Isaiah Barnes to enter the transfer portal
To what may be a crazy off season (hopefully not 'that' crazy)....

I mean...Jace plays with great effort, generally knows where he should be on defense, and hit 41% of his threes this year. By comparison, Barnes looked completely lost on offense and defense every time he was on the floor.
Shhh. Don’t ruin his false narrative
Also, they don't play the same position...
Interesting posting history (in particular, today) U-M4ever.
Very interesting. Fascinating, in fact.
I dont blame him and wish him all the best. While he wasn't going to be a huge impact this year, he did show some potential and athleticism. Maybe he could of been given a few more minutes. Juwan runs a very stubborn lineup, and doesn't belive in making many changes during the season, or even in game. Maybe he should transfer to VCU, it has worked out well for former Michigan 4 stars.
Sigh. It's going to be fun for the next six months to have every story involving Michigan basketball followed by comments taking the opportunity to attack Juwan Howard. Because the authors are somehow sure the rest of us don't yet understand how angry they are, or how justified their anger is.
Pure positivity, we are.
19-15 and 18-16 will significantly decrease the positivity of even the most optimistic. The team has looked poorly coached and poorly constructed in consecutive years. If it looks that way next season...
With Baker potentially coming back we need 2 guys to exit just to bring in the freshman we already signed. We obviously need to hit the portal for a 4. So we need minimum 2 more guys to leave. Hopefully we keep atleast 2 out of Hunter Jett and Kobe. Giving everyone a potential extra year for covid was fair, but it also makes for more guys getting pushed out of programs.
personally, i would give llewelyn the firm hand shake. he's coming of a serious knee injury. who knows how healthy he will be by Nov 2023.
I'd rather give Baker the firm handshake. His FG% in conference play was 34.7%, as a 5th year senior. His conference 3pt% was worse than true freshman Dug McDaniel, who came in as a poor 3pt shooter. Baker is great at catch-and-shoot threes with his feet set but doesn't contribute anything else. Can't shoot on the move or dribble, can't score inside the arc, his FT% has fallen every year of college. He is not a ballhandler or passer, doesn't defend or rebound well. Is it worth using a scholly on someone who is not even "Just a shooter" but "Just an open standstill shooter"?
Rico I agree with you on this
I keep thinking Baker will break out of his slump any game now, and then the season is over. Toledo was nice. But frustrating because he has a nice offensive bag of tricks except he sucks at the most important part, which is making shots.
Llewelyn won’t be back to play
He wouldn’t be the only guy I’m giving firm handshakes too. But this is 2023, knee injuries with a year to rehab aren’t as threatening as they used to be. He should be very ready by then.
He probably will be back, but he was bad before he got hurt and he'll probably start off bad again since he's been injured and seem to have low confidence before that. I think him coming back is purely because we no guards, not because he gives them a significant boost.
I wish the young man young success and the best of luck. Michigan is in a position they need this scholly for the transfer portal this off-season. The portal should be huge this year.
Hopefully we can say we had subs by September
Who?
bad news barnes
I think Coach Howard missed an excellent opportunity to attempt the development of Barnes. Barnes entered the first half of the game versus Kentucky, yes that Kentucky, and promptly hit two 3 pointers. He also displayed his athleticism and ball handling in 7 minutes of play. That spurt could have been a huge confidence boost for Barnes. However, the very next game, Barnes did not play until there were 3 minutes left in the game - a 15 blowout of Minnesota.
The game after that, against lowly Lipscomb, Barnes received only garbage minutes. A game later he never left the bench in a lost to North Carolina. How discouraging was that for Barnes. The young man gave very good minutes against an always highly talented Kentucky team, and he's rewarded with more bench minutes? We don't know what Barnes could have been. We don't know what his potential was because his coach, seemingly, did not reward his effort and production. In a season where several players were simply bad for long, long stretches, an athletic, ball handling, shooting guard was ignored on the bench. The kid came to play versus Kentucky, so he definitely should have been given competitive game minutes against the likes of Minny and Lipscomb!
What's your hypothesis? Why do you suppose he was stuck on the bench?
I'm as puzzled by Coach Howard's rotations and assessments as everyone else. I'm puzzled as to why Caleb Houstan played the 2nd heaviest minutes on the team last season. I'm puzzled as to why he decided to bring in Llewellyn (a starting ball dominant pg) after Frankie closed the season so strong last year. I'm puzzled as to why he only recruited one guard last recruiting class. I'm puzzled as to why he calls inopportune timeouts. I'm puzzled as to why he calls such horrible out of timeout plays. I'm puzzled as to why he can't seem to define roles for the players.
Oh wait, I'm not puzzled. It stems from the same reason, the same thing I yelled time and time again during the hiring process. You don't give on the job training to a coach who has never coached in college, and has never been a head coach at all, at a top 15 Division I program! The things that Coach Howard isn't good at are generally worked out at lower level programs where the pressure to win, the expectations to win, are not the priority. Michigan was NOT in a rebuild, and did NOT need to take a chance on a certifiably risky hire.
EDIT - since I'm getting negged, I decided to be a little bold. LOL I give a fuck about your negs, Howard NEVER should have been hired here with his paltry resume!
Given the supposed candidates at the time (Cooley, Jordan) who would you have preferred?
Yeah, there were only a few known candidates at the time, but I preferred Ed Cooley. However, I wouldn't have been opposed to going after some of the better Mid-Major head coaches who would have been prepared for the step up. I don't have names now (that was 4 years ago), but I could come up with a few, after some research, if there was a change now.

