missed FTs to a baseball player dropping a foul ball?  Because that seems like the only mistake they made here.

I think that's fair but dropping a foul ball is a really unlikely event in baseball.  And while yes, his missing both FTs was pretty unlikely (but still above 10%), he still shot better than his season avg in the game, so if you think those missed FTs were unlucky, you'd have to admit he was similarly "lucky" to have made 9/10 to give them the lead at that point.

And then we had shot 7-29 from three (mostly open shots) to that point.  So it'd be like your baseball team (the one that was kept alive by the dropped foul ball) making contact at a high rate during the game only to fly out on an unlucky number of at-bats.

Does the pitcher get credit in those cases?  Conventional wisdom gives it to him, but if you're not striking guys out and you're giving up fly balls, you're mostly being lucky if fewer than 8% of fly balls are going out for HRs.  And similarly if a team is hitting a lot of fly balls that get caught, they're not necessarily hitting poorly, they're getting unlucky.

Well, they were lucky we didn't hit more threes, too.  And yes, we were super lucky to hit that shot but I don't think we were the luckier team overall.

My analogy had more to do with the game/tournament then the free throws specifically.  The at-bat gets to continue and the hitter gets another chance to knock his teammates in for a score. Similarly, MIchigan got away with one - they should've been eliminated. But their season lives on and they get another chance at glory.

But, if you think about it, missed FTs by your opponent are a lot like a dropped pop-up. It's an unforced error by them and its something you have absolutely no control over. Michigan can't do anything about it at that point, they can just hope he misses. That's luck.

I just want Michigan to make the most of it now.

Dropping a foul ball is a 1/100 event or worse. Davis is a 60% free throw shooter, so the odds he would miss both were 36%. It was lucky for Houston that MAAR missed the previous layup layup and Matthews missed a tip in before that. The odds for Michigan were extremely low when Davis stepped to the line, but the fact that they got to that point involved a lot of good fortune for Houston. Plus, Jordan Poole has made that exact shot twice before this... Houston actually played good defense and contested it. Hard to call that luck.

Yes, but the odds of them missing both free throws are still a bit low, but combine that with the odds of Michigan going the length of the court and Poole hitting a somewhat harried, deep three. That's not looking good for Michigan. I haven't seen the win-probability chart yet but I bet it skyrockets when Matthews misses the tip-in and fouls on the rebound and Houston is headed to the line.  Even after the missed FTs, its still unlikely Michigan would win the game. They lucked out.

Is Michigan the better team? I would say so. But there's an argument to be made that they didn't deserve to win that game. And that happens - that's just the way sports are. Sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don't.

This fanbase has frequently acknowledged luck, particularly its bad luck when it comes to QB injuries, getting boned by the refs/bad calls, Purdue shooting the lights out in our best game, and general odd happenstances.  When we get some good luck, we should acknowledge it.

We acknowledge good luck just fine.  There was some good luck involved in that Poole had a chance to get a good look on the shot, and that it went in.

But personally, I think you're giving too much credit to Houston by arguing that Michigan didn't 'deserve' to win.  Michigan was in position to win, just as Houston was, with 3.6 seconds left.  How the teams got there is irrelevent - they were both in position to win.  Houston could have played better defense, and Michigan could not have played better offense, in those last seconds.  In an even game to that point (check the stats), Michigan outplayed them in that last possession - which is what the game came down to.

The game came to one last possession, why?  Was it because Houston wasn't good enough to pull away from Michigan, or because Michigan wasn't good enough to pull away from Houston?  Was it because Houston couldn't hit the last few free throws?  Or maybe becuase Michigan missed it's last 5 shot attempts?

Doesn't matter.  It came down to one last possession - that Michigan clearly won.

His team lost to one of the worst "versions" of a team our team has floored all season in terms of shooting and turn overs and he doesn't think the best team won?  Let's play them 10 more times and see who wins the most.

Someone shut Sampson up.

The game was back n forth the entire game. Both lead by a max of 6 points.

Came down to the wire and we drove a stake in your Cougar heart.

Get over it. Have some dignity Sampson you look like a crybaby.

has to say.  He got fired for cheating from two different programs.  So, he has no credibility.  Plus, he can't take losing like a man and has to spout his sour grapes to the media.  He can go piss off.

He's a cheater that put two programs on probation and had a 5-year show cause penalty.  He's part of the problem, so I couldn't care less what that "coach" thinks.

I never begrudge someone for being a bad loser in the NCAAs. Its the mostpainful tournament in sports, and that loss was brutal. I was going to be a salty bitch if we lost.

what Kelvin Sampson thinks. I do know that classy coach B would never air quotes like that had the tables been turned, but I guess that's obvious.

I hear ya - I was of course fixated on Gray until I was hearing "Kelvin Samspon" a few times.  When I realized whom they were talking about, I was dumbfounded, for numerous reasons.  My anger/angst/irritation with the game increased exponentially after my discovery of who Houston's coach was.

My glee was immense at victory, and then, I was able to justify placing all my disgust with Houston squarely on Sampson after this little petty reaction by him and the awesome tweet from Gray.

Houston had that game locked up if they wanted. So maybe they should have won. But the better team certainly won. Without little man bun there that team is pretty crusty.

gave their very best and last ounce of effort. They could have won by putting the game out of reach at the free throw line, and failed. I was preparing myself mentally for a loss, and then hope emerged, and it was rewarded by excellent execution of a solid inbounds play that the Houston coach failed to defend properly with his guys on the floor. So, who do you blame, yourself? The officials? They gave you the oportunity to win and your guy failed to come through. So, who was the better team when it came to final execution, and making a play to win? Guess, you gotta say the Wolverines just made one better play and that's how it goes.

Whether that means your team was better that night, the result says otherwise, and ultimately you have to accept responsibility for the outcome that you had a chance to influence and failed when that opportunity was there.

Just frustrated that he lost. Can’t blame him as Houston did look like they were having a better night, but overall “better team?” Not even close. One great players against a team of several great players will lose 90 out of 100 times.

We should be worrying that other Texas team we have to play Thursday and studying their famous “Twelfth Man” tradition we have heard about all these years...... How are we gonna be able to fast break with 17 players on the court?

except as it applies to seasoning food or sailors who have been out to sea for extended periods of time without a shower.  Any other use is kind of dumb.  So many better words to describe Coach Sampson as a dick.  Yeah.  That one.  Dick.
