To me this would indicate, there is likely more to his alleged NFL interest than simply trying to get leverage for a better contract at Michigan. Not good Bob.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:49 PM ^
The article is a big nothing. After reading it it's more so harbaugh being honest with recruits.
Edit: that's not to say he won't leave, but it doesn't really add anything we didn't know. He's listening to offers
January 6th, 2022 at 9:57 PM ^
If he is listening that is a really big deal.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:48 AM ^
Being honest is admirable but if he’s using this as leverage it sure as hell isn’t good for recruiting. If he does split, how many of his 2022 recruits do the same. This is pretty shitty IMO. Went from “id do it for free” to, yeah I’d go to the nfl and try and revive a shit franchise. Does no one have any loyalty anymore? As far as being pissed about his pay cut, he kind of earned that it, just as much as he earned a huge payday this year.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:29 PM ^
he's not leaving. stop spreading manure
January 6th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
You are in no position to deny this.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:35 PM ^
sal, if it was somehow practical i'd bet you a very good dinner somewhere that he's our coach next year. he ain't leaving. he's home in AA. he's been to the pros, doesn't have some mystical 'i wonder what its like in the NFL' and he took the 9'ers to 3 NFC championship games and a super bowl. he doesn't need the money. his love for michigan makes guys like you and i look like haters. he has young kids and he doesn't want to move.
he is not going anywhere.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
I don’t know your age, likely young, but your comment reeks of naïveté. Maybe you just haven’t had many life experiences. Not your fault. No offense.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:35 PM ^
bob, see post below to sal. as i tell my children, 'i'm older that some minerals'.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:22 PM ^
You don't know XM? Oh man you missed a whole month of posts about him. Talking about freeing him, which was always dumb precisely because of what he apparently did... just make a new account.
January 7th, 2022 at 12:49 AM ^
Spoken like someone who has just had enough taste of life to think they know something. Just turned 30?
January 7th, 2022 at 6:25 AM ^
This take made me laugh out loud.
January 7th, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
He may raise chickens but he’s not a spring chicken.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
You don’t know the man or what he is thinking. You have no basis for your confidence.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:33 PM ^
too funny. i actually do know jim from our days in AA. i was a couple of years in front of him but we were friends and had common friends. i hadn't seen him for years until a recruiting camp he and i were attending in the summer of '19. i was there with our two oldest sons, both now college football players. i walked up and said hello and we had a very nice talk, including his enthusiastic, 'where you at?!' we caught up and it was fun to see him. i'm not his bestie, far, far from it, but i know him.
and i'll say this: it is not beyond possibility that he might leave, certainly. but he has a number of the same considerations that i do and i'm telling you it would take a lot, and i mean a lot ('allot') to make me move. basically, only a huge conglomeration of my children, their spouses, and grandchildren, none of the two later parts now existing. i acknowledge the possibility of his departure. i'm just saying, it is highly, highly unlikely.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:07 PM ^
This is actually one of my favorite responses on MGoblog.
XM is accused of being very young and naïve and comes back with the fact that he is absolutely not that.
Then when it pivots to, “well you don’t know Jim Harbaugh so”, XM hits him with a “well actually”.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:17 PM ^
+1 for "allot" of reasons.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:28 PM ^
Wait, “I was a couple years in front of him but we were friends and had common friends” sounds like you were acquaintances. Then you randomly see him in 2019 and he says hello. Now in 2021, you have insight regarding his current state of mind? Sounds legit!
January 7th, 2022 at 10:12 AM ^
Jim and I graduated the same year and our paths crossed a few times. He was in a couple of my classes and lived down the street from me with a couple of other players. Then years later, I found out that he dated a high school friend of mine's now-wife, who went to Michigan but I didn't know her at the time.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:51 PM ^
On top of that, his kids go to Jim's old school and his parents live next door so they can see their grandkids every day. Jim Harbaugh is going to do that to his parents and his kids because... reasons?
That's crazy talk.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:13 PM ^
I’m sure whatever NFL team that he potentially could go to, would have no problem finding a house for him and his parents that are right next to each other. I want Coach Harbaugh to stay as much as anyone, but that would not be one of the major reasons he stays here.
January 7th, 2022 at 8:25 AM ^
While I, very much, agree with this I do believe there are some very large "howevers" that offer excellent alternatives to being the HC. I see Jim as being an elite "big picture" person. He has so been-there-done-that in the game of football that I do wonder, even believe, that he feels encumbered by the day-to-day busyness of being the HC. I am curious what you think-in this regard. Move Jim to a very nice corner office in the AD-as CEO of football operations. He would be a terrific mentor of coaches and could operate the scouting and recruiting aspects while, pretty much, working a 9-5 schedule. I believe something like this would be a huge win-win for everyone.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:34 PM ^
He has a link from Sam Webb. That's pretty damn reliable. It doesn't say that he's leaving, but don't be an ostrich with your head in the ground because you're not hearing what you want to hear.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:36 PM ^
i know sam is a great guy, huge michigan fan.
