Jermain Crowell on the radio with Sam this morning said there is no rift with Michigan

Submitted by ldevon1 on January 27th, 2021 at 10:57 AM

For those that don't know, Crowell is the coach at Bellville HS. He sad a lot of very complimentary things about Michigan. If there was a rift, it no longer exists. Loves Mike Hart, Ron Bellamy and Shaun Nua.  When the podcast shows up, I'll post aa link. Looks like Harbaugh has spoken with Crowell, and all is well.

It doesn't matter if it was 118 years before.  The English Civil War put the stake in the heart of divine right in the United Kingdom.  Without that, the UK does not shift the power from the monarch to Parliament who in the House of Commons were elected representatives of the people.

If the power had rested with George III and not Parliament, the American Revolution may never have started and if it had, George III may not have given up like Parliament did.

I don’t know.  Parliamentary rule of England in the 1650s was basically a mess. Charles II was invited back in 1660 and Anglican supremacy was also restored.

I’d say the Glorious Revolution of 1688 was the big one.  The overthrow of James II marked a new turn away from monarchical power and laid the foundation for a lot of Enlightenment ideals.

As for the American Revolution, that originally had nothing to do with George III.  It was a dispute between the colonies and Parliament.  Only when George clearly indicated his support for Parliament did the colonies declare independence.

Do we have the Glorious Revolution without Cromwell and company showing the way forward by deposing Charles I years before?  Without Anglican supremacy do we still have Calvinists flocking to the colonies?  Without the Calvinists in the colonies, do we have a 'Presbyterian Rebellion'?

Lots of what ifs, but our notion of a democratic republic has it's roots in British history with those who fought against autocratic rule or fought for representation.

You've inspired me to try to understand it one more time.

English history in the couple hundred years before the Revolutionary War has always confused me with the similarly named rulers and figures and Great Events that take 50 years to resolve only to get undone in a day because some guy died at the exact wrong time and forgot to cross a T on some obscure document written by some obscure religious group.

And these guys conquered the world 100 years later.

Crowell is a master recruiter and has logistically done an incredible job setting up Belleville as a state power which consistently has within the top 2 or 3 talent levels in the state. He's been able to bring kids in from 5 counties and produces D-1 talent year over year.

The only hurdle left for him to overcome is winning the big game in the playoffs. He has lost in the semis three years in a row now after flying through the regular season and most of the playoffs up until that point.

Can you help a person ignorant to high school football out? How is Belleville able to bring in players from other counties? Aren't they a public school and attendance is based on where you live?

Is he convincing people to move to the Belleville district?

Wait, I'm confused...  When did 'school of choice' become a thing?  Last I heard, I believe it was Foster Loyer that the MHSSA made sit out a full year of HS sports because they said he switched schools solely to play bball at the new place.  Granted, this was several years ago - and may not have been with Loyer.  But some MSU croot had to sit out a year...

I could be wrong, but I believe the difference was Loyer transferred from one high school to another.  I do believe the MHSAA still has rules about sitting out after you do that.  However, if you go to middle school in Northville for example and when you finish 8th grade you decide to enroll in Belleville for high school, that is fine per school of choice and there is no punishment.  I am sure Belleville gets transfers as well but if you hit the pavement early and get kids to come to your high school after middle school you can pick them out from anywhere in the state.

Also, you get around transfer rules by "moving".  Example, kid goes to Canton high school his freshman year and decides he wants to go to Belleville the following year.  He does not want to sit out a year so he "moves" to his uncle's house in Belleville's school district, getting around the transfer rule.

How do you think WB got so good in the 11 years that Bellamy was there? He took full advantage of Pontiac closing pretty much all of their schools and then you had one of the Farmington schools close down...

As long as the kids could provide an address within the district and the show that whoever lived at that address had guardian ship of that kid, they could enroll at WB... the only time that a kid would have to sit out for a semester for sports before playing is if they transferred schools within the district... WB got nailed on this in 2016 when they had a kid that transferred in from OLSM...

Also, it’s an honor system (or at least it was in regard to Kithier transferring to Clarkston). So the transfer isn’t allowed to be athletically motivated. Much like the NCAA, the school’s police themselves and it takes one of the schools to call out the transfer, which almost never happens. That Clarkston brouhaha was unique in the Dakota was claiming he transferred for sports (duh) and they had accepted similar transfers to their school the year prior with nobody protesting.  On a positive note, neither of those msu players look like they’ll be competent college players, though I guess Loyer hasn’t been surfboarded for a few months, so maybe he’s improving.

So, I went to Catholic Central and heard for years about recruiting and how it was unfair, so caveat emptor.

My wife teaches in public schools. Our district is school of choice. Yes. Public schools recruit. Now, for the most part, what I've seen is just kind of a soft recruiting. I live in Traverse City and Elk Rapids puts ads on the radio saying 'Come to ER and enjoy our IB program! Our sports are excellent! Lovely school!'. They do it because more kids in the seats means more bucks in the coffers, and schools up here tend towards the State minimum per kid. They'll also do it if they think they can get talent for things like their music programs. 'Come to West! We have the musicals every year!'.

It wouldn't shock me one bit if they did it for Sports in a school of choice district.

A public school recruits five counties by showing up to little league/junior high and fr games as well as making stops by homes to tell them they can get them a scholarship by coming to our program.  Then find ways to get them enrolled cross county or the family moves into the district if they can.  There are many ways.

I'm in NKY/Cincy and the Catholic Schools and top public school programs do this and a whole lot more.
