JJ McCarthy donates more than $10K of NLI money to charities
A true Michigan man...
JJ has apparently started the "JJ for the Kids foundation" and based off merchandise sales to this point in his freshman season, he has arranged for donations to children's hospitals in multiple opponent B1G cities, in Ann Arbor and in his native Chicago. He will also donate $3,000 to families impacted by the Oxford High School tragedy. Looks like he is making the smiley face his trademark - always be branding!
Nice work JJ, great to see him using his platform for the greater good.

He's a good kid. Glad he's ours.

Impressive that he donated to the children's hospitals of Michigan's opponents: Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland, Nebraska, et al. That's sportsmanship!

The kid is just likeable. Between the smiley face drawn on his hand every game, to the effort he plays with, to this. He seems to have his head on straight.
Not to distract from this, but was curious what other Michigan schools have done related to this tragedy.
I've seen a bunch of MSU fans saying "he was a MSU fan and didn't even like Michigan" but I was looking around and haven't seen MSU really do or say much. A quick Google search for MSU + Oxford just mentions MSU's administration acknowledging it and offering mental health resources to MSU students. I checked Tucker's twitter page and don't see any mention of it either.
The directional schools are even further away and less related so I guess I'm not expecting much from them. Just curious.

I am a firm believer in privacy if giving to charities. Corporations too. It should be up to the entity that is contributing whether it is publicized or not. Quite frankly it is nobody's business who or what contributes to the cause of their choice.

He's a good kid. Glad he's ours.

You can say that again!

The man said, you can say that again. So I did.

(No, I'm not JJ, I just like spreading positivity, especially when it involves Michigan athletics)

We found Trevor Keegan, guys!

This is awesome. I hear he runs pretty fast also!

Setting a good example.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:48 PM ^
The pinnacle of Leaders and Best. I know a lot of people are nervous about the transfer portal for either QB, but with the way these guys carry themselves, I just don't see either of them going anywhere. They're much too selfless for that.
December 7th, 2021 at 12:39 AM ^
I agree. JJ is having FUN! No pressure. Great meaningful opportunities. What a way to ease into stardom!
And assuming Cade/JJ are both healthy next year, I see an even more expanded role.

Spring Practice is going to be interesting....

i had that exact thought. that kind of gesture seems to be tightly in line with a kid who knows he's going to get playing time, has patience, and who loves our school. i get the feeling he's not getting in any portals any time soon.
December 6th, 2021 at 11:51 PM ^
I love this. Good will breeds more good will. It also breeds trust and camaraderie. There is a very positive impact not only on the community but also with JJ's teammates.
This dude is going to be wildly successful at Michigan and in life.

Good for him!

Thanks for giving visibility to these kinds of issues. We get what we reward, encourage and celebrate, so let's celebrate JJ and hope that more of this kind of stuff follows. Nice that JH is setting the tone here with his give-back of his bonus dough. And, let's hope for lots and lots of bonus dough!!

Since I lost the posting race, I’ll add a summary of my thoughts on the dollars and cents of this.
We've been told that Michigan is doing a good job with NIL and this seems to bear that out. Even if JJ is giving 20% (would would be quite high) that means he has earned north of 50k.
Is that as much as Ewers or Young or the UT offensive line have made? No, but as Seth has repeatedly noted, those programs already have the infrastructure and we are building it from scratch.
December 7th, 2021 at 1:51 AM ^
Where did you get the 20% number?
December 7th, 2021 at 2:45 AM ^
Out of thin air. The idea wasn’t to find a precise value but to find a theoretical earnings floor. Twenty feels like a reasonably conservative estimate but I could be way off in either direction.

