JJ McCarthy Discussion Thread

Submitted by goblu330 on January 4th, 2023 at 5:30 PM

I know he had two pick sixes, and yes, ouch.  But oooeeee can JJ McCarthy rope the ball when the receiver is there.  For every horrifying moment, there was a moment that would make college-Drew Henson blush.

I really want the Harbaugh saga to end, so one way or another, whoever coaches at Michigan gets the full impact of his final year in college and not let him get away, because my man can throw.

He is going to be really, really good next year.  Better than 06 Henne good, but fast.

I am big JJ fan now and I can’t wait to see the ‘23 version.

  • JJ 2022: 64.6%, 2719 yds, 194 YPG, 8.4 Y/A, 22 TD, 5 INT, 155.0 RTG, 306 yds rushing w 5 TDS
  • Drew 2000: 60.4%, 1852 yds, 231.5 YPG, 8.5 Y/A, 16 TD, 4 INT, 152.7 RTG, 30 yds rushing w 2 TDS

The efficiency is the same, and JJ was the bigger rush threat in a different era. Henson had more yds/game and only appeared in 8 games so would have had more passing yds (3,241) and touchdowns (28) if he played 14 games. Henson had Terrell, Walker > Bell, Wilson, Johnson. Freshman Loveland and Schoonmaker > Sophomore Joppru, but TEs generally have lower ypc. Henson averaged 4 more attempts per game which equals the ypg difference.

Basically the same season and Henson (if healthy) would run more in the present era.

Yes, he threw two pick sixes. The first wasn’t a great pass, but I’d describe it as more of a great timing play by the DB. The second was very bad, as he failed to see the guy standing between him and the receiver. But even taking those two plays into account, he showed his elite talents over the last three games of the season. Only his superior arm strength allowed him to complete the short pass  that Johnson was able to turn into a touchdown against OSU. That was an amazing throw, made in the face of extreme pressure, and it turned the momentum back toward Michigan. He then kept the team in the game with his arm until they were finally able to run the ball in the second half.

He was also excellent against Purdue and then kept bringing them back against TCU, with both his arms and legs, and simply refused to quit. What he accomplished on the field during his first year as a starter was far better than merely “good.”

Are we sure he's gone after 3 years? I can see him staying for 2024. Unless he absolutely balls out with the OC's calling more pass plays in 2023, but I don't really see that happening. Maybe the scouts don't look at the stats and just see that he can make all the throws and his leadership and he's gone after 2023 idk. But I don't think its 100% certain he's gone after 2023

There is an autographed, framed JJ jersey on sale at the MDen for $1k. Is there anything to prevent Warde from giving Jim a $5M/season raise with the unspoken understanding that Jim is to buy a couple thousand of those and another thousand Donovan jerseys?

Jim’s got a big family. I bet he could give those as Christmas presents and no one would mind.

Since you're kind of dense let me try to explain this to you

This thread if it isn't deleted, which it wouldn't surprise me a bit, will end up with between 20 and 50 downvotes.

And you'll still sit here and argue that it's a good thread.

Makes me wish MLive message boards were still a thing

Wow.  Ok, you are all miserable.  I just wanted to discuss Michigan’s quarterback.  Mods, can you delete the OP.  I honestly didn’t expect this.

The worst part of this site is the weirdos who take it upon themselves to be message board police. They seem to be on the site 24/7 and think they are important enough to tell everyone when they don't like a post. Every. single. time. I wasn't a huge fan of this thread either but you do you, man.

Two things can be true: posters on the board are REALLY on one tonight and for some reason are ripping on you relentlessly for something that isn't even OT. BUT this is also a post without substance.  I think you need to share an original idea for the post to be more meaningful to people. Just sharing that you think JJ is good doesn't really add much to the discourse.

That being said, everyone probably needs to relax lol.

Nope.  Sometimes fans of a team can talk about their teams in a favorable way and have a fun conversation without needing a “scientific” study to know whether we could post a particular thought because of a rule that will be proven ridiculous in 6 months.  Instead we just talk sports.  Thanks.

I honestly couldn't follow what you were saying here, but I guess nobody thinks saying "JJ is good, gonna be better next year" is actually a fun conversation. I'd chill out about the whole thing, it's just a board post. People do real bad things in the world all the time, neither the OP nor the responses are even close to one of them.

You must be new here (checks joining date...not really), as well as a very sensitive lad, at that. It is true that some posters can be rather sharp with their critiques. However, it can also be true, and undoubtedly is here, that your post is lacking.

What makes this site so unique--or at least did at some point--is the demand for high-quality, in-depth content, whether offered by the site hosts or the readers. While the feedback above and in other posts may not be kind or subtle, its accuracy ideally drives writers to continually raise the bar.

Some posters above have backed you and your "right" to post your feelings even if, as others have noted, it belongs on mlive-like sites. Apparently many posters such as yourself would rather fight back defensively rather than take the hint and do better next time. In fact, if your belief that you are being bullied is anywhere near true, it likely stems from the hole that you insist on digging deeper and deeper. But you know what they say...you be you.

I was near the end zone of the Wilson “non” TD. That ball was beautiful.

I was also witness to the first pick 6 and that was just a guy underestimating the speed of his opponent. I’m old and it immediately brought me back to Grbac vs FSU and Terrell Buckley taking him to the house.

I came here hoping for an MGrowOld response. Maybe I'm early; maybe he really is giving up on responding to these inane posts (as he said in an earlier thread), but I remain hopeful.

I’m a fan, he can rope it, but he also had the training wheels on for great portions of the season, hopefully he takes the next step next season

Upperclassman JJ with a year of experience as a starter under his belt doesn't make the mistakes that sophomore, first-year starter JJ made in the TCU game. Kid made clutch throws all season, and even in the TCU game his overall performance was solid. He's going to be very, very good.

Pick sixes obviously happened but there is obviously some bad luck in those both being pick sixes. He is a top 10ish QB in CFB next year and has a case to be most talented in conference next year. Also, he will have a full offseason to work with WR and gel with OCs further. There is a reason we will like be ranked around #3 and he is a huge part of it.

JJ played with a lot of poise and heart.  His maturity grew a lot throughout the season.  Subtract just one of the two bad throwing decisions and that is very likely a Michigan semi-final win.  I am still sick about the lost opportunity but I am sure JJ and the Michigan program are 100X sicker.
