Someone help me understand the logic behind this punishment. They couldn't afford to move without help, where in the he'll will they get the money for a charitable donation?

Bag man. You think the NCAA cares? They care about their cut and their image. They don’t care about any of the players. They are a reactive organization.

Ok, I read the article but maybe I'm missing something....if a poor family took $11,500 for 'moving' what are the odds that any of that money is still around or that they have $11,500 to donate now...and if they DO turn up $11,500 to 'donate' what are the odds that isn't just booster money again? This makes no sense

Total guess here, but I’m just going to assume the NCAA secretly knows a lot more money exchanged hands and instead of calling him out on it publicly, a back door deal was made in the form of the charitable donation.  If Wiseman and his legal team have agreed to this, I’m also going to assume they think he’s getting off easy.  That’s what’s fun about speculation though!

Did anyone really think there wasn’t shady shit going on with Penny Hardaway up at Memphis? His first major coaching opportunity and all of a sudden lands all these stud recruits?

This won’t be the last we hear of these kinds of stories out of Memphis.

Exchange of money to attend Memphis was clearly going on when Calipari was the coach so nothing new there for Memphis, but I still don't understand how the NCAA has the ability to punish a player for accepting money from someone to ensure they would attend a certain high school.

The violation was taking money from a Memphis booster in HS, then attending Memphis.

I don't think it would have been a violation if he went somewhere else. What I don't understand is why Memphis isn't being punished. They're supposed to know and follow the rules.

I was very pro cracking down hard on Memphis and Wiseman, but this punishment is just kinda stupid and hypocritical. Where is Wiseman supposed to get $11,000 if he supposedly can't make money? I hope the NCAA does crack down hard on Penny and Memphis though because they were actively defying the NCAA by playing an ineligible player

I think you have to read between the lines a little bit here.  Wiseman loses 12 games and ~$12k.  For a player that is predicted to go #1 overall in the draft, this is peanuts.  This is a good deal so that he can still hype himself up in college(think Zion) without having to compete in the G-league against guys that are clawing to make the NBA.  If he can stay healthy he will be a lottery pick and his success is much more guaranteed by playing in college the rest of the season.  I'm sure someone is creative enough to find a loophole in this whole "charitable donation" requirement.  The idea of the NCAA trying to keep track of charitable donations is laughable anyway.  It won't happen.  Rest assured, he'll be just fine and will make more money than most of us could make in many lifetimes.

For reference, I come from a mid-lower middle class family, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that I could not have scrounged together $11,500 on my own, nor with the help of my parents.  Thus, I’m not sure how the NCAA can really do this.

Side note, and I don’t want to start a separate thread about this, but are the ads on mobile becoming a bit excessive for anyone else?  I can’t see about 1/3rd of the screen due to ads these days.

Edit:  They mysteriously went away 1 min after I posted this.  Spooky.

We really need to start cheating hardcore in both sports. There is very little downside to getting caught

An underrated aspect in all of this is Wiseman, the #1 recruit, helped recruit the rest of that stellar class so even if hes not playing he still had a huge impact on their roster