I’ve been a Juwan fan but I basically agree with all of this
kind of tells you how bad he must have been in practice, given he could get no run at the 4 with this team.
I don't know what he did in practice, but the coach felt comfortable enough to put him in against the toughest non-conference foe they faced. And, the kid performed! Experienced coaches reward that!
Best of luck to him. This off-season looks to be pivotal for Howard and the team overall.
Best of luck to him, hope he finds success at his next destination. Felt this move was inevitable when UM announced the medical redshirt a few days ago. Preseason, I was hoping that Isaiah would take a step forward as a role player off the bench, but he never really seemed to develop and was not playable most of the year despite our depth issues. Given the roster imbalances, there is going to need to be some attrition this offseason.
Can't blame him for not wanting to stick around for Patrick Ewing 2.0
I mean, in all honesty ... not even close, right? You do know that, right?
Apparently superficial similarities are all that matter here.
You're right. To my knowledge, Patrick Ewing didn't attack anybody (twice) in the handshake line
Can we at least agree... F msu. And go Marquette?
He posted “what happens in the darkness always comes to the light” on Twitter last year and yesterday said “STILL” in reposting it. I know he was upset over Frankie leaving so I think this was inevitable. That first one came about two weeks before Frankie transferred to Arizona State. It’s almost as if he gave it one more year to see how it went but nothing changed for him so he’s going to bolt.
That was Coach Howard's most egregious error of last off season. After Frankie finished strong replacing an injured Devante Jones, Coach Howard went out and brought in a starting transfer pg! Yeah, yeah, yeah, the narrative was that Llewellyn was a "combo" guard, but he was a ball dominant, shot heavy point guard. So, even if he was a "combo", he was coming to start at either the one or the two. That is a slap in the face to either Frankie or Kobe, so one of them was definitely leaving after that. How much better would this team have been with Frankie and Dug at the point, and Kobe being backed up by a true freshman shooting guard? That would eliminate the concern of Kobe going pro, because we'd have had his backup getting minutes and learning - just like Kobe did last year. That's how the college game works. That's how you build depth - not from constantly over-recruiting the portal and stunting the development of your h.s. recruits.
VCU on line 1.
There's going to be some transfers out to clear room for portal targeting.
Not crapping on the program or being a bad fan by acknowledging the facts.
* Could lose 2 to the draft
* Could lose 2 more transfers, Baker, Llewellyn
* Could be a couple more firm handshakes.
Likely to be 4 openings after the dust settles.
More concerned about commitment level with just 2 incoming recruits. Neither one is going to be a first year BIG
I hope we all get surprised by Kobe, and maybe Hunter coming back.
Coach has got a major rebuild on his hands if everybody clears out.
Nobody is cheering for any of this, relax.
I think that’s fine. But can we all agree right now that Howard is on the hook for this departure and replacement??
I ask because when Frankie left, lots of people (me included) were like, it’s fine, he got replaced by an upgrade. But then when it looked like the departed guy was at least as good as the replacement, then the narrative became Frankie left bc he just always transfers and there was nothing Juwan could do.
So let’s just be clear now, so that if somehow Barnes is decent next year and his Ivy League replacement stinks we won’t hear about how Barnes is a “flake,” etc.
Difference is, Frankie showed something last year, Barnes didn’t. I’m not worried about this loss, the Frankie one still makes me mad. That’s on Juwan for recruiting over him. He’s done it time and time again with his point guards.
Howard is on the hook for this departure
Tell me you don't follow the team without telling me you don't follow the team.
Barnes isn't a Big Ten-caliber player. He was completely lost out there. His departure was an open secret for weeks.
I absolutely wasn’t surprised by his departure. I’d be very surprised if he was a productive player at a high level of competition. I absolutely think that this was a planned or encouraged, so I’m not sure why you think I don’t follow the team.
But I don’t wanna hear in the future about this as some event outside of Howard’s control IF somehow Barnes is playable somewhere and meanwhile the team has no depth.

I agree, my feelings on Barnes after watching him play was that of Zeb. Not a big loss. I’d encourage Llewelyn and T Will to find a home elsewhere to finish out college. Baker hasn’t been great, but think it’s worth the chance of bringing him back with his shooting potential. Everyone else you hope comes back and assume we lose a couple (including NBA). If we lose more than a couple and Juwan doesn’t make any big additions, than this won’t work out. He also needs to make changes to the staff. They aren’t getting it done two years straight.
Can we get Tschetter to to the transfer portal. It is like playing 4 vs 5 when he is in the game.
