Gard gets $10,000 and no suspension and Krabbenhoft is getting no discipline at all.  Krabbenhoft and Howard and 1 and 1a in terms of most culpable, so that's pretty egregious both from the conference and from Wisconsin.

I'm not going to lie, 5 games is pretty light but when put into perspective it's relatively harsh compared to other suspensions coaches have gotten for arguably worse things when context comes into play.

I hope there's a mandate from Warde to Juwan on taking anger management courses. I'm not saying he has to be John Beilein nice, but clearly there is a pattern here and Juwan needs to learn some better coping skills.

I think it would serve him well.

I can not believe the Wisconsin assistant didn’t get at least one game.

Juwan also got the highest fine in B1G history at 40K. Rumors he will be pay it “Straight cash homie”

Seems fair to me.

Now how about that Wisconsin coach that put his hands on a player? We just gonna let that go, Bucky?

Also, if you quoted Stephen A Smith here or anywhere else, you need to do some serious reflection and ask yourself how you got to be so tone deaf.

Krabbenhoft got nothing!?

Absolute disgrace.

I stand by my earlier comment that Warde should do nothing.

no punishment at all to anyone on Wisconsin. What a joke.

None of this would’ve happened if the coaches were wearing suits like they used to. A lot more tempting to throw bows in ath leisure.

Im betwixed...On the one hand Im mad because his actions may end up costing us a chance to get into the tournament...We were pretty close but I fear thats all gone now...on the other hand Wisconsin is DIRTY and Davidson is DIRTY AND Gard initiated the whole thing by grabbing JH  and Wisc assistants were agitators so me thinks they kinda deserved it...What a Disaster this season has been

In a public setting, Gard might've gotten his jaw rearranged. Should be suspended as well for attempting to manhandle and  impede the traffic of an adult who was clearly trying to go about his business and walk past him. Entitled fool, JH isn't your child.

I'm not surprised by any of this.  A bit surprised Gard was fined.

This was all about putting Juwan Howard in his place and teach him a lesson.

The fact that 0 Wisconsin coaches were suspended despite contributing just as much to the overall ruckus, including one tackling a Michigan player, is a joke. The fact that TWill and Diabate will be suspended for the same amount of time as the Wisconsin player who sucker punched them is an abomination.

Big picture: I see a dude (Juwan) who moments prior had a frustrating moment, after a frustrating end to a game, in the stretch run of a frustrating season that has fallen short of expectations.

I see his actions as not just about what happened in the moment. I see the burden of a disappointing season weighing on his shoulders, and we saw some frustrations that were experienced over the past several weeks come out in a singular moment.

Should not ever happen. But it's not just about the moment.

It's so easy to call for someone to get fired. Shows that you're superior and moral, with no cost to you personally. Not to mention today we seem (on all sides) awfully quick to demand the enforcement of strict and absolute punishment, with no regard for apologies, or learning opportunities, or second chances.

Is anyone suggesting that Howard is a bad person, or represents a threat to other coaches, or ... anything that would justify his firing beyond a vague sense that, somehow, if he doesn't get fired for this, we'll set a "bad example"?

Eh, this is fine. I imagine Warde Manuel has made it perfectly clear that another debacle like this and he'll have no choice but to fire him, and suggested that Howard perhaps consider counseling or other steps to avoid that.

But ... good God, are we a judgmental and sanctimonious species, these days. Nobody was hurt, no harm was done. Juwan dropped the ball, certainly, and should be penalized, certainly, but geez, the ease with which people are demanding termination, as if he's a radical threat to those poor kids or something ...

Biggest loss out of this is the fact that Michigan needs every win they can get and now you have Diabate and T Will out against a solid Rutgers team that would give Michigan another quality win. Diabate really hurts.

My two cents since replies are disabled - maizerays, if you live your life according to what steven a smith thinks, you should seriously rethink everything. Then again, if the nonsense that comes out of that dude’s mouth speaks to you, you’re probably too far gone already

I’d have no problem with the punishment if Warde didn’t bend over before getting on his knees for all of Wisconsin or if Wisconsin didn’t dictate the terms without any accountability.

That’s the most embarrassing part of all of this. Warde has no spine. None. Wisconsin instigated and arguably escalated at every junction, took no responsibility at all, then demanded swift and harsh action.

Warde needs to go. It’s not about Juwan’s punishment at this point. Maybe Gattis had a point… I know I know, too soon.

I really think some people on here should take some tome to look back and reflect on this ruling. So many of you on here were calling on him to be fired or to be suspended for the rest of the season and post season.

Now we have had a ruling from an independent body, an independent body that has never been known to give us a break in any way, shape or form, and they have concluded that 5 games was appropriate.

If you are a supposed Michigan fan, how can you reconcile this? Honestly, you shouldn’t be able to reconcile this. You should just know that you are prone to ridiculous views, and you should try to learn from it. So many holier than thou people walking around these days acting like they’ve never made a mistake before.

if Juwan can’t get the benefit of the doubt from us, who should he expect it from. Kevin Warren gave him more of a benefit of the doubt than about half the people I read on here. Let that sink in. Preposterous.

