JUB: Contract talks with Harbaugh are at an impasse over "what should be covered by immunity"

Submitted by FrankMurphy on January 16th, 2024 at 1:53 AM

Presumably, Bacon is referring to disagreements over the the types of adverse NCAA findings that would entitle the University to fire Harbaugh for cause or perhaps withhold certain incentives.

Take it FWIW. I don't think any of the insiders has had a great track record lately, so 'no one knows anything until we all know something' is probably not a bad rule to live by. Having said that, John U. Bacon is among the few journalists whose reporting is worth paying attention to.

A majority of the fan base did NOT want the team to move on from Baker.  Anything that says otherwise is a false narrative.

He admittedly needed to grow up a little bit, but he was beloved here (and still is).  The Browns didn't think he could win a super bowl, and they had a chance to get someone who they thought was capable of winning one.

Honest question: if the NCAA hits Harbaugh with a show cause, wouldn't he want to be let out of his contract?

I can't imagine Ono, Warde, or Harbaugh would be okay with him not coaching for a season or two.

again dude, not following your logic. give me a scenario? NCAA bans JH a few more games or kills a few scholarships or has UM remove some wins.  what does any of that have to do with Michigan protecting itself from JH going forward?  if anything, your point is 100% about trust, and thus, apparently a bad point.

"give me a scenario?"

During the unfinished investigation in to in person scouting - the NCAA discovers some significantly worse, unrelated violations and issues Harbaugh a multi-year show cause like Pruitt.

Harbaugh's contract doesn't allow him to be fired for it.

Now we're getting penalized by the NCAA for employing a coach under a show-cause, he can't coach be we're paying him $12 million per year, and we have to hire a new coach.

what does that mean?  if harbaugh is banned from playing a few more games, what does that have to do with keeping him as the anchor of the program, as has been battle tested this year?

not following your logic.  it implies that Warde fears more dirt to surface which would mean he doesn't trust JH's character, which is absurd.  JH is human, but he is a man of integrity and honesty.

All we want for Christmas this year is for Santa to give Harbaugh whatever it takes to keep in Ann Arbor.  He deserves it by winning the National Championship, 3 B1G Championships and beating Osu 3 straight years.

Yeah this is silly.
JH has proven himself a man of integrity, character, honesty and honor.
So the chance that he goes the way of Tugger or Urban or Petrino is slim to none.

Get this done Warde.  Give the guy whatever he wants. He is 100x more important to the university as a symbol of excellence in all things Michigan than anyone else on campus.  Set egos aside.

Why are we even talking about a show cause? Show cause for what? Fck outta here with that BS. He’s delaying to see what an nfl will offer will look like, that’s it. At most, the ncaa will suspend him for 3 games just to stay relevant. Both of these investigations are bs and Baker said as much.

I would love Jim to stay. With that said, he clearly wants to go to the NFL. In my opinion, the constant threat of him leaving for the NFL is killing recruiting. I know we have done a fabulous job of identifying players that are the right cultural fit from recruiting out of high school and the portal. We find guys that we can build up and will stay in the program for the most part. With that said, we miss on some of the top tier talent due to of course money (NIL), but we cant deny the uncertainty with Harbaugh doesn't turn some players away. I want Harbaugh to stay, but ultimately I want him to want to stay long term. Not year to year. U of M should be a destination job. Not a stepping stone to something else.

People forget Warde is a hard nosed negotiator and he fleeced TF out of Harbaugh on the last contract. The man knows how to wheel and deal. The guy must have went to harvard business school on negotiating- sheesh
