MBB: Coaching candidates?

Anybody who comes to mind if Warde decides to encourage Beilein to retire? Love the hell outta Beilein but I think it would be wise for him to retire, in hopes of maintaining his legacy here. The Program needs new energy.

Most tournament runs require a degree of luck.  If Trey Burke doesn't make a prayer shot, Beilein has 0 final fours to his name.  Crean actually had one of the 2 or 3 best teams in the country that year, but any team can get knocked out in a sudden death tournament.  He's won the Big Ten outright twice in the past 5 years, after taking over a program that had hit rock bottom after the Sampson scandal.

Is he my first choice?  No.  Is he a serious upgrade over what we currently have?  Hell yes

The tournament is so random and so heavily based on matchups that I don't like judging a coach based on tournament record.  Jay Wright was labeled a "choker" in the tournament because of how many times he had a high seed and got bounced early, and then he won it all last year.  I get that people don't like Crean but I would take him.  Ever since he pulled Indiana out of that hole they were in, he's been pretty good there.

Do you think he'd make both a hockey and basketball hire in the same year? After his comments about not wanting to have Red retire because he was in his first month on the job makes me skeptical.

How come nobody mentions the contract extension Hackett gave Beilein? He has a buyout of $6 mil if he can him after this season. $5 mil after next year. Sorry, that was a huge mistake. Stop talking about Hackett like some some infallible God.

Scott Drew?

I'm gonna throw a name out there I don't think has been mentioned. There is probably no hotter coach in college basketball than Scott Drew at Baylor, even despite its disappointing loss to West Virginia.

I would take any Drew at this point, including Homer.

Harbaugh said last night he was an adimirer from afar of the Drews since the 90s.   Make it happen Jim.

While apathy is already creeping in (or rushing in), another year and it's going to be Lions 2008 like around the program.  There is no hope on the horizon - it's just the same brand of kids coming in like we've had the past few years.

Hat tip to the man for being from all accounts a great man, but we need results.  This brand of basketball also doesn't represent Midwest sensibilities - and for you east coast folks that's probably something that you laugh at but this is why we love Zach MF Novak.  I can respect that sort of player even if limited in his basketball skills.  I'd rather watch sincere bona fide athletes would give their left arm to get a loose ball but are mediocre at the whole shooting thing then this type of player group which is all finesse wimps.  And has been for years.  I could at least live with this sort of record if I saw that effort and desire out there - instead its a bunch of Joey Harringtons playing piano (NTTIAWWT) and a coach who just is getting more of those.

Warde was handed a golden goose in the football program - he needs to show his chomps in evaluation in bball.

Beilein has been too good to the university to just fire mid season. Michigan is better than that. After the season is over is a different story. It's obviously time. Michigan is not a school that should have to take diamonds in the rough. We are an elite school and should operate as such. We have the resources and the brand to be on an elite level. Warden needs to realize that before he gets his own thread.

Let Harbaugh coach the team. Would actually be entertaining to hear what he is saying when he is slamming his clipboard on the floor and berating the refs.

I had a similar thought, but I hesitate as he has been extremely itinerant through his career and it's tough to assess his recruiting.  Nevada is playing well now, but it's hard to determine if it's him or the players.  There's not a great track record to judge his recruiting and he wasn't great in the NBA.

Selfishly, I am from Nevada and have several friends who are Nevada alums and kind of want the Nevada program to stabilize a bit for their sakes.  I don't really care beyond being randomly happy when I see Nevada won.

A name I haven't seen mentioned. Dude has been a solid coach everywhere he's been. Don't know if he would leave Oregon, but I'd like to think Michigan is a higher tier job?

Wasn't long ago he took us to the NC with a 3 star PG turned best player in the country under his guidance. Great evaluator of talent, great developer of talent and leader for a sport that is 2nd class in it's own school. Will be tough to go against Izzo, Coach K, Cal, Williams, Boeheim, anyone who coaches UCLA, AZ, UConn, Indiana, etc. without a great evaluator, developer and offensive mind like his. He's revered by about every current coach (including Harbaugh), former coach, analyst and his teams always improve as the season goes. Relax, take a pill and remember the times before him.

Apparently some will never see the light.  If he's such a great evaluator and developer of talent, how come top 40 players like Walton and Irvin are nothing more than average Big Ten players?  How come 3/5ths of the 2014 recruiting class are no longer on the team?  How come we're playing walk ons over scholarship freshmen?

Walton has been injury riddled. We all know that. As for injuries, players departing early, etc. that's a whole other argument working in Coach B's behalf. He can't re-up like Stringer Bell. Mo Wagner is #17 in Hollingers PER for NCAAB - not too shabby. Irvin has never developed and is frustrating to watch every game, every year. He has hit big shots, he has had big games, he shows flashes but he has never put it all together. Don't know why. I understand the arguments but let's not just give up because we got shlacked in the 4th game of the B1G season against a bad team. Trust the process and evaluate when the season is over.

Dude it's been 3 years since Stauskas, McGary, and GR3 left early.  That's no longer an excuse.  Caris Levert graduated, he wouldn't be available to save this team and quite frankly the team wasn't good with him as the centerpiece the past couple of years.  Every team deals with injuries.  If his 2014 class wasn't a complete bust, or if he had gotten just one decent contributor in the 2016 class, Walton's ineffectiveness (whether it's injury related or not) wouldn't be so crippling.  The failures of this team are squarely on the coach.  His recruiting, talent identification, and player development have all led us right here.
