Matt Campbell - ISU coach tweet on staying

Submitted by Ajcoss on January 10th, 2021 at 1:30 PM

Tweet from Campbell today when he was rumored to be interested in the Jets...

“So grateful for the commitment of so many to continue to want to build our program together. Our foundation has been built on Loyalty and Faithfulness and it will continue to be our guiding light. Humbled and Grateful to continue to lead to be different.“

What ISU has coming back for 21:

20 of 22/23 starters return from a top ten Fiesta Bowl champion ISU squad.
•8 of 9 all conference guys are returning.
•3 of 4 All Americans are returning.
•Matt Campbell and John Heacock are returning.

What does this mean? Well I am a huge Campbell fan like a ton of us on this board. Simple, he wasn’t leaving ISU after this year. I think he loves ISU and their key group of players who have built the culture. He wasn’t leaving Ames after an odd year with few/no fans and all the distractions of 2020. Maybe Warde knew this in conversations behind the scenes? Read reports/rumors on here with people in the know that Warde didn’t offer this Harbaugh deal until they met that Thursday night on like the 17th. Maybe he knew they had no shot this year to get their guy. I was upset with the Harbaugh extension, but if we didn’t get Campbell/Fickell this year, I think lots of us would’ve been upset and be like how can this happen!  Remember, it takes two to tango. This Harbaugh deal gives us flexibility in the next 1-3 years to get “our guy” if Harbaugh doesn’t work out.

Chris: I will be deleting your diary OP very shortly. I wanted to first post this notice before doing so in order to give you a heads-up.

The reason?  It doesn't meet the requirements necessary to qualify as a diary.

Please feel free to re-post it on the Message Board.

I would keep in mind that a lot of things can happen between now and then. A few years ago I for one would have expected Urban Meyer to be coaching at Ohio State and not Ryan Day. Brian Kelly could kill another student or try his hand in the pros. One coach changing jobs could start up the carousel and free up a job Campbell wants.

Or not.

If I'm Campbell, though, Michigan is one of the jobs I keep an eye on.

(The Jets are definitely not a job to keep your eye on. I was actually surprised a few weeks ago when the Jets fired Gase--only because I had it in my head that they'd fired him a couple weeks before that. I can't believe he made it through the entire regular season.)

Couldn't agree more, 1WhoStayed.  All you need to do is pull that string out to its ultimate length to see how dumb it is:  Michigan / Harbaugh go undefeated and win a National Championship next year.  Meanwhile, ISU goes 0-12.  After that occurs, someone steals Harbaugh away (which Catchafire would clearly be happy about at that point in time) and we could joyously get Campbell for REALLY cheap.

Let's not get carried away...

He also lost at home to a Sun Belt Conference team. Additionally, he lost his Conference Championship Game in a Conference which did not send anyone to the CFP.

The win against the Pac 12 Champion was against a team which finished 4-3. Oregon only played in the Pac 12 Championship Game because the First Place team in the North Division (Washington) was unable to play because they did not have enough eligible players because of Covid.

Ok, so they lost their conference championship game, against a team they already beat, by 6 points and IIRC, they had a game winning drive end on a turnover.  The reason the Big 12 didn't get an invite to the CFP, is that they are biased towards the ACC, and the blowout losses by both ACC reps proved that neither were worthy of being there, at least ND was definitely not.  Yes, they did stub their toe early against LA, but seriously, if played later in the year they would have easily beaten them.

You need to emphasize the word ACCOMPLISHED. Lots of past accomplishments. We always prop up Harbaugh about what he's done in the PAST.

Meanwhile, at Michigan... crickets.

Give me Fickell or Campbell all day, any day. Young, fired up passionate coaches. Or- the lifeless dude that can barely string together coherent sentences.

Hmmm...accounting for Campbell’s non-existent professional experience, it seems like they have near identical college experiences. Both took over historic doormats, turned them around, and won the equivalent of NY6 bowl games (read: Harbaugh’s Stanford experience, not UM). Certainly, Campbell has achieved much more in the past few years than Harbaugh has, and he’s trending up with positive momentum. Even though records are similar (except for this year), Campbell’s transformation of that ISU program is nothing short of extraordinary!

That is why the Michigan job is much harder than Iowa St. You can never beat your rival nor win a conference championship and you are everybody’s hero.

Campbell nor Fickell want any part of this Michigan job. It is way too difficult. To succeed, you will have to be at the absolute top of your game. In this particular case, it is good news for Michigan.

Thank goodness we have Jim Harbaugh.

It is the truth. The college football paradigm has radically changed over the past decade. I think we all agree that Harbaugh is a quirky personality. He is what we need to break the current paradigm.

If we list the advantages that Michigan has in this current era of college football, I think we would all be surprised at how few there actually are.
