I can't figure out our recruiting this year.
I don't care that much about rankings, but where are the big name Tackles? You could play tomorrow.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:24 AM ^
Ryan Hayes and Jaylen Mayfield are our tackles. We're going after Nicholas Petit Frere who is a pretty big name and maybe one more beyond that. There are no tackles that are going to come in and play immediately but the more numbers we have the better.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:26 AM ^
Fair enough. Its clear Harbaugh went with athleticism at the tackle spot. Intrigued to see how they look after a couple years.
Second question: How is Texas still getting a number 2 class (rhetorical question)?
November 27th, 2017 at 11:11 AM ^
the pre-game smooches from the coach are a more important recruiting point with the kids, now a days....

I'm hoping for Richard Gouraige and maybe Dunlap to flip from the Gators also!!

would be great to pick-up an experienced grad transfer tackle ?!
November 27th, 2017 at 10:31 AM ^
If an O-lineman is transferring, it cause he wasn’t likely to play at original college. So why would he assume to start right away here or even scratch the 2 deep?
November 27th, 2017 at 10:34 AM ^
He appears to be correct so far. But what if the grad transfer could crack Michigan's current 2-deep? (Assuming there's a grad transfer with mutual interest).
November 27th, 2017 at 10:48 AM ^
I feel like a firm-handshake-from-Bama guy could probably crack our OT 2-deep, if such a person exists.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:21 AM ^
They don't.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:06 AM ^
lets be honest here
#1 don't get your QB killed
November 27th, 2017 at 1:04 PM ^
every sack on one of the OLinemen. Yeah, it is a portion of the time. And yes, our OL can certainly improve in pass pro. But, how about the RB or FB not f-ing up as much as they did picking up a blitzing defender or making a half-assed effort at a block? Or how about the QB not holding onto the ball for an eternity or not reading the blitz properly? Or maybe the refs could start flagging over-aggressive sacks more - like the two that knocked out Speight and Peters. Besides, even if we had a great, inexperienced line, sacks are still going to happen.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:52 AM ^
I get this thinking for top P5 schools, but I would think there would be some decent grad transfer OL from MAC, AAC, etc. that potentially out performed their recruiting and would jump at the chance to play at and get a free education at UM.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:52 AM ^
c'mon man! Is this a serious response? "Brian covered it." Lol
Michigan is surveying the college landscape for OL grad transfers. Why? Because we are dangerously thin at the position. Jake Rudock "wasn't likely to play at original college" either so why would we assume he would start right away or even scratch the 2 deep? I guess we shouldn't have taken him. Nice logic. Kids transfer for all kinds of reasons and Michigan desperately needs help at OT. That's why. It's likely to happen, no matter what Brian says.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:02 AM ^
There's a considerable difference between the QB position where only one can be on the field at one time and the offensive line where five guys play at once. The reasoning given is solid and logical. Most people transfer for playing time reasons. So if someone who wasn't going to play much at his current school what makes you think he's instantly going to be an impact at Michigan? Obviously there are exceptions and Michigan will probably kick all the available tires but IMO being skeptical of finding an impact grad transfer OL is very much a logical viewpoint.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:19 AM ^
Have you seen our 2 deep either for numbers or quality of players? We have a need for more bodies and any upperclassmen who see they aren't going to go to NFL but have a path to an advanced degree should be smart enough to kick the tires here.
Backups at Stanford, Northwestern, etc would probably prove to be accretive to the program if they were to come here and they would help resolve a short term deficiency that is plauging us for some time now.
November 27th, 2017 at 12:29 PM ^
You taught me a new word - accretive. Logged in to tell you that.

November 27th, 2017 at 11:09 AM ^
Why? Because our two deep is not great, Bob.
I'm fairly certain there are schools where an upper class OL, who isn't NFL potential but wants an advanced degree, could come here and beat out some of our 2 deep players. And we need depth...Brian isn't 100% correct with every idea he puts out there, man.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:42 AM ^
Jesus, our two-deep is fine, Bob. They're just young since we recruited a bunch of kids who red-shirted. Why do some of y'all want to see doom-and-gloom in everything?
November 27th, 2017 at 11:48 AM ^
Just guessing here...but maybe because we watched our Oline get two of our QBs killed this year and we don't want it to happen again next year?
This is going to be the hot topic all offseason. The rumors and guesses about the OLine and who is developing and positioned on the depth chart. I see no way of stiffling the speculation until we see the 2018 wolverines. Maybe if the OLines look dominant in the Spring game, but I suspect it won't be until September before we really see what we have.

247 has both of them as 4 star tackle prospects... Mayfield the 100th ranked prospect, #8 OT, #1 player in state of Michigan with Hayes number 122 overall, 12th ranked OT, #3 in state.
Rivals though has Mayfield unranked and only 20th best in state with an underwhelming list of offers including UM, MSU, Iowa, and Pitt.
Rivals has Hayes the 51st best OT, #16 in state, and offers from UM, MSU, Northwestern, ND, and TCU.
So there's some variance in terms of how these two are ranked nationally. Greg Frey has a decent track record recruiting and developing OTs though, so we'll see. Either way, I think it's safe to assume that these discrepancies can mean that neither is going to compete for a starting job in 2018.
Chase is 25th nationally according to 247 and Rivals has him 50th.

Forget it, Jake. It's crootin'.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:28 AM ^
is not the case. Signs point to Newsome returning, Stueber, Filagia, and Honigford are coming off of redshirts and all project to tackle. We also have two four star tackle commits on the 2018 class. Reports of our demise at offensive tackle are greatly exagerated. We had a trap year here with a ton of talented freshman at the position who are not ready to play yet. That is why the Newsome injury was so debilitating. Not because Newsome is necessarily some kind of All-American but because he was a good experienced and experienced tackle. You could not have hand picked a worse injury to have occurred for Michigan, both for last year and this year.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:30 AM ^
but your point stands.

November 27th, 2017 at 11:11 AM ^
what signs??... Newsome struggling, laboring to run 40 yards?
If Newsome comes back to contribute, great... but you can't base your OL plan on that... hope is not a plan...
Heck, if he manages to walk normally would be a plus.

Michigan has some bullets in the chamber. I'll wait on Filagia, I think he likely ends up at OG but they could try to reshape his body a bit to help him move better on the edge. But Hudson, Stueber, and Honigford will all battle at OT. While Ulizio and Runyon didn't look great or play at RT, they were also still underclassmen and may be serviceable with another year of work if needed. JBB showed some signs of improvement, maybe more reps improve the mental side of the game, and maybe improved pass pro from the RBs and TEs can help him more. Newsome has a chance to come back. And then the year after that you have Hayes and Mayfield. I know people want all the OTs, but Michigan has dedicated a lot to that position, and 2019 guys aren't helping for a few more years.

Well that would be nice. Interesting that he would choose Michigan after how many WRs we took in last year's class.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:26 AM ^
I'd love to get to the point where high level recruits see that there is a logjam at their position and still want to come to Michigan because it means they get the chance to be at and potentially play at Michigan.
