Jalen Wilson asks for release from LOI and reopens recruitment
you may be a troll, but this picture will never stop being hilarious to me.
They really should stop publishing pictures of young adults in various stages of shock and grief for tens of millions to see.
He was at the college football award show...doing the same pose.
Hire Juwan. Keep the assistants. Bring in Jaden McDaniels. Call it a day.
Regardless of who we bring in, they will likely not have the same skill to develop the shitty athletes Beilein had to settle for. As long as they can recruit, this is fine.If he ends up at Kansas I will be very surprised.
Nice. Call a bunch of Division one athletes shitty because they aren't the most elite of the elite. You couldn't hold their jock.
Mentioned this elsewhere, but this feels like peak for Michigan hoops. Unless they are willing to play CBB the way the rest of the elite programs, they aren't going to find someone who is willing to do it clean and develop and recruit like Beilein. Those coaches simply don't exist anymore.
I think we are willing to get more dirty than Beilein was, which is virtually anyone we hire. I know for a fact we pay football players, not quite to the extent SEC or OSU does (still scared of getting caught even though everyone knows nothing will be done) so don't see why basketball would be any different
Coach K probably tried to be a little more clean and had a few average years. Now they're back to being one of the 4 or 5 preferred destinations of the McDonald's all Americans. How old is that guy anyway? He's been at it since my youth.
Yes and yet ... they are not winning the national championship, or even making the Final Four, every year. Ditto for Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona and any other dirty bird program out there.
No school is going to make Final 4’s every year...that’s an imaginary standard all will fail to live up to.
Seriously.
Beilein made the same number of title games in roughly the same number of years as Duke and Kentucky.
He’s been dead for 8 years. They keep spray painting his head and puppeteer him around a la Weekend at Bernie’s.
814 East U is my pick for the next AD!!!!
not unexpected
if this process is gonna take a month per wtka roundtable this morning, i'd buckle up
It was a little more unexpected since Yak is still on the staff
crystal balls started moving for wilson and bajema earlier this week and sam didnt shoot down this possibility, so to me it was a matter of time unless they made a quick home run hire. players report in a month
It shouldn't take more than 2 weeks if Warde actually had a short list in advanced.
Unless the guys on that short list have already turned down the job.
Good buckle or bad buckle?
A 2019 recruit is not going to want to wait a month at this stage. Smart move by Wilson.
Dang this entire offseason is just gonna be terrible isn’t it?
I think it's fair to say the program is bound to take a step back in the short run. It will likely take a year to get to a new normal.
You’re probably right, thank you for the sanity
I wouldn't be suprised if it takes 2 maybe 3 seasons to right the ship.
Yeah a year is super optimistic. Get ready for some significantly-less-awesome-than-usual basketball.
The good news is that the football team is now energetically bound to absorb the winning powers that the basketball team will lose this year.
CFB Champs 2019+2020. Mark it!
I'm personally prepared for Michigan basketball to not reach these levels again for 10-20 years. If we're unwilling to get our hands dirty, then I don't think another John Beilein is walking through the door.
yes..and lets be honest, stings to say but sparty gonna walk away with B1G next year.
Unfortunate, but somewhat expected given the circumstances. I still think it is more important to make the right hire than to try to hire someone this week to try to keep the recruiting class together.
I do feel bad for Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske though. It will be their senior year next year, and this team is going to be undermanned.
Thank you for this post.
X and Teske should be appreciated for staying and course being 'Draft Dodgers'........
I love how it has to be announced on Twitter. Gotta love today's kids. :/
Where else should he announce it?
MySpace.
Uh, just ask the coaches.
Garbage take. Would you rather reporters announce it on twitter, or yourself? This way he gets to get his piece out--thanking the people, etc--before things go haywire.
It makes perfect sense to me.
How about like the old days when people didn't feel the need to announce every time they took a shit?
How about the old days when the decisions of 18-year-old kids weren't subjected to hundreds of abusive messages on social media and spittle-flecked vitriol on talk radio?
Garbage?...aren't you a church pastor? Yikes :/
Here's what I don't like about it...announcing it. You are asking for your release from a coach/school. Just ask the coach/school. It screams either:
a)I'm using my following as leverage to pressure the school to give me what I want.
OR
b)look at me. I want attention.
I'm not a fan of either.
If his intent is to thank folks, get your release first, keep it in house and respectful, then thank folks and announce you're opening up your recruitment afterwards so everyone knows. I think that small change makes a big difference.
Should the kid call up your favorite reporter and ask them to write an article explaining why he's changing his mind?
We'll get off your lawn while you try to come up with an answer that doesn't make you look like an ass.
IMO this is the problem with this generation. They want validation for everything. This does not need to be announced. He should call the coach directly and have a conversation with him. Then, when granted make your social media announcement that you would like to thank them, open up your recruitment, etc if you want. This is a more respectful and direct way to handle it. But, you don't need to announce that your asking for your release IMO. It does not require any reporting.
As they say, Username checks out.
You should tweet him and tell him yourself.
Anyone that Tweets and is not required to for their job should reconsider. One day years from now people will look back and wonder why we ever used social media to announce what we do for the world to judge.
welp, guess we saw that one coming.
1. It is not reasonable to expect a coaching hire to be made in this short of a time period.
2. It is reasonable to expect that the coaching hire be expedient to head this stuff off and to give Michigan a fighting chance to re-recruit Wilson (and perhaps other decommits).
This is the process, and the process matters. You don't want to hire the wrong guy, but you don't want to take a month to hire the right guy, either.
If Warde hires, say, Juwan Howard four weeks from now and Wilson and (say) Bajema are already signed somewhere else, that's bad.
I don't think any hire was going to change this result though so why rush the hire this week if they aren't ready?
One of his best friends, RJ Hampton, reclassified to 2019 this month, and it looks like Jalen Wilson will be going with him to Kansas. I don't think there is any hire Michigan could have made that would have changed that. It's possible if Wilson had that information prior to making his original commitment that he doesn't even commit to Beilein and Michigan.
They need to get it done faster than a month for next year's recruiting class, but I think taking a week or two to make this hire is reasonable.
