When I was in Junior HS at Southgate Davidson, we had a mix of 7th-9th graders playing against 9th graders from high schools.  We were horrible.  We lost one game 63-9, in which we were down 50-1 at halftime.  They pressed us and we could not get the ball past half court.  The PA announcers were mocking us.  We lost another game by the score of 77-20 to Dearborn Fordson, which was an even higher margin of loss.  We sucked.

My daughter goes to a small parochial school in SW MI. She's in 7th grade but is on the 8th grade team. They played the Covert MS team and won 49-0. There are only 8 girls on our team (both 7th and 8th graders) from 5 area Lutheran schools. There's a decided drop off from the starting 5 to the 3 players on the bench, but they all got plenty of minutes. There was no pedal to the metal. They didn't press, they ran a zone, didn't guard in bounds passes, etc. What they didn't do was change the aggressive mind set that they play with. They still played defense and still ran their offense. Doing anything different can form bad habits.

This team feeds into a small parochial HS whose JV team has won 50+ games in a row.

What's the reverse side of all this, letting the other team score? Isn't that even worse?

Your team could have played man for a while.  Zones are extremely effective in middle school girls hoops, but zone doesn't teach good defense.  The other team probably had to heave up 3s all day and couldn't even get them to the hoop.  Most high schools don't play a bunch of packed in zones because the other team will hit the 3s.  To me, beating a team by that much and sitting in a zone is unsportsmanlike.  Just my opinion.  (and no, you shouldn't let them make a point on purpose).

Yeah the rule change for quarters still messes with me when I see games until I remember.

men need to switch to quarters as well...12 minute quarters.

The NCAA game should be the same 48 minutes as the pros. Especially when you consider that colleges play 30-40 games tops in a season vs the NBA’s 90+ (pre-season, regular season, playoff series).

Hell no they shouldn’t. The reason I get away with watching most of M’s BB games is because they’re short. My wife would have a cow if they extended them to 48 minutes. By fast forwarding through the commercials and foul shots, I can often get through a basketball game in like 45 minutes to an hour.

Also, long basketball games would ruin March Madness. Who would have time to catch full games? There’s a reason I, like many people, only watch the NBA during the playoffs and even then I only catch a fraction of the games.

Also, while the pros play many more games and they are longer, they’re also pros. They don’t have classes to attend and do work for. Longer games would probably also lower student section turnout because it would be a much bigger commitment. While it may seem that you’re only adding 18 minutes, with the added commercial breaks and time-outs you’re really adding like an hour or two.

Sorry for the extra wrong post. I was just horrified by this idea.

My sister, as a senior at Pinkney, was a part of the worst basketball score I know of. It was an away game at Leslie-they won 112-0. She/they felt badly though the starters played less than half the game. It is a dilemma-what is the appropriate real-time response to this? IMO it is inappropriate to ask a team to withhold effort-especially reserves who otherwise may not get to play that much. They probably could have called the game at halftime or at least after three quarters.

I was a young teacher, and the official scorekeeper for the Leelanau School (Glen Arbor) vs. Freesoil boys basketball game back in 1989.  Freesoil played in a really old gym that was so small the court was roughly 3/4 sized, so it didn't take long to get up and down.  Both teams ran all game, and defense was optional.  Final Score was Leelanau 171, Freesoil 94.  Still holds multiple state records.  Leelanau's leading scorer was Anton Phillips with 84.  (Cool story, Bro.)

Your team could have gone man-to-man to at least give them a shot to score.  The other team probably had no choice but shoot 3s and they probably couldn't even get them to the hoop.  Not saying you should let them score, but I wonder why you play a zone exclusively.  Zones don't really teach good defense.  Yes, at the 7th grade level, zones are very effective, but man-to-man concepts need to be taught also.

Women's basketball is not a great product. The vast majority of women are not athletic enough nor possess the quickness and jumping ability to play basketball effectively.

I don't follow women's college basketball, but it sure seems like it's one of the most top heavy college sports, right? Seems like there are normally 3-4 teams who are just head and shoulders above even the rest of the top 25

Ole Miss's women's basketball team is not good. I attended their game in Starkville last week. Mississippi State got out to a 60-20 lead before calling off the dogs. The final was 80-39.

My son's school "modified" hockey team (7th, 8th, and 9th graders) was light on older kids one game.  They wound up skating all 7th graders (12 year olds) vs the other town's team that was all 9th graders (14 year olds).  The other town (Rye) is also a hockey powerhouse in southern westchester, NY.  So our prepubescent kids squared off against a bunch of near men with low voices and got waxed.

The score (9-0) didn't reflect just how dominated we were (shots on goal were 54-2).  At one point I think the other goalie was playing solitaire on his phone.