harbaugh is not leaving. see logic for that in my post to sal, above.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:45 PM ^
Awesome to reference the "allot" post from a few days back. Strong work XM
January 6th, 2022 at 9:29 PM ^
Harbaugh told that to the recruit before he committed on Dec 15th. It's not like this is some recent conversation that Harbaugh just had.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
But he did tell him. That is significant.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:48 PM ^
He also told him that Gattis won’t be his OC forever as he’s going to get a head coaching job in the future. Love Sam, but the article is a nothing burger with a baiting headline. Not saying he is or isn’t leaving, but this was before his team even played GA. He was just straight shooting saying “yeah I’ll listen”. Maybe his plan was to play leverage all along to get concessions or raises for staff. Who knows? But you should probably get off the cliff if the tweet is what put you there.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:30 PM ^
That's admirably honest if true. It also doesn't mean that he's leaving.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:06 PM ^
As with most conversations....context is very important.
I have no doubt that Harbaugh said this to Clemons, but the bigger point is. What was the context that triggered this response?
I highly doubt that Jim just came out and stated that he would "entertain" NFL offers. Just pure speculation, but I believe the Clemons family (it appears this conversation happen in December....after beating OSU....after crushing Iowa and winning the Big Ten title) were doing their due diligence just before signing day and asked Jim if he would be at Michigan for the next 4 years OR if the NFL can calling would he be interested.
I appreciate Jim's honest answer, yes he would entertain any serious NFL. It's what everyone should do regardless of what job they are at. It does not mean that he is leaving (I don't think he is leaving...) but only a fool (or liar) would make such a statement like "I'm not going anywhere....". No one knows what the next 4 years hold.
It will be an interesting next couple of weeks because the media loves to talk about Harbaugh. Couple that with the resume that he has would make any NFL Owner / GM come kick the tires....
I will say this, Harbaugh has a lot of leverage right now. The question is....who will give him all that he is asking for...... and I don't for one second believe it has anything to do with his salary....
January 6th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
“Coach, so you may leave before I get to campus and you want me to still commit to Michigan? Ok, I’m all in.”
Yeah, that makes sense.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:37 PM ^
Prepare the swim lanes. But not many.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:38 PM ^
I suddenly am getting worried
January 6th, 2022 at 9:38 PM ^
We can make this smell like roses but it is substantial (and at the same time quite commendable) if he told that to a recruit.
sort of feels like a 50/50 shot he’s gone and that doesn’t totally surprise me.
I really don’t want him to go but the train doesn’t have to go off the track if he does.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:55 PM ^
He probably gave any recruit who asked the same question the same answer every year he's been here. There's nothing here to indicate anything other than that JH is honest.
January 7th, 2022 at 1:35 AM ^
The train doesn’t have to go off the tracks, but coaching hires are a colossal gamble. Anyone that would replace him would be a crap shoot at best. The most sure-fire hires of the past 15 years that come to mind are Harbaugh to Michigan and Meyer to OSU. Saban, Kelly, Dabo, Smart were all gambles compared to those two IMO.
It would massively suck if Harbaugh left after finally slaying the dragon and winning the conference.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
Sounds like a good way to sell subscriptions to the Michigan Insider
January 6th, 2022 at 9:46 PM ^
There definitely seems to be a lot more legitimate smoke this time around than every other year.
Hope he stays, but I’d be really curious what they’d do if he did leave. You’d have to promote someone like Gattis at this point wouldn’t you? Can’t imagine them bringing in a new coach and a whole new staff, but what do I know?
January 6th, 2022 at 9:47 PM ^
No one currently on staff is qualified. Michigan would have to do a search. I imagine they have already had a list.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:54 PM ^
What is "qualified?" I'd make Mike Hart HC.
January 6th, 2022 at 9:55 PM ^
A guy with HC experience.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:01 PM ^
Michigan did well in promoting 2 coordinators (Moeller, Carr). Michigan did not do well in hiring 2 current head coaches from the outside. (RR, Hoke). So maybe HC experience isn’t as important as you think.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:06 PM ^
Moeller coached at Illinois in the early 80’s so he had HC experience.
UM’s best coaches came from outside.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:23 PM ^
Yeah Moeller was 6-24 at Illinois. I don’t know if that head coaching experience helps your argument.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:27 PM ^
Yost, Crisler, and Bo all had head coaching experience.
I’d say that it does.
January 6th, 2022 at 10:34 PM ^
I mean yeah, like 100 years ago. I’m just saying there’s no magic answer. A guy with HC experience isn’t a sure thing for success here.
January 6th, 2022 at 11:13 PM ^
Sherrone Moore
January 6th, 2022 at 10:02 PM ^
I think we shouldn't make the running backs coach the head coach. That is very bad
January 6th, 2022 at 10:10 PM ^
"I'd make Mike Hart HC."
Seriously? Why? Because he "understands the rivalry" (despite going 0-4 in it)? I'd expect that level of reasoning, sorry.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
Good thing it’s not your call
