Leaders and Breasts: Michigan to don adidas Pink gear

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The WD equipment update with a special edition.

Since 2010 Michigan has been wearing pink gear for breast cancer awareness month.

This year they will be wearing gloves, wristbands AND their socks will feature pink for the first time ever.

Coaches gear-

In other equipment news, the UTL III gloves are up for sale now.

Nothing against the color pink, but it's going to be a little comical with the season we've had strolling into a rivalry game wearing that. Or maybe it's just funny in my head.

Yeah, it is.  Bu it's for Breast Cancer research, so any insults hurled at them are essentially hurled at breast cancer research...and you don't want to be that guy.  So as far as wearing pink in an away game in a hostile environment that's a presumed massacre, this should earn a pass.

But couldnt we just do this for Indiana? I get that its for a good cause but wearing pink in a rivalry game that is arguably the most important game of the year is dumb dumb dumb dumb. Addidas and the AD are trying to sell shit and using breast cancer as a platform....Pretty sure I would donate in order to not have our team and coaches in pink lined gear.

It's not for breast cancer research. It's for breast cancer awareness. Remember how the Livestrong foundation used all proceeds to advertise for their own organization, which they justified by saying that awareness of their organization is equivalent to awareness of the causes they supposedly support? That's what's happening here.

(I'm sure they do donate a tiny amount to actual research for the purpose of avoiding this criticism, but I think we're smarter than that)

True - most of it goes to "awareness" and sometimes that is a vague term that means advertising for more advertising, but in a lot of instances there are beneficial "awareness" activities that can help.

For example, "awareness" activities includes education, which includes getting more information out to the public about BRCA1 and 2 genes (among others) and their impact on the likelihood of breast and ovarian cancer in some women.

The more people who have more education on these issues may get genetic tests, and then may have preventative screenings covered by their insurance, and reduce the risk of or avoid cancer.

You touch on a soft spot for me - my wife is BRCA2 positive - and we primarily learned about the possibility of genetic counseling, testing, etc., through education pieces at least partly funded through "awareness" activities.

Not all "awareness" activities are equal, and I'm sure there are pieces I would complain about, but some of the dollars may be doing good, so you won't see me raising a stink.

I'm pretty cynical with respect to these 'pink' uniforms that keep getting pulled out. Seems to me like teams/franchises are using breast cancer to sell more jerseys.

Reportedly, only 8% of the money from the NFL's breast cancer gear actually goes to research. I imagine it's not too far off for the college stuff. Raising money is great, but it annoys me that all these people selling gear seem to be using cancer research to make money. If they actually cared the number would be a lot higher than 8%.

If you're concerned about finding a cure, I'd just give cash straight to whatever organization you see fit.

I wholeheartedly agree with your last sentence. But at the same time, 0% of a regular Michigan jersey goes to research, so...

I can see if you're buying it thinking 100% of proceeds goes to research there is an issue, but if you're aware of this, and still wanting to buy the jersey, I don't see how that's an issue.

That's fair - I think they need to be more transparent about the amount donated from purchases. In general. I think that's something all these campaigns are really bad about. I get that this could quickly be a slippery slope for every cause imaginable, I'm just having a tough time finding some "harm" here other than people not liking pink jerseys.

but there are many, many causes that jersey sales dont go towards. why do jerseys need to be ruined for an entire month? so we all feel good inside? just donate money if you actually care. this whole act is so played out. most of the players arent thinking about breast cancer awareness and all the good they are doing, they are thinking about how sick they look in pink gear lol

Right, but nobody is suggesting the players playing the game are actually thinking about it during the game... I get it's played out, I get it isn't as good as donating money, but what's he harm? Our jerseys are pink for a bit? Is that seriously horrible? Again if it's 5 cents and pink jerseies for a month or zero cents I'll suck it up. Don't buy them if you don't like them.

This pink stuff is getting extremely old. I'm tired of it. I seriously can't stand it anymore. I hate cancer and it can fuck off. But I wish sports would get rid of it.

I hate this pink thing....and the excessive pandering it represents. October-pink, November-camo for military in the NFL.  Let us just watch football!

If you must do this crap, how about, ya know, doing something male health related, since this is a sport played by, and watched primarily by, males?  Mental health, prostate cancer, heart disease, depression, take your pick. We live 5 years less than females after all, but no one cares about men and their health.

So men are going to beating the snot out of each other Saturday, risking their short and long term health, while wearing bright pink? Russian men, my grandfather, his grandfather, etc would never stand for this BS.

I hate it.

I really wish pancreatic cancer would get as much attention as breast cancer, make that other cancers in general that are just as deadly if not deadlier... meh.

this is the comment: "Welcome to the (ongoing) feminization of America."

and yes, it is stupid.

It's the kind of drivel you get from certain major "news" outlets.

And it's also the kind of thing that implicitly puts down women -- is "feminization" bad inherently? should we "masculinize" the country more, because being "masculine" is better than being "feminine"? How asinine.

I guess we are supposed to feel all warm and fuzzy that the football team is supporting awareness for a horrible disease.

Is it possible to find other ways? How much of the proceeds from ticket prices are going to breast cancer research?

This is a dreaded disease that has claimed many lives but this type of slacktivism makes people feel good about themselves without really doing something that will make a dramatic impact in helping the cause.

A better proposal would be to host a fund raising competition between those who don't want the players to wear pink vs those who do. Raise funds for both sides. The winner will determine the uniforms and all money goes toward breast cancer research. As an added bonus the athletic departments can match what the participants raise! Any chance of this proposal being adopted?

I am so tired of this pink shit. How about they take the money it cost to make that gear and instead donate THAT to charities? This is so dumb.

I have no problem with this IF the University and Addias announce that they will donate 100% of their proceeds from any sales of this gear to breast cancer (or any other cancer for that matter) treatment and research.

Other than that, they are just using cancer awarness to make more money.

Pink equipment for breast cancer awareness is football's ice bucket challenge. It's mostly about show, but at the same time it ultimately does spread the message and some money trickles down (a small percentage) towards research (at least in the NFL's case  that's 70% of 5% of - Link).

It'd be better if more money went to research, it'd be better if it wasn't tied in with marketing products to sell you, it'd be better if I didn't feel that companies try to take advantage of it to look like they have "corporate responsibility", it'd be better if it wasn't messing with classic uniforms, but at the end of the day, I'm willing to accept UM having some pink out there to get some money in the pockets of awareness and research. Because to me on this issue $1 is better than $0.
