Mel’s time running out?

It appears they are going to let his contract expire.

Robert Underdunk Terwilliger, Jr., author of so many great quotes, including my favorite:

"I am presently incarcerated, imprisoned for a crime I did not even commit. 'Attempted murder?' Now honestly, what is that? Do they give a Nobel Prize for 'attempted chemistry'"?

His contract expires April 30, so it's premature to say what's going to happen with a week to go. Wouldn't surprise me if the AD made an extension announcement on the 30th.

However, it is very eyebrow raising that we're even in this position right now. Not sure exactly how to read into this and the investigation. The investigation allegations didn't seem serious enough to put Mel or leave or to cause a bunch of kids with plenty of opportunities elsewhere to leave en masse (plus this year's incoming mega class seems unphased as well). So I don't really understand the circumstances that would now lead it to hold up Mel's contract extension

I’d think it’s just an optics thing at this point. They know they’re bringing Mel back, but doing so before the results of an investigation has the potential for some negative press that they’d like to avoid, even though there’s enough information for them to know they’re not firing him.

My guess is there’s either a behind the scenes extension in place already that will be announced shortly after the results of the investigation are released, or there’s an understanding that even though his contract is expired, he’s going to be brought back.

Really seems like it’s status quo and they’re just waiting for the investigation report to announce an extension.

FWIW - I listened to a M-live podcast last week - "Wolverine confidential" I think.  They were suggesting that Mel's contract was going to run out AND there was only a small chance he would return as Hockey Coach for M because of the "scandal".  They even joked that M and MSU would be fighting over coaching candidates.

Their indicators were circumstantial imo - rumors within the media at the frozen 4, the fact that neither Mel nor Warde was interested in commenting on the situation etc.  Since I had heard it from no other source I wrote it off.

My best guess is that they are waiting to extend until the investigation is concluded so the Optics are better.

If only the OP were referring to Mel Tucker, that would be pretty swell.  HIs time in East Lansing can run out any time.

Or maybe the AD is going to give Mel a Mel-sized extension as long as the investigation comes back OK.

RIP Mel Blanc, more than just his contract expired.

Has Grandmaster Melle Mel put anything out lately?

This post is exhibit A as to why we sometimes engage in what I consider  'passive moderating', one of the tools available to us since we (LSA and I and other mods) can't directly dock points.

The OP is now down to the 100-point threshold; falling below 100 points effectively prevents him from posting additional "informative" threads.  If we had instead chosen to delete this, he'd still be able to post threads; instead, he'll have to earn his way back.

Proceed accordingly, folks!

I'm still taking negs from a post yesterday, but I have edited nothing. I'll take the hits. Being the subject of a massive neg bang can be kind of fun when it's on something pretty harmless. And it shook the board up. It's been kind of sleepy around here. So, I applaud the o.p. for their critically underwritten, cryptic, poorly-conceived work on this.

All those neg points you took in the NIL thread were undeserved.  Negatives should ONLY be given for troll posts IMO, not “you have an opinion I disagree with” posts.

No message board should ever develop a hive mind.  Indiscriminate negatives for “you have an opinion I disagree with” posts cultivates a hive mind, however.

Negs belong to more than trolls.  Poorly worded and/or sourced threads deserve any hate they get too. Also, threads that duplicate posts from the same day.  I have sympathy though for folks who post at the same time or don't see the duplicate that has fallen off the first page and isn't obvious from a quick search. I've been a victim of both.
