Ja'Marr Chase Commit (rumor)

Submitted by Pompano Jack on

It is rumored that Ja"Marr Chase, a receiver out of Rummel has committed to Michigan.  Heard it from a High School coach who coaches in the area.  He is a 4* wide receiver near New Orleans.  Recently decommitted from Florida.  Visited for the game.

247 Sports doesn't have on single College Football Insider recently giving a crystal ball to Michigan. One would think, If this were true, at least 1-3 insiders would reflect such in a crystal ball. Hoping that this is going to be a pleasant surprise.

From a program standpoint, Texas was very close where Michigan was. I actually think Michigan was alot closer to being a has been. However, the current roster when both coaches took over were simular. Got athletic kids that will be good with coaching, but they got in the bad habit of not knowing how to play together and win games. I think Herman will get them back to competing for titles there, but that is what a year one rebuild is supposed to look like. People need to look at Texas when they want to say going 10-3 the the first few years under harbaugh was not impressive.

every sack on one of the OLinemen.  Yeah, it is a portion of the time.  And yes, our OL can certainly improve in pass pro.  But, how about the RB or FB not f-ing up as much as they did picking up a blitzing defender or making a half-assed effort at a block?  Or how about the QB not holding onto the ball for an eternity or not reading the blitz properly?  Or maybe the refs could start flagging over-aggressive sacks more - like the two that knocked out Speight and Peters.  Besides, even if we had a great, inexperienced line, sacks are still going to happen.

c'mon man!  Is this a serious response? "Brian covered it."  Lol

Michigan is surveying the college landscape for OL grad transfers. Why? Because we are dangerously thin at the position.  Jake Rudock "wasn't likely to play at original college" either so why would we assume he would start right away or even scratch the 2 deep?  I guess we shouldn't have taken him.  Nice logic.  Kids transfer for all kinds of reasons and Michigan desperately needs help at OT.  That's why. It's likely to happen, no matter what Brian says.

There's a considerable difference between the QB position where only one can be on the field at one time and the offensive line where five guys play at once.  The reasoning given is solid and logical.  Most people transfer for playing time reasons.  So if someone who wasn't going to play much at his current school what makes you think he's instantly going to be an impact at Michigan?  Obviously there are exceptions and Michigan will probably kick all the available tires but IMO being skeptical of finding an impact grad transfer OL is very much a logical viewpoint.

Have you seen our 2 deep either for numbers or quality of players? We have a need for more bodies and any upperclassmen who see they aren't going to go to NFL but have a path to an advanced degree should be smart enough to kick the tires here.

Backups at Stanford, Northwestern, etc would probably prove to be accretive to the program if they were to come here and they would help resolve a short term deficiency that is plauging us for some time now.

Just guessing here...but maybe because we watched our Oline get two of our QBs killed this year and we don't want it to happen again next year?

This is going to be the hot topic all offseason.  The rumors and guesses about the OLine and who is developing and positioned on the depth chart.  I see no way of stiffling the speculation until we see the 2018 wolverines.  Maybe if the OLines look dominant in the Spring game, but I suspect it won't be until September before we really see what we have.

Qbs are going to take hits even if they have great olines. Both of the hits that hurt the QB were missed penelties. Speight was sitting on his butt on the ground when a dlineman decided it was ok to not pull up and tackle his neck. The peters one featured a lb make contact after the ball was thrown and pull up on Peters hips and drive him into the ground. Then keep driving his feet after. The first play was a late hit and targeting, the second was unnecessary roughness. Never qb get hurt if these guys don't do these things.

247 has both of them as 4 star tackle prospects... Mayfield the 100th ranked prospect, #8 OT, #1 player in state of Michigan with Hayes number 122 overall, 12th ranked OT, #3 in state.

Rivals though has Mayfield unranked and only 20th best in state with an underwhelming list of offers including UM, MSU, Iowa, and Pitt.

Rivals has Hayes the 51st best OT, #16 in state, and offers from UM, MSU, Northwestern, ND, and TCU.

So there's some variance in terms of how these two are ranked nationally. Greg Frey has a decent track record recruiting and developing OTs though, so we'll see. Either way, I think it's safe to assume that these discrepancies can mean that neither is going to compete for a starting job in 2018.

Chase is 25th nationally according to 247 and Rivals has him 50th.

is not the case.  Signs point to Newsome returning, Stueber, Filagia, and Honigford are coming off of redshirts and all project to tackle.  We also have two four star tackle commits on the 2018 class.  Reports of our demise at offensive tackle are greatly exagerated.  We had a trap year here with a ton of talented freshman at the position who are not ready to play yet.  That is why the Newsome injury was so debilitating.  Not because Newsome is necessarily some kind of All-American but because he was a good experienced and experienced tackle.  You could not have hand picked a worse injury to have occurred for Michigan, both for last year and this year.

Yes thank you for pointing out that we recruited a ton of OT last year and redshirted them. Also, James Hudson switched from defense to offense and projects to be a tackle. We won't have any experience unless Newsome comes back healthy, but Harbaugh is most certainly trying to build depth on the offensive line. That takes time. Also, Sam Webb pointed out earlier this year that Filiaga practiced a lot at the guard position this year so he may not end up being a tackle.

what signs??... Newsome struggling, laboring to run 40 yards?

If Newsome comes back to contribute, great... but you can't base your OL plan on that... hope is not a plan...

Heck, if he manages to walk normally would be a plus.

Michigan has some bullets in the chamber. I'll wait on Filagia, I think he likely ends up at OG but they could try to reshape his body a bit to help him move better on the edge. But Hudson, Stueber, and Honigford will all battle at OT. While Ulizio and Runyon didn't look great or play at RT, they were also still underclassmen and may be serviceable with another year of work if needed. JBB showed some signs of improvement, maybe more reps improve the mental side of the game, and maybe improved pass pro from the RBs and TEs can help him more. Newsome has a chance to come back. And then the year after that you have Hayes and Mayfield. I know people want all the OTs, but Michigan has dedicated a lot to that position, and 2019 guys aren't helping for a few more years.
