar experience and translate late it into success into their new positions remains to be seen.

Are we seriously now taking the position that even as the returning national champions, with our resources, we cannot poach a coach from the other hundreds of programs out there?  I mean, we said no one watches baseball, we didn't even attempt to go after an established big name college coach when the basketball spot opened up, but are we not even at the level of Missouri in football, who announced that they took Houston's defensive line coach today (absurdly late in the cycle)?  And this isn't a comment on Campbell; I don't know enough to comment on this hire.  This idea that Michigan cannot do what other programs are doing, that even spending a little extra on our S&C coach for continuity after saving $6M/year with a first time head coach was too much, etc.  It seems that there is an excuse for everything, and a need to spin everything as a positive.

Campbell also was OC at Old Dominion, IIRC.  Is there anything to glean from his playcalling in that role?  Curious in particular if we will pass more.  I have to imagine Moore wants to "Smash"...but you never know..
