Jamal Crawford quietly approaching 20,000 career points in the NBA
He's currently at 18,904 points in the regular season, which they count separately as the official total. We rarely ever talk about this non-Beilein NBA alum on here. He's kinda fascinating as he acts as a bridge between the hay day of Fisher's and Frieder's legendary recruits (the 3 Fab Fivers, Glen Rice, Roy Tarpley, etc) and current crop of NBA guys we're consistently putting in the league. Where do you think he falls in the greatest Michigan NBA players of all-time and does anyone think he can get there?

*18,906 points actually

In truth, I barely regard him as a Michigan alum.

I mean, he is as much as Kyrie is a Duke alum, if that matters to anyone.

Dude’s been in the league since the beginning of time.

One and done. Played for Ellerbe. Suspended 6 games for impermissible benefits? Barely touched down in Ann Arbor.

He was actually suspended for 14 games total. Got an additional 8 for (barely) exploring the NBA draft as a HS senior while committed to Mich. I think there was quite a bit of controversy in how the NCAA handled his situation and also, if I recall correctly, the University wasn't terribly supportive either.
As I recall, he was interested in returning but the NCAA forced his hand. A bit like McGary.
That said, between Ellerbe and him only playing about a half season, it's hard to consider him in the same boat as most other former players. Sure would have been great to see him play a couple full seasons even for Amaker.

He was declared permanently ineligible by the NCAA before they later reduced it to "only" a suspension for the rest of the season IF he paid back the cost of the car that his benefactor had given him. Of course he had no means of doing that, so his NBA decision was made for him.

But for that brief period of time, the headband craze was real. Crisler was a blast.
Just because something happened in the Ellerbe era doesn't mean it should be ignored out-of-hand.

He’s one of the most talented players to ever play in a Michigan uniform. But his legacy at Michigan is never going to be that big because he was only here one year and we weren’t good.
Cant believe he’s pushing 40 and still in the league. He’s found his role and excelled at it. Only 3x winner of the 6th man award.

How many non Beilein players do we have in the NBA?
August 18th, 2018 at 3:43 PM ^
Epke Udoh is currently on the Jazz. He transferred to Baylor early in the JB era.
He was the 6th overall pick in 2010 by the Warriors.
After GSW, he has played for the Bucks and Clippers, followed by a stint overseas.
August 18th, 2018 at 5:53 PM ^
Udoh played a full year (2007-08) under Beilein before transferring.

I think Crawford is it. Keep in mind, Beilein's been here 11 years now, so any non-Beilein player would be at least a 12-year NBA veteran, and there's not a ton of those in the league. (Also, we were not exactly an NBA factory under Ellerbe/Amaker.)

I’ve never even seen him repping Michigan stuff or really cheering them on. It sucks cause he has had such a great career, but I bet most nba fans wouldn’t even know where he played in college.

Not often, but he cheers for the basketball team on Twitter. I think it would be nice if he attended a game at Crisler; Brent "Air Georgia" Petway, too.

Not on my list of M players.
Barely played here, had zero impact.
August 18th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
Let's all bash him in this thread!

I was a teenager at the time he played. And although we weren't great, there weren't many players to root for at that time. I consider him a Michigan man. He played here. Not everyone has to put in 4-5 years and win a championship or make a tournament run to be considered a Michigan man. Hell, I'd consider him a Michigan man even if he didn't go here but rooted for Michigan. We shouldn't be picky about who's on that list ("Michigan men"), we should try to make it a huge list. With the exception of rapists, murderers, and douchebags, who shouldn't be included on that list regardless.

Honest to god, if I order delivery pizza, and Jamal Crawford delivered it, I’d have absolutely no idea who he was

If I recall correctly, he still roots for us and gives us a shoutout every now and then.
If MSU can claim Nick Foles (LOL), then Crawford is totally ours.
