His position on the suspension this morning leaves something to be desired. He said that the suspension was justified based upon current "evidence" and that the Commissioner was within his rights.

An exhibit without examination is not evidence. Neither Stalions nor any higher level coach above him has been deposed. It's not just that due process wasn't completed. Due process *hasn't even begun*. The phone call with everyone but Michigan is itself a violation of due process, and the JGEC should have sanctioned the Commissioner for it. Mob mentality is not an appropriate way to run a country, a conference, a business, a school, a household—or anything at all. In the collegiate arena, they purport to lead. This was not leadership at all.

Klatt is the best. Not just superlative at his job but also a great human. I just disagree with that aspect of his commentary.

It was a court case of ESPN leaks and unnamed sources being presented as the evidence.

Our football rivals were the jury.

And before the defense started presenting their case the judge (Tiny) sentenced the defendant.

Read that all again and tell me where I am wrong and why Ono and Warde arent in front of a bunch of reporters every single day?

I wonder if he doesn't feel pressure to 'both sides' it some since he was one of Michigan's more vocal defenders last week

I'm looking forward to demanding indefinite suspensions of any teams head coaches whenever any infraction is even alleged from this point forward

Kinda. Though ... it's not like Michigan has ever disputed what Stalions was doing, and the school did suspend him immediately. We really haven't once claimed innocence on this.

I agree — that's not the same as due process, the scope of the scheme hasn't been fully revealed, and it's certainly not clear how much of an advantage the scheme gave us (if any). But ... let's at least concede that we haven't once claimed it didn't happen. I don't think it's completely unreasonable for the Big Ten to conclude that if the scheme took place this year, and we benefited from it this year, ideally a penalty should take place this year as well.

I know we want the penalty to apply sometime in the future, ideally at the beginning of a year when we don't care if Harbaugh misses some games, but let's at least acknowledge some bias on our part here as well. Doesn't mean we're wrong! But we need to start by at least acknowledging that we have a vested interest in not having what is potentially the best season in the last 25 derailed.

I'm not sure the Big Ten is bound by that same interest.

I like Klatt too, but make no mistake, he’s a Fox Sports guy first and he’s not going to crap on the Big 10. He’s always given favorable press to all of the big boys in the Big Ten, including OSU and PSU. He’s just not going to blast the Big 10 about anything because you don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Some of his points (meant to include above):

- praise for Coach Moore's decision making/play calling given what was going on in the game

- praise for O-line and offense

- praise for PSU Defense and criticism of PSU offense lack of strength/missing playmakers

- some discussion of Frames Janklin's PSU decisions and program

- thoughts on suspension and timing of it (thinks Petitti has the authority and it was something that could be done with accountability logically flowing to Harbaugh but the timing of the announcement was unfair especially to the players)

- his rationale for his top 10

- Jimbo firing

Praise for the guy that knew 'RUN' was coming and did nothing to stop it?  I mean, 5.5 YPP rushing when you run it 32 times in a row (many of them telegraphed) is not a good game!  The fact that he never instructed (or taught) his DE's to set an edge is directly responsible for all of Michigan's points.

Sure, he 'stopped' the pass game - but to what effect?  I'm not even sure that he 'stopped' it (aside from Michigan just saying 'no thanks') given that JJ was 7/8 and a DPI.  It was there if it was needed...

Not sure how that gets praised...

McCarthy completed seven passes. Four of those were for first downs, and then there was also the PI that gave them another first down. They only had 15 first downs in the entire game, 2/3 of which came on nine called pass plays, as opposed to their 42 running plays. It worked out, but it made no sense to abandon the passing game. Yes, they avoided an interception, but McCarthy has only thrown three INTs all year, and they all came in the same game. While avoiding the interception, they also avoided whatever big plays McCarthy and the receivers might have made, if given the opportunity, and also avoided doing much scoring until Franklin handed them a very short field late in the 4th quarter. Their strategy kept PSU in the game and, as lacking as PSU’s offense was, they still had athletes out there and one blown coverage or missed tackle could’ve changed the game completely.

Maybe you go 100% run game if McNamara is your QB. To do it with McCarthy as your QB wasn’t smart. They won that game, fortunately, with one hand tied behind their back.

to answer your question; any evidence I've seen has shown just the opposite; Harbaugh denied, Stalions denied, and I understood that the NCAA has said there was NO connection.  I'm sure not everyone believes there was no connection - but I've not seen it proven.  My sense was that more broadly Klatt thinks it's not a big deal and was sort of trying to strike a balance (they have the authority and makes sense to punish but timing sucked and penalized the players) perhaps in an attempt to make it go away because he's tired of hearing about it.

I think Klatt is just using the "head coach is ultimately responsible for the program." He wasn't suggesting that Harbaugh was involved.

As for if what Stalions did was used by Michigan, he was our signs guy. So yeah, we used his information. That doesn't mean that coaches knew he cheated (allegedly) to get the information.

Thank you for putting "allegedly" in quotes.  I still get frustrated when I hear that we've admitted to violating the in-person scouting rule and the only issue is the timing and degree of punishment.  Our initial response to the B1G had a specific section dedicated to the possibility that using 3rd party videographers (even if given tickets by Stallions) is not a violation - especially if no one in the program reimbursed Stallions for the tickets.  There is no "spirit" of the rule violation when sign stealing is permitted and the rule articulates the exceptions.  Any "loophole" is fair game.  Stallions may not have known it, but he may have stumbled into a huge loophole and I would never give that argument up - especially since we have evidence that other schools were using a different, and perhaps more advantageous loophole of using the other coaching staffs as advance scouts.

