Let's Go Red Wings?
Yes the Wings have struggled. Yes, their incredible playoff streak is in serious jeopardy. Having Datsyuk would have really helped. Rookie goaltender now getting unexpected starts (Howard injury). Potential to be a long year.
But just when you think there's nothing to cheer about, they beat Pittsburgh, Montreal and Boston in order! LET'S GO RED WINGS!!

Some dickwipe called Joe Louis a dump on NBC.
You don't get to call it anything unless you're from here.
It's a dump, but it's OUR dump.
January 18th, 2017 at 11:23 PM ^
I think anyone can call it a dump--it is one of the grimiest facilities in pro sports and lacks the historic charm of other similarly 'dumpy' places and they are replacing it next season.

There's a lot of great history in that barn. But it smells like pee.

Place is a dump. I'm all set with two urinals, two stalls, and the giant tubs in the bathroom.

With all due respect.
Fuck you bro.

When did Barry Melrose move to NBC?

I have many fond memories at the Joe. Probably going at least once or twice more this year to sit on those big fluffy red chairs - at least before they are gone for good!

you were from Detroit.

My birth certificate says that and that's where it ends as far as that goes.
A short drive though...

Ha - I couldn't agree more. I've been to almost half of the other NHL areas, and after the Islanders left the Nassau Coliseum, we officially have the worst arena in the league. The Honda Center hasn't exactly aged well, but I don't think I've ever sat in a seat at the Joe in the last 5 years that wasn't broken or falling apart in some capacity. Don't get me wrong - I love being there and the memories are amazing. The atmosphere is great. The structure itself though, well it really is time to move on. LGRW!

A dump's a dump's a dump. And the Joe is a dump.

Great comeback

I kept it on because I don't get too many Wings' games here in Oregon. This is a huge win for the young kids and Mrazek.

In many cases, yes. But the playoff streak is so long now, the suggestion you made is sacrilege.
January 19th, 2017 at 8:36 AM ^
It shouldn't be. If Holland honestly believes the team is good enough to make a true run (which I doubt) then go for it, but finishing in 7th or 8th just to extend a meaningless streak is absurd and detrimental to any rebuilding efforts.
January 19th, 2017 at 10:22 AM ^
What proof is there that tanking helps rebuilding?
PS
I already know the answer is "there is no proof".

but that absolutely need to doa full rebuild. The playoff streak is now an albatross that deludes the management and some fans that this team can compete for a Cup when it couldn't be further from the truth. Making another first round playoff exit does nothing for this team going forward. They need to become sellers ASAP though I doubt Holland will have the guts to do it.

Somehow, you could really feel that watching it on TV. It just seemed like a game they were going to score a lot of goals despite the early deficit. Crazy.

....you would've thought he wasn't gonna leave Tampa Bay until they had won two cups. But if they keep tanking this year we might actually have a chance to bring the captain back.
January 19th, 2017 at 10:11 AM ^
Holland refused to move elsewhere in the organization and allow Stevie Y to assume the GM role, hence his move to TB. I don't see Illitch moving Holland now after all these years.

January 19th, 2017 at 7:51 AM ^
Holland is a stubborn.......errrrrrr.......patient.....guy. I think he will stand pat and stick with his, "I like my team" and "getting Kronwall back from injury is like a blockbuster trade" lines. Only if they are clearly out of the playoffs would he look to move guys like Vanek, Tatar and Green. I almost wish they could keep Vanek because I think they could actually resign him for a reasonable 3-year deal this summer. Maybe they could trade him as a rental and still resign him this summer.
January 18th, 2017 at 11:50 PM ^
The problem with the Detroit sports teams is that their GMs all suck and never want to make big deals.

Early returns on Quinn are pretty good. Decker was one of the best rookies in the league, Glasgow started on the OL for several games, A'Shawn Robinson was a contributor on the DL. Marvin Jones was a solid acquisition. He had a good first season IMO.
January 19th, 2017 at 1:33 AM ^
I mean I guess the past few seasons haven't been full of big deals, but Ken Holland tried his damndest to get Stamkos here by trading away Datsyuk's contract. If you go back to our last cup run, he signed Brad Stewart. He also assembled the GOAT hockey team in 2002. Sure his moves in the cap era have been questionable sometimes (Legwand trade), but he's made pretty big deals in his career.
January 19th, 2017 at 2:22 AM ^
You mean like those albatross contracts JV and Miggy have?
January 19th, 2017 at 10:25 AM ^
/s
The Tigers have one big issue. Their biggest trade assets (Miggy, JV) are in their 30's and have huge contracts. It's hard to get a lot of value back now. In hindsight, they would've been better off trading Miggy, JV and Max when they hired Ausmus. We lost Max for nothing, still have Miggy and JV's contracts and we have one WC loss to show for it. I think this team can compete for a playoff spot, but I don't have faith as long as Ausmus is still the manager. He blew in that WC series and has shown little improvement since. So you might as well stockpile some talent until a good manager is hired.
SVG has done a decent job on the trade market. He was really active initially, but I think he wants to see what this team can do before the trade deadline, now that they're healthy (I think KCP is back).
Red Wings have little in terms of assets to trade. The young guys should be safe, but Zetterberg won't net you much based on his age and declining skillset. Vanek and Nielsen might get you pieces, but I wouldn't deal them unless they get a top-6 defenseman in return. If they can get a top 6-Dman, who's excellent on the PP, I'd pull the trigger. That may be enough to sneak them into the playoffs.
January 18th, 2017 at 11:57 PM ^
He never plays the young guys!!! O wait.
He never signs any good free agents!!!! O wait.
Well he still sucks at managing entry level contracts and....and...well he......
...I mean Steve fucking Ott? Srsly?
OK fine LGRW!