Obviously what Juwan did was wrong and he has to be better. 5 games was the right answer. Everyone stop climbing over each other to get on your damn high horses. You are weak. Weak AF.

Maizerayz, who the hell are you?? "We as Michigan, need to make sure it never happens again". That man put his hands on your head coach, and the assistant put his hands on students of the school you LOVE so much. What you need to make sure of is no one impedes a 6 10 man when his trying to avoid you.

If this team had performed up to expectations this season the response from this fan base would be totally different. Your head football coach out here looking for jobs, but we're glad to have him back. We all know what the real issue is with Juwan, and it don't have a damn thing to do with yesterday. Because you watch Izzo dress down players, and you watched Knight do for years, and no one ever said jack, except he's the General. Some people at this university never embraced the Fab Five, and this is that same fan base.

I’d love to see twill and Diabate file an assault charge against Ms. krabappel or whatever the assistants name is. Maybe hunter and the rest of the Davison victims can go after him too.

In all seriousness though, what recourse is there for the players? I feel for them.

Nothing for Krabbenhoft or Chambliss is a farce.

Warde's immediate groveling to the dirtiest program in the BIG post-incident indeed was a sickening reminder of Hoke apologizing to MSU after Bolden showed some fire on the field. pathetic

I'm so glad Juwan hasn't apologized

About what I expected, although I had thought it might extend to the BTT given that there's a decent chance we'll face Wisconsin.  That would be . . . interesting.

I'm glad the players only got a game, because they did not start this.

Some sort of anger management training should to be in the cards as well.  We can't have our coach looking to fight people every year.

Before the punishments were determined, did anyone interview Frankie Collins, Jaron Faulds and Terrance Williams II (the three Michigan players closest to Juwan Howard and Greg Gard at the beginning of the incident) to learn what each of them heard what Howard and Gard said at that time?

stephenrjking

February 21st, 2022 at 7:41 PM ^

Seems about right. Strong punishment, real potential to be competitively detrimental, but not the postseason (as some people, including me, initially thought might be involved). And I think, after 24 hours of marination, it seems about right.

The book on this will open again if Juwan gets heated at coaches or refs, unfortunately. But for now the story will be put to bed.

Krabbenhoft getting nothing for putting his hands on T-Will is absolute shit.  Grown adults shouldn't ever put their hands on players and certainly not players on the other team who were trying to diffuse the situation

The number of silly and self-righteous sons of biotches weighing in here about what a man's punishment should be as if it's some kind of scientific exercise in which they are expert is. . . ridiculous. The appropriate response is sorrow, no? Not sitting there in your infinite majesty in your splooge-stained jammies pretending you're one of the god-damned Puritan fathers. Some of you clowns need to get. a. stinking. life.

LOL, quite the partisan crowd we have. Scrolling thru and it's minus a billion for saying "more punishment" and plus a billion for the "less punishment" crowd. Echo echo echo...

I hope Juwan issues a mea culpa at some point soon. Say what you want about him getting touched or disrespected, but escalation was a major fuck up on his part. In his position, he needs to be better than that.

This comment by their AD kind of annoyed me:"The Big Ten takes pride in acting with class, and that didn't happen today," Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh said in a press conference after the game. "It's unfortunate what transpired, and I've been in contact with the league. I’ve spoken to the commissioner personally. I expect the league is going to act quickly and aggressively. We've got staff that have been affected and injured, hit in the face. It's difficult for me to compose myself in defense of our staff and our team, who did not instigate this event."

The whole event was instigated by his head coach and then escalated by an assistant. Juwan was most at fault but I don’t feel sorry for Wisky at all. Their behavior at the end with Gard and Davidson (wannabe tough guys but bailed when it was hot) telling our guys to get off the court was an attempt to continue the escalation in my opinion. Juwan is low hanging fruit here but there is definitely culpability beyond him.

I think 5 games is a slap on the wrist (pun) for this type of behavior. Actually If that's all the suspension I wish Coach Howard saved his smack for Tiny Tom. Gard and Wisconsin was not even worth it. ,🤣

Laughable

Juwan Howard is the best thing that happened to Michigan basketball since Zack Novak.

Bring some passion and energy.  Let others know, if they mess with you, they get the slap.

A man can protect himself and his players and should not apologize.

I got you Juwan.

After taking time to reflect on all that happened, I realize how unacceptable both my actions and words were, and how they affected so many. I am truly sorry," Howard said in a statement. "I am offering my sincerest apology to my players and their families, my staff, my family and the Michigan fans around the world. I would like to personally apologize to Wisconsin's assistant coach Joel Krabbenhoft and his family, too.

"Lastly, I speak a lot about being a Michigan man and representing the University of Michigan with class and pride, I did not do that, nor did I set the right example in the right way for my student-athletes. I will learn from my mistake and this mistake will never happen again."

I love Juwan's statement.  I hate how quickly many in the Michigan community were willing to throw the guy under the bus, and gloss over everything the guy has meant to Michigan for the last 30+ years.

Play for each other fellas.  Show 'em how strong the bond is you've built.  Excited for the next 5 weeks.

For any Buckeye friends / douche’s giving you crap.  Remind them of Urban and Zack Smith. Dude survived not reporting spousal abuse and still had him employed as a coach.