I enjoy listening to Klatt and Johnson, but I don't think Joel is 100% objective.  Klatt knows who butters Fox Sports' bread.  It's a 180 from ESPN who makes no ad revenue off the big ten, so they have no qualms outright attacking a team they don't make money from.

This is what sucks for Michigan.  Of course Michigan won't get a fair shot from ESECPN.  But we can't get a fair shot from "our network" either because it's aligned with the Big Ten.

We are on an island in an age when non-biased journalism simply does not exist.  And nobody is biased toward us.

I trust Klatt's opinion on football more than any of the other commentators, he really knows the game. He's absolutely a Fox company guy though, his coverage of the timing rule changes this offseason was dishonest and in my opinion shameful (didn't even mention advertising as a factor, and tried to say it was a player safety issue).

I saw Klatt after the game Saturday just walking down the street with body guards near the stadium. I was caught a little off guard and I shouted “Klatt” when he walked by.

He looked at me and was like “yep!”

I then caught up with him and he was gracious enough to take a quick picture along with other people. I have daughters at both schools currently so I was wearing M hat and PSU sweatshirt and he said “what is happening here”?

I explained and he laughed and said “yep makes sense, money at both schools”

Awesome guy. And shout out to PSU community and fans. They were amazingly nice!

They questioned Franklin and play calling but we’re so used to it they basically shrugged. Kind of felt bad for them, great people!!

Ha true! Right after he went by me he stopped for a picture with someone else so I knew he was okay with it.

And when I say bodyguards, I mean like three normal looking dudes who likely worked for Fox. I was literally walking down the street by the stadium and it was obvious he was fine with the attention.

Yeah I went two years ago (the Erick All game) and was pleasantly surprised at how friendly the PSU fans were (I had heard some horror stories about opposing fans getting messed with, having beer thrown on them).

I got heckled once by a student (I was wearing a Michigan hoodie), but even then I laughed and complimented his Big Baller Brand sweatshirt and he was like "ok you're good people".

Older fans were even friendlier.

To paraphrase:

"It's an absurd and clownish take to think this was not a test and not give Michigan credit for what happened...

It takes an incredibly disciplined play-caller for a guy to not get bored taking a profit... laying the small bet at the roullette table over and over again. Most playcallers are greedy and they want more and want it now.

Sherrone didn't get bored, he did what was best for his team.

Takes a deep and highly talented offensive line. It's not just any team adding a few OL+TEs - they have to be able to execute at the same high-level as they get into their depth. Not everyone can do this. Michigan can because their OL room is highly skilled and deep. You gotta have a talented, explosive, and REALLY tough running back room.

You gotta have a QB who is in the Heisman race and doesn't care that he isn't throwing for numbers. I have seen OCs who work to appease their star throwers. Incredible leadership and unselfishness from JJ McCarthy."

Regardless of what happens in the post-season, I sincerely believe this is the best team in college football and is the best Michigan team that has ever played in the winged helmet.

I guess Danny Kanell tweeted yesterday or Sat night that FSU's win at home against Miami was a better win than Michigan's in Happey Valley.  Dusty Dvorcek was taking Kanell to task on it this morning during their show.  Kanell is one of those "Penn St is the most overrated team in America" guys.

I agree that PSU needed to fire their OC.  They run a really weird offense.  What is with the two wideouts stacked at the top of the formation that never do anything?  I guess you can play 9 v. 11 if you want but I don't think it is particularly advisable as a strategy.

I think they are still trying to run Joe Moorhead's offense without Joe Moorhead running the show. Which to be fair, that offense was really stinking good, especially in 2017.

But it does seem like they are trying to run that offense without having someone there who actually knows how to run that offense.

My issue with the BIG position is that when you boil it down, their argument is that they can invoke the sportsmanship rule at any time and for any reason against any staff member, whether or not they engaged in any wrongdoing or not.  That cannot possibly be what the Universities thought they were agreeing to.

When I was a saxophone player back in high school I was better than most others of my age and experience. I got plenty of accolades, awards, and recognition. My technique was highly developed. Nevertheless, my "feel" for the music was not as good as the best players who were my peers and I knew it. It had a direct impact on how I approached a piece of music and I was critiqued for it.

That's James Franklin's problem in a nutshell - he has no "feel" for the game. He's relying on technique but has no instinct. He relies on analytics and over-thinks in-game situations. Of course, he's $75M richer than I am by virtue of his chosen profession, but just as I would never be among the elite saxophone players of my generation he'll never be an elite coach no matter how well he's compensated.

You are right. Franklin is a good coach, which people here will never give him credit for. But he'll never get over the top because of his lack of feel during games. That first 2 point conversion was dumb. Credit for going for it on those 4th downs midway through the game, I thought those were necessary. Not so hot on the last 4th down attempt, but if it works it looks a lot better. The second 2 point conversion I thought was dumb, and I don't care what the analytics say, you take the points so your team knows you can tie the game yet.

Penn State should keep him though, unless they KNOW they have someone better lined up. Penn State has fertile recruiting grounds unlike Nebraska, but you have to be careful with the Pelini lesson.