Harbaugh, Corum, McCarthy…
Leaders with character.
Michigan men still exist.
Go blue.
December 7th, 2021 at 12:07 AM ^
Lucky to have him as a Wolverine.
December 7th, 2021 at 12:09 AM ^
I read on this blog that Michigan was bad at NIL.
But JJ is good.
December 7th, 2021 at 2:44 AM ^
Wait until you see him as a starting QB. You can say JJ is good at that too. A star on and off the field.
December 7th, 2021 at 7:43 AM ^
That you get negged for this is quite remarkable. Whomever negged this, would you please defend your position.
December 7th, 2021 at 8:48 AM ^
My assumption would be that it is because this poster constantly doubted Cade, said this team couldn't win with Cade, and acted as if anyone who didn't want JJ in there now is an idiot.
Is it fair that he got negged for previous comments? I'll leave that up to the comment courts.
December 7th, 2021 at 9:00 AM ^
This ^^^ is the reason. I did not neg his post, but I've negged plenty of them. Nearly every word out of his mouth (fingers) is a shot at Cade. If he would stick to posts like this one, he wouldn't get negged so much. But his usual style is a backhanded slight against McNamara to promote McCarthy.
I'll agree all day long that JJ has more natural athletic ability than Cade. But there's a reason Cade has led this team to 12 wins (should've been 13 - thanks, B1G ref show) and JJ has a 'package' of a handful of plays. There is no reason to crap on Cade McNamara. None. Yet, this guy does it all day, every day in backhanded ways.
Maybe Beffeeeaver is McCarthy fam?
December 7th, 2021 at 9:37 AM ^
I'm guessing it's because this thread is primarily about the impressive young man we have in JJ McCarthy and the good things he is doing for the community and for children's hospitals.
The beav (NTTB) until very recently has been one of the louder and pushier MGoUsers all season when discussions on the board turn to our QB depth chart and chatter about replacing Cade in the starting lineup. Some folks have likely negged him at the slightest hint of this thread getting sidetracked.
December 7th, 2021 at 7:11 PM ^
We have a number of remarkable peeps on this blog.

Impressive! Not shocked by this, but still impressed. Glad he is a Wolverine
December 7th, 2021 at 12:30 AM ^
JJ is a winner!
December 7th, 2021 at 12:47 AM ^
I’m sure every team has a story like this. Or do they? CFP would be a great opportunity to highlight the selfless acts by JH, BC and JM. In a landscape that is all about the $, it would be a great story. And it would be even better if other teams have similar stories to share.
(However, IMO, Saban building a Habitat for Humanity home after each national championship doesn’t compare!)
December 7th, 2021 at 12:49 AM ^
What a great kid. Glad he is at Michigan.

5 star in life as well as in college football.
Props to you JJ.
GO BLUE!

Cade will be forever remembered as the guy who got us over the OSU hump.
JJ, I think, will be remembered as the guy who got us to the national championship. It will be hard not to play him - a lot - next year.
December 7th, 2021 at 6:27 AM ^
Good dude, lucky to have him at Michigan
December 7th, 2021 at 6:40 AM ^
He ran the money to these places personally....and quite literally, didn't he?
In all seriousness though, awesome move - glad McCarthy is a Wolverine, very glad indeed.
December 7th, 2021 at 10:10 AM ^
Did he block along the way or just run interference?
December 7th, 2021 at 7:15 AM ^
The kid has always shown maturity beyond his years. Love the generosity, love what it says about a young team leader, and really love to see that they finally have some of the crazy money generated by their participation in ‘amateur’ sports.
December 7th, 2021 at 7:35 AM ^
Winner and leader. Impressive. Inspiring. Great JJ is a Michigan Wolverine.
December 7th, 2021 at 7:40 AM ^
What a great gesture. I haven’t paid attention to the “nil” thing. How much do players profit from this and how? My son wants a Blake corum jersey for Xmas. Is there a certain brand that gives a player more? I’m all about these poor ass college kids benefitting from my purchase, if that’s how it even works. Btw, unless I buy from sketchy site, a Blake corum jersey doesn’t exist.
December 7th, 2021 at 8:18 AM ^
If you’re so inclined, you can go to mden.com and purchase a Corum #2 jersey and Blake will get a cut of the proceeds. This is the first year they’re allowing current student-athlete’s names on the back.
https://www.mden.com/product/Jordan_University_of_Michigan_Football__Na…
Go to that link, pick the RB position from the drop-down and you can select Corum specifically.
December 7th, 2021 at 9:53 AM ^
Awesome and done. I saw the 00 jersey but didn’t realize it could be customized. Thanks friend! You’ve made a 15 yr old very happy.
