Memphis basketball star suspended 12 games and told to donate $11,500 to charity of his choice.
Someone help me understand the logic behind this punishment. They couldn't afford to move without help, where in the he'll will they get the money for a charitable donation?

Bag man. You think the NCAA cares? They care about their cut and their image. They don’t care about any of the players. They are a reactive organization.
November 20th, 2019 at 6:55 PM ^
what a joke
November 20th, 2019 at 6:59 PM ^
A real charity, not a dancer named Charity.
November 20th, 2019 at 8:45 PM ^
It said, “of his choice.” Let them man send his cash to whatever 501c3 or g-string he pleases.
November 20th, 2019 at 6:59 PM ^
Chase Young has a family friend that can help out.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:01 PM ^
Ok, I read the article but maybe I'm missing something....if a poor family took $11,500 for 'moving' what are the odds that any of that money is still around or that they have $11,500 to donate now...and if they DO turn up $11,500 to 'donate' what are the odds that isn't just booster money again? This makes no sense
November 20th, 2019 at 8:07 PM ^
Right? Where the hell is Wiseman gonna get 12 grand if he can’t profit off his name or hold another job while at school? Someone better get saving on his termly food stipend.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:01 PM ^
F that. If I’m Wiseman, I’m seeing if I can just go to the G-League for the rest of the season.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:02 PM ^
Total guess here, but I’m just going to assume the NCAA secretly knows a lot more money exchanged hands and instead of calling him out on it publicly, a back door deal was made in the form of the charitable donation. If Wiseman and his legal team have agreed to this, I’m also going to assume they think he’s getting off easy. That’s what’s fun about speculation though!
November 20th, 2019 at 7:05 PM ^
And Mitch McGary got suspended for a year (later reduced to 6 months) for smoking a joint. SMH
November 20th, 2019 at 10:17 PM ^
This also sounds an awful lot like a former booster buying UofM basketball players shoes and stuff when they couldn't afford them. If I remember correctly, didn't they have to vacate wins? Somehow Memphis isn't held responsible for any of this? NCAA never fails to amaze me.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:25 PM ^
The phrase "unintended consequences" comes to mind.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:29 PM ^
Did anyone really think there wasn’t shady shit going on with Penny Hardaway up at Memphis? His first major coaching opportunity and all of a sudden lands all these stud recruits?
This won’t be the last we hear of these kinds of stories out of Memphis.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:43 PM ^
Penny has been coaching one or more current Memphis players since middle school and was Wiseman's high school coach when he was senior at East High School in Memphis.
November 20th, 2019 at 8:18 PM ^
You realize that Penny paying his family so he could be his HS coach is what caused this problem. I, for one, will not be shocked if money is changing hands so players attend Memphis.
November 20th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
Exchange of money to attend Memphis was clearly going on when Calipari was the coach so nothing new there for Memphis, but I still don't understand how the NCAA has the ability to punish a player for accepting money from someone to ensure they would attend a certain high school.
November 20th, 2019 at 9:25 PM ^
The violation was taking money from a Memphis booster in HS, then attending Memphis.
I don't think it would have been a violation if he went somewhere else. What I don't understand is why Memphis isn't being punished. They're supposed to know and follow the rules.
November 20th, 2019 at 7:58 PM ^
I was very pro cracking down hard on Memphis and Wiseman, but this punishment is just kinda stupid and hypocritical. Where is Wiseman supposed to get $11,000 if he supposedly can't make money? I hope the NCAA does crack down hard on Penny and Memphis though because they were actively defying the NCAA by playing an ineligible player
November 20th, 2019 at 10:11 PM ^
I think you have to read between the lines a little bit here. Wiseman loses 12 games and ~$12k. For a player that is predicted to go #1 overall in the draft, this is peanuts. This is a good deal so that he can still hype himself up in college(think Zion) without having to compete in the G-league against guys that are clawing to make the NBA. If he can stay healthy he will be a lottery pick and his success is much more guaranteed by playing in college the rest of the season. I'm sure someone is creative enough to find a loophole in this whole "charitable donation" requirement. The idea of the NCAA trying to keep track of charitable donations is laughable anyway. It won't happen. Rest assured, he'll be just fine and will make more money than most of us could make in many lifetimes.
November 20th, 2019 at 8:12 PM ^
Whew, Memphis dodged a bullet, good thing they weren't spending too much time stretching, we all know how egregious that is!
November 20th, 2019 at 8:45 PM ^
Fuck the NCAA
November 20th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
The movie Blue Chips comes to mind.
November 20th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
The real headline should be that this is the NCAA finally admitting that amateurism is a load of shit and has been for along time now.
November 20th, 2019 at 9:17 PM ^
But you know that he will come up with the money (possibly from the same exact source) and it somehow won't be a violation the second time.
November 20th, 2019 at 9:56 PM ^
For reference, I come from a mid-lower middle class family, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that I could not have scrounged together $11,500 on my own, nor with the help of my parents. Thus, I’m not sure how the NCAA can really do this.
Side note, and I don’t want to start a separate thread about this, but are the ads on mobile becoming a bit excessive for anyone else? I can’t see about 1/3rd of the screen due to ads these days.
Edit: They mysteriously went away 1 min after I posted this. Spooky.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:18 AM ^
Yes to the ads. Was a thread about it recently
November 21st, 2019 at 12:47 AM ^
Yes, maybe Brian can lend the kid the $11,000 from the ad money he made today.
November 21st, 2019 at 1:23 AM ^
The NCAA can't do this. This whole NCAA action is a farce, and it knows it.
November 20th, 2019 at 9:57 PM ^
He has Chase Young's family friend on retainer, obviously
November 20th, 2019 at 10:22 PM ^
Where will he get the $11,500 to donate? wink, wink...
What a joke.
November 20th, 2019 at 11:24 PM ^
How did Chase Young pay back a loan? If they had the money to begin with, they wouldn't all need "loans" from "family friends."
November 21st, 2019 at 12:31 AM ^
The story about the loan being used to help pay for his family to travel is obviously bullshit and just created to tug on peoples heartstrings. Its amazing so many people fell for it
November 21st, 2019 at 12:48 AM ^
Exactly. It's really surprising when every time you turn around people are lying through their teeth yet others continually believe whatever they say.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:26 AM ^
Gofundme page should pull in a solid $50k+ from Memphis alum. Henny Pardaway might be a name you see on the donor list.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:28 AM ^
We really need to start cheating hardcore in both sports. There is very little downside to getting caught
An underrated aspect in all of this is Wiseman, the #1 recruit, helped recruit the rest of that stellar class so even if hes not playing he still had a huge impact on their roster
November 21st, 2019 at 7:14 AM ^
I'd love to see them challenge the NCAA to enforce that in an actual court.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:55 AM ^
No penalty for Memphis? Fine. Raise the banners!
November 21st, 2019 at 11:07 AM ^
NCAA knows he's gotten the money from unlawful payments. May as well make him spend some of it on something other than bling and hoes.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:31 PM ^
Maybe you could start your comment with "I'm not racist, but..."
November 21st, 2019 at 2:32 PM ^
Why anyone doesnt cheat in the NCAA is beyond me. If they don't enforce the rules do they even exist?
