[MBB] What was THAT?

Submitted by Coldwater on November 5th, 2019 at 9:14 PM

An absolute tale of 2 halves.   First half was exciting, up-tempo, intense. Everything was going great with this new look Wolverine team.   Juwan Howard and his new-look team looked invincible.

Then about a quarter of the way through the second half everything just stopped.   The wind came out of their sails for some reason and it looked like they started sleepwalking through the game.   X looked unfocused and sloppy.  The defense especially, in the paint, was nonexistent. They gave up so many easy layups down the lane.       That game was just flat out weird.

Typical, just like football.

No ANGER towards the opponent.

No "We're going to BURY you, because you embarrassed our football team years ago" mentality.

Up 30 points and a 20-3 run by 'App St.' in the 2nd half.

This does not happen with Duke, staee, Kansas or Kentucky.

They step on your throat and continue in the 2nd half -- to win by 25+.

Ever watch Izzo coach a game?   BITTER anger until the 0:00 shows on the clock.

Also, why would we in ANY sport EVER schedule App St. ever again?

It is just an excuse to continually remind the world of the Horror.... because it is ALWAYS brought up/thought about.  Don't schedule this team ever again and try to minimize their 'media coverage'.  Let them disappear back into oblivion.

Seriously?!?!

Juwan was SUCH an emotional player, I was hoping to see that in his coaching.

Nope.

DAMN.  Everyone already HATES us.  Refs, rivals, some grandma in New Mexico.

Isn't that enough to make our athletes/coaches fight with rage to the bitter end, every game?

Go Blue.

We have a bunch of hot and cold former bench players getting minutes now, as the commentator mentioned.

The back court  is undersized and streaky shooting the rock, that's just how it's going to be all year.

We have to ride the front court this year, and hope Franz lives up to the hype

If Brooks can be a legit option, Z/Brooks/Franz/Livers/Teske a solid 5. Hopefully Franz as a creator and best of that group at getting a bucket in half court if we need it. I like Livers but he can’t do this. The bench could be scary bad, especially at the guards. I see Brooks/Z playing a ton of minutes this year. Remember in basketball, 1 guy changes EVERYTHING. No Franz changes the rotation and roles of guys when he’s out. Lets not overreact to a game where 2 of our 4 best were really bad and 1 of those 4 still out with Injury. Might be a long season, but might be great. Still need to see more. 1-0. Creighton will be solid test next week in Game #2.

That performance did not inspire confidence. Basketball is a weird game at times though and runs do happen.

If we played like that against a Big Ten team we would have been soundly defeated. Fortunately we did not play a Big Ten team and we won.

It’s a long season. Beilein had plenty of clunkers early in the season. His teams always got better. I’m sure there will be some improvements under Howard. I can be patient.

Exactly - in some of our BEST seasons with Beilein, we had games like this early in the season, and some of them we actually lost.  I think we need to settle down.  Having some things to work on after game 1 isn't a bad thing.  Playing a perfect game against App St and blowing them out is great for confidence (and fun for us) but doesn't help the team a ton.

Well the year Michigan went to the national title against nova...they had some bad early losses and close games against teams like central. The key is to make progress and grow as a team. Go blue!

I dont understand the lack of any pt for Bajema. These are the games where you would like to see him get some run, especially when we were up 30. He is probably a liability on defense but so is Nunez and DDJ. I'd like to see what he could provide as far as shooting.

Well if nothing else this game should give Howard a good teaching moment about not letting an opponent up off the mat. Clearly the effort dropped after the big lead from both players and coaches.

I watched the first half then turned it off to help get the child to bed.  Looked at the score with 30 seconds left and was like, uh wuh?

I think we'll be fine.  First half looked a lot like a Beilein team save a few fouls and a couple turnovers.  The offensive system looked similar.  Defense was good.  Need to learn to sustain the positives.

Man, that hot take artists are out in force. Since so many of you are deeply disappointed in Juwan's only game at Michigan, should we just fire him now?

Watched until early second half and then fell asleep.  Saw a 30 point was whittled to an 8 point win.  I'm wondering what happened.

Looks like Brooks was huge and will be key going forward.  Simpson just had an uncharacteristically horrible night.  The 11 turnovers from Simpson and Livers were ridiculous and likely the biggest problem.   I doubt these two have similar games very often.  DDJ needs to find his shot since we can't count on Brooks to play lights out every game.

I thought Johns, Nunez and Castleton all looked promising and should be significant contributors all year.  Teske should be solid all year.

We really need Wagner and Bajema.

I didn’t watch the game but judging from the comments, Howard should be immediately fired, Crisler should be burned to the ground, and Michigan basketball fans should all stick their heads in the oven and turn on the gas.

I missed a big portion of the second half so I missed some ugliness, but I was impressed with how we attacked the zone from what I saw. A lot of great passing to and from the bigs in the middle. Idk if they just let up but they obviously can't continue to do that. I'll take the W, they looked great at times. Defense needs some work.

People have to reel in their expectations OR if youre like me and believe the team can make a little noise in March at least don't act like the sky is falling because of a close win

This very well could end up being Simpsons worst game of the season. Im not too worried about him. He was just trying to make too many fancy one arm passes that his teammates clearly weren't ready for

Teske needs to learn to pace himself. He was on fire in the beginning but didn't do much the final 30 minutes. He looked tired the entire second half

Dejulius seems to be an easy mark for opposing teams. Easy to defend and easy to score on

Livers needs to create his own shots.

Id like to see Johns put in some work in the post and prove he can score before taking too many 3s

We desperately NEED someone who can create their own shot off the dribble to avoid long droughts like tonight. Hopefully Franz is that guy eventually

The GOOD...Teske Brooks 1st half

The BAD... Ball handling and DDJ

The UGLY...2nd half

Hope Wagner is ready to contribute because he is needed.

This was a perfect opening game. Lot's of positives in first half and early in second.  Then a collapse.  So, in short, team got to feel good about itself and humbled in same game.  Now, JH has about 15 minutes of tape to show them what can happen when you stop moving without ball, when you play hero ball, when you forget about team defense.  Not being sarcastic, you can tell team started to play "pickup" ball as they thought game was over when they were up 30. There is so many teachable moments in this game and it is just what they needed.

Have we been so good in basketball now that BPONE extends to the MBB team?

1.) Howard is new and from the NBA. NBA coaches don't chew their players out because it doesn't work there. There were some times in this game that he should have but it's his first game, he's learning. NBA coaches also trust and let their players dig out of holes without taking timeouts (Phil Jackson was famous for this). This doesn't necessarily work in college and he'll learn

2.) He doesn't have go-to sets to get baskets when the team really needs them since he's new with the team

3.) They were up by 30 and let off the gas a little in the opener... this isn't like losing to NJIT. The Michigan football team let off the gas up 28-0 Illinois a few weeks ago. Shit happens

Of all the people in the world, I cannot believe I am going to be the "everyone calm down guy." But I am.

There have been countless times during the regular season under JB where we all wanted to rip our hair out.

This team will be fine. We all knew going in this is not a championship team, but I they they can do really well and win a couple games in the NCAAs if they are firing on all cylinders.

Its the first game with a new head coach where everyone's learning a new system. Calm down.

Could've been better, sure, and there's probably a few losses coming up on the schedule. But as long as they keep improving week to week, make the tournament and build momentum for the future, I can't ask for much else.
